Impact Player for Providence Catholic:

Providence Catholic has a roster loaded full of talent and also names who already have varsity playing experience. Senior OT James Barry (6-foot-5, 280 pounds) is drawing increased recruiting attention this summer and is holding a handful of FBS/FCS scholarship offers. Barry will be asked to lead a Providence Catholic offensive line that will get tested week in and week out again in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Providence Catholic Celtics:

Providence Catholic and then first year head coach Tyler Plantz was able to get the Celtics fortunes turned around quickly and led Providence Catholic to the 2022 Class 4A state title game. Plantz, a Providence Catholic alum has been able to compile an impressive coaching staff along with getting his kids to buy into him and his program. The Providence Catholic 2022 season was no fluke.

The biggest question facing Providence Catholic in 2023? Can the Celtics reload at a few key positions (QB/LB) survive an always rugged regular season schedule and get back into the IHSA post-season and make another deep run this fall? Providence as mentioned has talent, the overall program's numbers continue to rise and this is hands down a sleeping giant on the verge of some really big things sooner rather than later. I'll predict that Providence Catholic will finish the 2023 regular season with an 8-1/7-2 record then will make another deep post-season run in 2023.

Impact Player for Vernon Hills:

Vernon Hills senior RB/DB Anthony Martorano (5-foot-8, 165 pounds) is a talented two way starter for the Cougars. Martorano is a very solid between the tackles ball carrier who runs hard, makes good reads and is also a factor coming out of the backfield catching the football.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Vernon Hills Cougars:

Vernon Hills and veteran head coach Bill Bellecomo finished the 2022 season with a 3-6 overall record. The Cougars lost it's first six games in 2022 but on the positive side won it's last three games to end the season on a positive. Bellecomo has posted a 49-44 record in his 10 seasons leading the Vernon Hills football program.

The biggest question facing Vernon Hills in 2023? Can the Cougars reload at a handful of key positions (QB/LB/DB) and get back to the IHSA state playoff field this fall. Vernon Hills welcomes back 9 returning starters (5 offense 4 defense) and while the early non conference is not easy at all (including MSL crossover games against Buffalo Grove and Hersey) the remaining schedule is manageable. I'll say the Cougars post a 5-4 record in 2023 and find it's way into the IHSA state playoff field this fall.

Sad News

You hate to see any school drop football or worse close.I have a soft spot for all of the schools who no longer have football due to various reasons.I am a HUGE fan of schools who were in the old Illini 8 & Sica Conferences.Anyways though it has been now 40 years since Joliet East closed the school is still there as a Job Corps. The rusting lights, some stands, scoreboard, goal posts & field still there.Well they are selling/have sold that property & they're going to tear all that down & make it industrial.I really hate it & I know it's sad & it's progress but still seeing the old field & stadium always brought a sad smile to my face just like seeing Pat Cronin Field gone & Kankakee Eastridge wasting away

Impact Player for Fenwick

Fenwick 2025 OL/DL Nathaniel Marshall (6-foot-5, 275 pounds) is already a 4 star ranked recruit for Fenwick in the Class of 2025 and no question has the makings of becoming one of the most sought after names in the Midwest and the Nation. Marshall will play on both sides of the football again this fall and will be asked to lead the Friars line play and become a tone setter.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Fenwick Friars:

Fenwick and head coach Matt Battaglia posted a 5-5 overall record in 2022 as the Friars made the Class 6A state playoff field and lost to Morgan Park in opening round action. The Friars had a history 2021 season in winning the IHSA Class 5A state title, the school's first in history.

The biggest question facing Fenwick in 2023? Can the Friars find it's way to 5 wins and get back into the IHSA state playoff field and make a deep run this fall? Ther Friars will be a very strong team this fall....yet the regular season slate is brutally tough including taking on 7 out of 9 teams that made IHSA state playoffs in 2022 and includes 3 teams that won state titles (ICCP/Nazareth Academy/Mount Carmel) and another state title runner up team in Providence Catholic. I can see this being a very good Friars team...and I can also see them fight it's way to say a 6-3/5-4 regular season record...then become a very dangerous post-season team as well.

Mt. Zion 2025 WR Brayden Trimble adds a Northwestern offer

I was able to see and evaluate Brayden Trimble on Friday in person at the IHSFCA 4A/5A/6A 7on7 as Mt Zion made it to the tournament finals. Trumble has pretty impressive speed and quickness, flashed good hands in traffic and drew a lot of attention from opposing defenses. Trible still needs to add a bit more good weight and strength over the next year plus. He’s checks in at 6-foot-0 175 pounds and will need to better fight off jams at the line of scrimmage along with defensive backs trying to knock him off his routes…..Trimble has offers now from Miami of Ohio and now Northwestern and touts a 3.9 gpa. I have a story tomorrow morning on his reaction to adding the Northwestern offer

Impact Player for Wilmington

Wilmington will welcome back several key starters, and more than a few are two way starters for the Wildcats as well. Senior RB/LB Brendan Moran (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) is a highly productive player on both sides of the football. Moran has good size and length and is also a highly instinctive linebacker who covers a ton of ground and who is also an impressive finisher.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Wilmington Wildcats:

Wilmington and Hall of Fame head coach Jeff Reents has been the program's guiding light for the past 29 seasons as the Wildcats head coach, posting an impressive 260-63 record including winning IHSA state titles in 2014 and 2021. Wilmington in 2022 posted a 8-1 regular season record losing only to rival Reed Custer and made the Class 2A state playoff field. The Wildcats defeated Chicago Christian in Class 2A opening round action then lost to Tri Valley in Round 2 to end the season with a 9-2 record.

The biggest question facing Wilmington in 2023? Can the Wildcats reload, build up some needed depth and get back to winning the Illinois Central 8 conference title then make a deep post-season run this fall? The Wildcats had a younger team in 2022 and welcome back 13 returning starters (7 offense 6 defense) and I loom for Wilmington to again challenge for a conference title then making a deep post-season run this fall. I'll say Wilmington ends up with a 9-0/8-1 regular season record in 2023.

Impact Player for Oswego East

It' seems that year in and year out....Oswego East has always had impressive speed and athletes but for whatever reasons the linemen type of bigger kids never seemed to wind up at Oswego East. Yet the 2023 Wolves will feature two D1 level offensive tackles in senior Tim Savchuk (Army) and senior Zac Clarke and both will no question be impact players in 2023. Look for both Savchuk and Clarke to play a huge leadership role along with leading the Wolves offensive line this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Oswego East Wolves:

Oswego East and head coach Tyson LeBlanc is entering his 12th season as the Wolves head coach and has posted a 61-45 overall record. The Wolves have made the IHSA state playoffs for the past 7 straight seasons under Tyson LeBlanc and in 2022 Oswego East posted a 5-5 overall record. Oswego made the 2022 Class 8A state playoff field, and lost to York in Round 1 action.

The biggest question facing Oswego East in 2023? Can the Wolves reload at a handful of key positions this summer and continue to be a playoff and conference contender? The Wolves welcome back a solid core of seniors and 11 returning starters (8 offense 5 defense) but will need to find answers at a few key spots (QB/WR/LB) this summer. The Wolves always seem to reload especially in the offensive skills and I can see this team getting better and better as the season progresses. I can see this Oswego East team winding up positing a 6-3 caliber season this fall. Also a big key for Oswego East will be getting off to a good early start having two non conference games that will be solid matchups,,,but they are also very winnable games for Oswego East in my opinion as well.

My Take: IHSFCA Class 6A/5A/4A 7on7 at Glenwood High School

So this was the second IHSFCA first year 7on7 I've covered this week but the entire set up was a bit different. Before I break things down from Friday in Chatham thanks to Glenwood HC David Hay who went out of his way to make me feel very welcomed. I honestly sorta forgot how nice the entire athletics complex is at Glenwood including a grass field that is simply immaculate even under the ongoing draught.....so again everyone was terrific at Glenwood and it's always very much appreciated.

Now...down to business. So this was again a first year event and did not project out the way anyone from the IHSFCA expected this to look.....and because of low number of teams participating (next week I'll break down my thoughts on why the lack of teams and what fixes could be put in place to make these events better for everyone involved) the field ended up combining teams from 6A/5A and 4A to fill out the field.

Schools in attendance:

6A

Glenwood- The home team I felt had a pretty solid showing here and while they didn't win the entire event...they got a lot of good work in....showed to have a good talent level and some good numbers and depth as well. When talking Glenwood you have to mention the impact of the Helm family on this roster. Senior OL Mark Helm is going to be a key starter in 2023 along with 2025 twins LB Johnny Helm (6-foot-4, 185 pounds) and TE David Helm. The Titans used a few different quarterbacks who I felt threw the ball well here and this will be a very solid playoff caliber team again this fall.

Quincy- The buzz on the Blue Devils started last season as Quincy and head coach Rick Little had a young starting lineup with some real talent last fall. 2023? Quincy sure looks to be in line for another big year if you can tell anything from 7on7. Quincy junior QB Bradlyn Little was as impressive throwing the football and running the Quincy offense live than on video. Little has a terrific arm with touch, seems very fluid and makes quick, good decisions quickly. Little also has an impressive group of receivers and backs to utilize and keep an eye on out junior RB Jeraius Rice and this is a talented and experience offense. The Quincy defense also has some talent to watch including senior ILB Ty Douglas and again this a big, physical and very athletic defense. I've been told that the OL/DL is also good sized and experienced....and no question Quincy has the ingredients to make another strong playoff push in 2023.

Springfield- The Senators also looked pretty solid and I went in knowing that senior QB (played mainly WR here FYI) Paul Hartman has been drawing more and more FBS/Power 5 recruiting attention and that Springfield always has some speed and talent on board. Hartman? A huge kid on the hoof who no doubt will play tight end in college was solid here and is always a big time target and threat in the Senators passing game. Springfield will also welcome back 16 returning starters for 2023 and played like a team was some swagger and confidence. Overall I can see the Senators being a state playoff team this fall and the overall talent level is good enough to compete well in 6a.

Mascoutah- The Purple Indians looked decent here....not spectacular not bad but decent. Last season Mascoutah and head coach Aaron Hilgendorf had a handful of key big time play makers.....and at least on Friday I didn't see that one on two go to guys just yet on offense. Lefty sophomore QB Baruk Jonsson is a name to keep an eye on this season and is a kid with good size and physical tools. The defense was also solid here and while the Indians will need to get some positions straight this summer....the overall numbers, talent and depth looks to be there again this season.

5A

Back of the Yards- Made the trip all the way from the City of Chicago and while the Bobcats play in the non IHSA playoff CPL Blue Southwest conference....I love how they made the long haul and really competed hard especially against Jacksonville in a game featuring two trams from completely different worlds. My feeling is that Back opf the Yards learned a lot on Friday and will get better from this experience.

Jacksonville- Jacksonville and veteran head coach Mark Grounds is about as good as they come when it comes to coaching up his kids and getting more from them than most people would expect. The Crimson are coming off a state playoff year in 2022 and graduated a very strong senior class this past spring. This will be a young team in 2023 and replacing some key positions will be the biggest question. I liked what I saw from the backs and receivers here but I'm not sure of this is another state playoff caliber team for 2023. Time will tell and never underestimate the ability of this staff to get more out of the talent pool.

Triad I was impressed at the Triad offense and how they seemed to find a way to dent some pretty good opposing defenses (SHG game in particular was a plus for Triad) and while the overall talent was good here.....I would say Triad was maybe at best middle of the pack in this field. Again didn't see anything bad or missing but besides some decent QB and WR play I also didn;t see q ton of kids really stand out here. A solid team played pretty solid here is the bottom line.

SHG Easily one of the most watched teams here and for good reason. John Allison was there....so was Ken Leonard...in the stands watching with his wife then Ken made his way down to the field and I fully enjoyed talking to Ken about bad White Six baseball (also FYI expect a book coming soon on Leonard). SHG on the field? Seemed to start slow but finished much better here and no question this is a very young team still trying to shake out the bugs and find some kids positions along with tweaking and adjusting. SHG still has a ton of talent but again very much unknown kids for now. I'm guessing if you are going to get SHG this might be the season and I would highly advise getting at them earlier rather than later. I didn't mention any names of kids to watch in this breakdown because to be honest....I still need to learn a lot more about this team this summer.

4A

Rochester- At this stage I would be shocked to not be impressed with Rochester in any 7on7 setting...and they definitely did not disappoint at all. The Rockets always seem top have quarterbacks in all shapes and sizes year in and year out and that seems to be the case again in 2023....yet the common theme between all of them is that they can all sling it effectively. It seems like senior Parker Gillespie will be the starter and he threw a consistent good ball....senior TE/DE Lance Ingold (NIU commit) is an absolute steal for the Huskies who I predict will continue to be recruited by more colleges this fall. Ingold has an impressive mix of size/length ball skills and good speed for his size. Everyone in a skills position can catch the football extremely well. Defensively? This is an experienced unit that overall played pretty well here as the Rockets won the overall championship. Again. Ho hum. Needless to say Rochester will be a ton this fall.

Carterville- I came away maybe being the most impressed at the overall athletic skills, size and talent and potential that Carterville showed here than pretty much any other team. The Lions (Or Fighting Illini/Bearcats depending upon which logo you believed see photos) and head coach Brett Diel have a big, strong squad and the overall size of the receiver corp was eye opening and impressive, Let's just say Carterville definitely knows where the weight room is located. The Lions played well here and overall this looks like a team that's way more than a one year wonder from 2022 in my opinion. I'll get more details on names etc soon. .

Civic Memorial Decent sixed group here from a numbers standpoint....Civic Memorial just sort of looked like a younger team to me here. They had a few key playmakers, but seems to really struggle at times with it's defense against some really strong teams here.

Mt. Zion- MTZ has been generating a lot of online buzz over the past year or so and it seems like every kid on the roster is a major D1 recruit (if you read the others). Well I'm not so sure about all of the kids being D1, but this is a pretty solid and talked team and roster who also showed well here on Friday. Sophomore TE/DE AJ Robinson (6-foot-7, 230 pounds) didn't play here (recovering from an earlier summer injury) but he might be one of the more impressive kids I've seen on the hoof in a while at that age. Junior WR Brayden Trimble is a twitchy athlete who is also a big target in the Braves offense while senior QB Makobi Adams three the football well here. I watched t. Zion struggle a bit against a bigger, more physical team in Glenwood and that was really my only concern with the Braves here....otherwise this is a team that should win a lot of games this fall.

Impact Player for St. Charles East

St. Charles East senior OL/DL Bodey McCaslin has been a mainstay on both sides of the football over the past few seasons for the Saints. McCaslin. who earlier this summer gave Iowa his verbal commitment will be asked again to provide leadership on and off the field along with being a highly productive two way starter this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Charles East Saints:

St. Charles East and second year head coach Nolan Possley will look to get the Saints on track this coming season after posting a 2-7 record in 2022. St Charles East had been a year in and year out playoff caliber team but have now posted two back to back 2-7 seasons after making the IHSA state playoffs in four straight seasons from 2016 to 2019.

The biggest question facing St. Charles East in 2023? Can the Saints find a way to bounce back and become a state playoff contender in 2023? The Saints have a good core of returning starters back this fall, but can they find enough talent in some key spots along with developing better overall numbers and depth this summer? Playing in the rugged Dukane conference is never an easy task....and if the Saints are able to find it's way back they absolutely will need to win it's early slate of games this season. Having to face the likes of rival St Charles North, Batavia, Geneva and Wheaton South to end the regular season is just brutal. I'll say the Saints end up with a 4-5/3-6 type of regular season in 2023.

My Take: IHSFCA Class 7A 7on7 at St Charles North

Always great to be back out at St. Charles North...and it's been a year or two since my last stop so it was good to get caught up on the North Stars along with getting to talk with the coaches from most of the schools.

Schools in attendance:

St. Charles North
Wheaton Warrenville South
Yorkville
Moline
Hersey
Elk Grove
Kankakee
Schaumburg

Again I get the feeling this wasn't exactly what the IHSFCA had in mind when they came up with this event.... but it's the first year so hopefully this will grow from here on out. The field of teams here was pretty solid overall and in all honesty I didn't see a bad team all day which is NOT always the case at any 7on7. Some teams are harder to judge at these things (Moline/Yorkville are both generally run first offenses) than others....but again the field was smaller than expected but still worth checking out. I was able to spend basically my my entire morning here and with a limited amount of teams I came away feeling I saw more than I needed to get a better idea on all 8 teams.

St. Charles North- The North Stars ended up winning this 7on7 and after a slower first game start along with a few games closer than they wanted....I felt North had the best overall talent here on both sides of the football and things started to kick in. North has the luxury of having two standout quarterbacks in the Plumb brothers (junior Ethan and sophomore Matt) who at times rotated each series and unless you knew these two would be hard pressed to tell one Plumb brother from the other. Ethan Plumb will be the starter in 2023 for the North Stars and his maturity for his young age, his overall physical tools (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and upside is unquestioned. I said two years ago that by the time he reached his senior year he would be a Power 5 quarterback and I see no reason to back off that prediction. The North Stars also have a nice core of offensive skills led by senior LB/TE Jake Furtney and while the North Stars might not have a big time burner/freak...they have a deep core of just very solid receivers and backs. The defense was solid for the most part and made some big stops when it counted. Nothing ever comes easy in the Dukane and I'm no where close to picking a conference champion just yet.....but know that the North Stars from a skills standpoint are going to be a very good team in 2023.

Wheaton Warrenville South- The Tigers and head coach Sean Norris is just someone I openly root for, and having to be the next guy taking over a historic program from THE guy is no easy task. WWS looked pretty solid here.....not spectacular but not poor or down really....a good sigh after last year's 3-6 regular season record. The Tigers have talent and senior Matt Crider is just a terrific all around athlete and also back is multi-year starting QB Luka Carbonaro which is a plus....the defense has some nice athletes and the overall numbers, talent level and just the overall vibe is always pretty upbeat and positive.....which is a very good thing. I can see this team getting back to say 5-4/4-5 and as mentioned above...nothing comes easy in the Dukane.

Yorkville- I didn't get to actually talk with Dan McGuire (my fault) but I was impressed with the Foxes and Yorkville's program has really surged over the past handful of years under McGuire. The Foxes always have linemen and backs and will again look to run the football first....yet the Foxes used two pretty solid quarterbacks who I thought made some really good throws. The remaining skills are solid with good overall numbers and depth has really never been as high. The defense has play makers in Ben Alvarez along with junior S Luke Zook and junior WR Dyllan Malone and both junors will be on multiple recruiting lists sooner rather than later. If the Foxes can again run the football effectively....the play action passing game should be more than fine and the defense also will be strong again.

Moline- The Maroons are basically a ground and pound run first offense....and what impressed me here is that the Maroons ran it's base offense, worked on it's overall play action passing game then also got some really good reps for the defense. Moline has impressive numbers and a pretty high talent level in 2023. Moline also graduated some key kids from 2022 but I liked kids like WR/DB Chase Stephens along with senior WR Zander Ealy here along with a defense that athletically hung with the best teams here.

Hersey- The Huskies are going to win a lot of games and score a lot of points in 2023. Start with junior QB Colton Gumino who was throwing the football as well as I've seen from him here. Gumino has gotten bigger, stronger and thicker from the last time I saw him. Gumino makes good reads and decisions, has a quick, smooth and accurate release and just seems to know where to go with the football more times than not. The Huskies were missing a few kids (again welcome to summer 7on7 where NO ONE has a full roster) but the overall numbers and depth/talent on the skills side is was evident. The defense? Yeah wasn't a great day and at times the defense looked a bit lost....yet again this is 7on7...I know that the Huskies when full staffed will be ready to roll and will also see better days this fall. Lots to like here for sure.

Elk Grove- Well for the second straight summer I've seen the Grens and for the second straight time.....they impressed me. Elk Grove was not one of the top teams here....but they more than competed in every game here. The new staff seems to have gotten these kids to remain on board and overall I can see this team winning games in 2023 and challenging for maybe a second straight state playoff bid? I still need to learn mroe about the Grens this summer but I'm not backing down from what I saw here......this is a good team again in 2023.

Kankakee- The Kays have a new head coach in Miles Osei who ironically coached last season at Elk Grove. The Kays still have a ton of speed and skills...and 4 star ranked OT Marques Easley was just hanging around with his team to remind us all that the Kays also have some linemen as well in 2023. QB Larenz Walters was really solid here and will be a big key for the Kays this fall. Also the Kays offensive backfield is stacked again with speed and athletes. Defensively the Kays also can stack up and cover pretty much everyone here and OLB Kenarius Chandler is a name to watch along with another 2-3 names who will develop into potential FBS level recruits. Expect another big season from Kankakee.

Schaumburg- The Saxons have struggled for some time now and I'm hoping what I saw today is a good sign of things to come. Keep an eye on sophomore WR Cam Anderson who has impressive size and reach and at least from the offensive skills standpoint the Saxons look capable of putting up some offense in 2023. Overall the Saxons also battled all comers here.

Impact Player for DeLaSalle:

DeLaSalle senior WR/DB David Coffey is already holding several FCS scholarship offers and he continues to draw more recruiting interest this summer. Coffey has impressive speed, is a very fluid athlete who also has some twitch and explosiveness. Coffey on video shows his overall versatility (WR/Slot/DB/KR/PR) and his game is no question higher level.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 DeLaSalle Meteors:

DeLaSalle and second year head coach Marty Quinn played a ton of underclassmen names in his first season in 2022 as the Meteors posted a 1-8 record last season. DeLaSalle played 7 playoff teams in it's nine game regular season schedule in 2022 and will hopefully benefit this fall from returning several key names from a season ago. The Meteors last made the IHSA state playoff field in 2017 and has been in the postseason just twice (2017/2013) since the 2009 season.

The biggest question facing DeLaSalle in 2023? Can the Meteors raise it'soverall game, get marked improvement s from a experienced team in 2023 and maybe get into the IHSA postseason this fall? The key I feel this fall for the Meteors is getting off to a quick start and have what I feel are three opening games where DeLaSalle has a fighting chance again this season. I'll say DeLaSalle finds a way and gets to the 5-4/4-5 level in 2023.

My Take: Naperville North 7on7 Tuesday June 20th

Spent Tuesday night watching a nice collection of teams out at Naperville North. Naperville North has hosted teams on Tuesday nights over the past few years and this has grown in to a pretty solid field to watch. Thanks as always to Sean Drendel and everyone at Naperville North for the always terrific hospitality. North will host one more Tuesday night next week and then a bigger 7on7 a week from Friday.

Like with all team summer 7on7 camps...odds are you aren't seeing a full roster as several kids also playing travel baseball AAU hoops etc. so that's always part of the equasion. Also this is 7on7 and observations are just that...observations only and in more cases than not you can only take so much from these events which will translate into on the field in 2023. I try to watch a series or two for each team....sometime more sometimes less....just depends on the field layouts etc. I can and will miss seeing kids at these events.

Teams in attendance:

Naperville North- The home team was one of the teams I wanted to watch pretty closely, mainly to see junior QB Jacob Bell who has been one of the more intriguing names in the 2025 class. Bell is finally getting his shot to run the Huskies offense, taking over for graduated QB Aidan Gray (Northwestern) along with a good core of receivers led by Purdue bound WR/DB Luke Williams. Overall impressions? Bell was a little off early then seemed to settle in nicely and Bell's arm strength, touch and his size/strength no question reminds me a little bit of a high school version of Justin Fields. Bell will be dangerous running the football in 2023 along with having a big arm as well. Luke Williams is no question a leader for the Huskies, will again play WR and S for the Huskies and he's just gotten bigger, stronger and just seems taller this summer. Williams will be no question a top priority to stop for the Huskies in 2023. The remaining skills are solid, the defense was also solid here as well. Overall I thought this was a good early showing for the home team.

Lincoln Way West- The Warriors were missing some kids most noticeable was QB Cole Crafton who I'm sure is traveling the country for baseball (Crafton is a top notch outfielder prospect) yet West I felt looked pretty solid here. Senior WR Austin Rowswell is going to be a big time player and recruit in my opinion. Rowswell has really impressive speed and hands, showed really good hands and he has a chance of a big 2023 breakout season. The overall talent level and depth looks pretty solid here as well. This team looks like a potential playoff tam to me.

Lincoln Way East- It's East so you know going in that the Griffins will just run it's base offense, work on it's pass defense and just get it's work in then go home. The Griffins are never really flashy, and this group doesn't really have a ton of athletic freaks just like many other East teams of the recent past. All East does is execute, plays hard, makes plays, doesn't make mistakes and just seems to find a way. Senior QB Braden Tischer already looks to be in mid-season form and the remaining offensive skills are just really solid and deep while this team always has very good team speed. The East defense also always has 5-foot-10, 180 pounds linebackers who will just drill you and a secondary with good speed and athleticism. New year same ole East.

Downers Grove South- The Mustangs are no question younger in 2023 and graduated several multi-year starters this past spring. Didn't atch a ton here but I'll see DGS later this summer especially when they host it's own 7on7 (always one of the better events of the summer)

Downers Grove North- l didn't watch enough of the Trojans here to be honest.....but the offense seemed pretty solid and I already knew going in that the defense would be a strength. That definitely looked to be the case here on Tuesday night and defensively in particular played out this way. I will definitely watch the Trojans closer here next week. North offensively is a much more run first team once the season begins so these events are good from the defensive side of the football more than anything.

Neuqua Valley- Confidence seems to be pretty high from the NV people on this team and from what I saw this looked to be the case. I always enjoy getting caught up with Bill Ellinghaus and the Wildcats have some impressive play makers on both sides of the football. A few key names were missing here but I'll get a chance to see NV a few more times this summer and will get a bit more details on specific kids to watch etc.

Lockport- Lockport has a new assistant coach this season on the offensive side of the football who looks really, really familiar. Former Lemont HC Bret Kooi is on the offensive side of the football, back at the school where he won back to back state titles before leaving to take over Lemont. Yep....it was strange yet also pretty cool to see Bret Kooi back at Lockport. The Porters are another school that's going to run the football 70 percent plus times a game so the Porters won't wow you offensively. The Porters have good depth and numbers again and the starting offense was pretty solid overall.

St Charles East- This was the first time in years I've seen East at a 7on7. The Saints have a solid yet not spectacular squad here and the overall offensive skills level seems to be a bit green this summer. The defense played well in the handful of reps I saw here.

Lemont- The Lemont program has been one of the winningest programs in the South suburbs and the Lemont Football Team (and yes no sign of a new nickname coming anytime soon) looked really good this summer. One of the biggest storylines will be the arrival of QB Nathan Kunickis. Kunickis, who played receiver and safety in 2022 behind then senior QB Payton Soloman will get his shot at leading the Lemont offense this fall. Kunickis has high level college physical tools (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) and was just throwing a very impressive football here. I'm not sure what position Kunickis will eventually play in college....but I can see him going say the PWO route at the Power 5/higher D1 levels and developing into a big time player. The remaining Lemont kids are talented, good sixed and they all seem to know where the weight room is located. I just saw a lot to like here from Lemont this summer.

Glenbard West- The Hilltoppers also are a run first team so 7on7 is more of getting work in and then getting the pass defense coverage in line and ready for the season. The West offense was pretty solid here....I saw a few different quarterbacks who threw the football pretty well.,. senior WR Julius Ellens is one of the best game breakers at this event who just catches everything in his vicinity....and the defense has speed and is very athletic. Again just a lot to like here early.
