JCA folks sandbagging…never.
It's really not hyperbole to say they must beat Fenwick to have any reasonably simple avenue to 5 wins. With Marist, Naz, and MC upcoming, that is 3 games as 7 plus point dogs with a loss already in hand. If you beat Fenwick, there is still a path to 5 as long as you can beat ND and PC (who both look pretty good overall so far). Lose to Fenwick and the tough sledding just gets tougher.

Let's focus on three things:
1. Confidence boosting plays/establishing the run game - you brought in one of the top pass catching RBs in the league and grossly underutilized his talents. Instead, we are doing things like taking shots on 3rd and 2. Caleb seemed "hyped up" and was sailing throws. Calm him down with shorter throws

2. Utilizing your TE - this both boosts confidence as mentioned previously as well as helps your OL. I'm interested to see how often we had Kmet lined up tight today

3. More roll outs - the Bears have had 3 straight 1st round QBs that move well out of the pocket combined with below average OL. Yet, we love to have them drop back and "wait" for plays to develop. Get him rolling out to help the line until the defense adapts.
The Bears had 29 passes and 22 runs so they were fairly balanced. They only had 84 yards rushing and 45 of those yards came on their 3 longest runs. I'd say the Titans defense wasn't going to let them establish the run. Shorter throws? Williams average per attempt was 3.2 yards, so he wasn't exactly slinging it.

I feel that just because a QB is athletic you should constantly be moving him is misguided. While the rollout has it's place and can be effective it also cuts the field in half and lets the defense know you're committing to throw to that side of the field. Williams was not accurate today from the pocket so what makes you think he would have been more accurate on the move?

I'm sure Waldron had one game plan in mind, but like Mike Tyson said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." You take what the defense gives you.

Was he "waiting" for plays to develop in the pocket or is he still learning how to read an NFL defense and wasn't getting the ball out quick enough? The OL needs to get better for sure, but at the same time the average time from snap to throw in the NFL is 2.5 seconds so I'm not sure why people are expecting Williams to be able to stand back there all day.

I think most of the JC faithful here knew what we were getting when Oswego was scheduled. They are what I thought they would be. Perhaps a little better. JC responded not as well as I would have liked. But the win was not a surprise to most. When I saw the Oswego game on the schedule, I thought it was overscheduling. If we didn't already have Marist, Naz, MC, PC, Fenwick, etc. then I would love Oswego to bolster the schedule.

As it was, I said the Oswego game would be a good gauge and fans of other programs seemed to call that classic JC sandbagging.

So it seems like any perception of not knowing was not coming from the JC camp.

That said, I will say that I knew the talent they had returning. However, their "merely" above average results last year makes me understand why some were still in the "prove it" mode before they believed in what Oswego was cooking. I think they should run the table in their league. Then we will see what November brings.
Yes, since the Covid year, Oswego hasn’t been typical Oswego, but most of those people in the know should have been aware that many of this year’s Sr class have been playing Varsity since their sophomore year.

Im more surprised that none of the football experts knew what type of talent Oswego had this season.

By featuring a one back, run first-at-all-costs offense, it’s a challenge to attract athletic kids who could develop into star power
I mean, an offense that features up to 3 backs and highlights their abilities is bound to attract running back talent. Kids like Jordan Anderson and both Iannantones and Grigsby and Keenan Hailey like to get the ball 20 plus times a game. Might this come at the expense of some 6'2" 170 pound WR speedsters? Sure. But it's hard to create an offense that is going to be attractive to both running backs and QBs/WRs.

I think it is fair to say that when they are able to attract a QB who can sling it with a few capable receivers, they sling it and it can look good (2021 was a nice balance of power running and Voss spreading it around). But that's with a mobile and sound decision making QB. This year's QB is still young and last year's QB had a skill set very different from Voss.

Sure, they can try to alter the offense to attract more QB talent. But to do so last year would have been a criminal misuse of the talent on the roster. Quite simply, if that team was passing 15 times a game on average, it would not have gone well.

This year it looks similar with a young QB and WR/TE being the only real offensive position where they don't have experienced returners. We will see what happens.

They will have to open it up some out of necessity as the schedule sees teams that are as good and better than Oswego's front. It remains to be seen if that will go well, but they will have to try.

But it's real easy to say "just open it up to attract more incoming QB/WR talent. These things are all cyclical and I am glad to see this staff has spent the last 7 years playing to the strengths of what they have in the building and not simply running a system because it's their system or running a system incongruent with their current talent just to attract some possible future talent.

What exactly were you looking for in a rookie QBs first NFL game?

What mysterious play or formation would you have liked him to call that would’ve made the o line block, well anyone, or make receivers catch?

When your o line can’t block anyone it does make the o coordinator look bad I guess

Kevin, you played in the program.
Get a goddam grip on yourself and trust that the coaches know what is best.
Make Tony Janc proud.
Get a grip? That made me laugh. :p

It's not the same game as it was in the 70's and 80's. It's rarely enough now to be a one dimensional running team even with almost perfect execution, but still possible when you have all the right tools.

Most of the time in todays game you have to have at least a good enough passing game to keep defenses honest. In 5A and above. Smaller schools can still get away with running all the time, provided they have near perfect execution.

Just my opinion.

I didn’t agree with a couple play calls but hey it’s a first game for everyone. I didn’t like them trying to throw the ball early in the game when they only needed 1 yard for a first down but hey it was only a couple of plays that we could second guess.

I realize your reply was not directed at me necessarily, but it could have been because I'm being hard on Jaws right now.

Although it may not sound like it right now, I'm a big Coach Jaws fan, but I have to admit that over their last 16 games I have been saying "Jaws WTF are you doing?" a lot, especially the last 3 games.

It's almost like, his success is making him scared of doing something wrong and has greatly and adversely effected his game planning and play calling. Either that , or he has absolutely no faith in his teams ability to complete a forward pass.

The Head Coach is starting his 7th year.
One of his previous six years was the COVID year.
In five years of normal structure he has led his squad to three State Championship games and won two.
When he took the job the previous squad went 1-8.
He and his staff have proven that they know how to develop football players and win.

I'm not hating, I'm just stating facts. Please tell me what signs you saw in today's game that made you think he is who you think he can be?
He moves well in the pocket while still looking down field. He had some quick passes, he had a few passes dropped but it’s part of the game. He looks composed for a rookie first game. Yes he wasn’t as accurate as he could be but he has the ability and confidence. He shows flashes but I know he needs to improve. I believe he will and later in the season we will have a different conversation. 4A he is a rookie so let’s see how he does in up coming games. I will take the win and glad our defense stepped up.
