What HS team do you root for

I was at that Marist / Naperville Central game and don't remember a controversial call. Without derailing this thread (too much) please refresh my memory.

I was just there as a fan of high school football and had no horse in the race. So no bias. Just don't remember controversy.
Marist scored late in 4th. Ensuing kick Naperville did not field kick properly and it bounced past the return man where Marist recovered right around the 1 or 2 but rolled into the end zone where it was called a touchback. Otherwise Marist would have been inside the 2 going in for potential lead. NC came down and scored game winner on this drive. Great game none the less.

Bgyfl programs do it right. I don’t know much about tcyfl but it looks like that’s also a solid league. It makes no sense for kids from Kankakee to play for Joliet and kids from Elgin to play for a team out of country club hills. You would think people would realize that these national championships are just a money grab. Not to mention I don’t see how it helps develop players when you are on a team that has kids from all over the Chicagoland area and you’re destroying local teams.

I honestly don't root for anyone. I just love high school football.

I haven't set foot on the campus where I graduated in the 39 years since I graduated. The school my kids went to was known for having talent but a poor coaching staff, so they always exited early and community support has wavered.

I generally respect the storied programs and love when the "blue bloods" battle each other. I love teams with discipline and a clean sideline. I love the double wing.

I don't know if I would say couldn't care less about losing. 2013 losing to Naperville Central in the semis on controversial call still hurts especially when Naperville Central went on to win it all. Losing in the semis to rival BR at home in 2018 still stings as well.

ICE Week 5

Looking like 4 clear playoff teams and 4 teams that are not close to being a playoff team.

Wilmington @ Reed-Custer - the Wildcats are firing on all cylinders and pretty much dominating opponents in all 3 phases. Reed-Custer lost a heartbreaker in a game where a win would help create some much needed momentum. Wilmington rolls on to another victory, again, and becomes playoff eligible, again. Wilmington 48 RC 13

Streator @ Herscher - the Tigers put together a very close victory and have a very outside shot at getting in the playoffs but they are still alive. Streator is struggling which I think everybody expected but they have shown improvement from game to game from what I have heard. This always seems to be a weird game but the Tigers prevail and stay alive for another week. Herscher 23 Streator 19

Manteno @ Lisle - Manteno has been on a roll but haven't really played a quality opponent, well maybe Sandwich, and they won't get tested this week. The Lions struggles continue. Manteno 56 Lisle 14

Coal City @ Peotone - the Coalers are in position for another playoff season and will have their toughest challenge since week 1. Probably won't put up 74 in this one. Peotone got throttled by Wilmington and this week we will find out if Peotone is a contender or pretender. Peotone 27 Coal City 20

For the ICE experts, I have a question...over the summer I went to a summer basketball tournament in Braidwood and I was blow away by the facilities On another thread there was a discussion about the importance of facilities and success, with all of the facilities that Reed-Custer has, how are they not more competitive in football?

For all the years I’ve been on this site, finding the Marist fan is like spotting a unicorn 😀. Very bizarre fan base. They are very successful in Football and numerous other sports. They pack the stands, they’re loud and passionate and if they lose they couldn’t care less, they are thankful for a good time. I’m envious I admit it!

De La Salle forfeits Friday's game (9/27) to Fenwick

Where did you pull that number from?
According to NFHS participation statistics, 36,810 students participated in 11-man football in Illinois last year. In 2001-02, when we went from 6 to 8 classes, that participation number stood at 46,759.

Glenbard West question

I find this interesting. What youth teams are having great success right now?
I’m most familiar with bgyfl. Park ridge falcons are bgyfl but they aren’t dominant. From what I understand the other Park Ridge team that was also named the Falcons but now is something else, is likely taking a lot of the top bgyfl park ridge program’s talent. Weird story there.

I would say the top bgyfl programs: Palatine, Downers, Wheaton. Tri-city usually has a TON of kids at each level but not the most dominant. Elmhurst Eagles are down. I think they lose kids to Bears each year. Bears has a decent amount of Elmhurst kids. It’s a feeder team for IC. Arlington Cowboys is not good, they’ve gotten decimated by the Arlington Dawgs, feeder for Hersey in Pop Warner. Glen Ellyn has some talent but you don’t see them at the highest level very often. They tend to be in d2(between lowest and highest levels of bgyfl).

Your old school bgyfl programs like Bartlett, Carol Stream, Lombard Falcons and Bloomingdale tend to dominate the D2 level. The talent isn’t great. Rarely do they get bumped up to the gold d1 (highest) level. When I was a kid Bloomingdale was unreal. Now? Not so much. Still some talented kids but not enough to dominate.

Sad to see the Hanover Park Hurricanes, a once dominant bgyfl program is no longer in bgyfl. Man when I was a kid they were an awesome program. As others have said demographic changes have shifted that area.

Another once proud program was Bensenville Bandits. They used to be great in the 80s and 90s. Went to KC a few times in pop warner. Bensenville was a blue collar town. Now it has also shifted with less kids coming out and when a kid is really good they end up at IC. Bandits are gone and been replaced by Bensenville Raiders. They were asked to leave by bgyfl after not winning more than a game or two in the entire organization.

Now that I think about it, all of those programs that are down tend to follow the trend where their high schools are these days.

Carol Stream down- GBN down
Bloomingdale down- lake park down
Hanover park gone- lake park down
Bartlett down- Bartlett HS down

Palatine, Wheaton and Downers all very good if you look at the standings of the top teams in each division. Biggest issue is that they all feed into different high schools so the talent doesn’t always get to the same high schools.

Glenbard West question

What is going on is people are trying to form super teams so they can go to nationals. Elmhurst has 2 teams at 13u. One team is a hand picked team with kids from all over. The coach from proviso brought his best players there and cut the weaker kids lose. This is happening all over. Programs aren’t worried about increases their numbers. It’s very common for teams to limit their roster to their hand picked 16 kids

ICE Week 5

Easy Picks. Wilmo and Manteno can name the score.
Tougher. CC over Peotone by 2-3 scores. May be close early, but CC has more depth. If you look at both teams' lone loss, one team fought for 4 quarters. The other didn't.
Who Knows. Streator over Herscher. This should be the GOTW. One team will either win like 35-32 in a wild game or a 7-6 snoozefest. Your guess is as good as mine. I'll take the bulldogs.

MMXXIV Edition - CCL-ESCC Predictions Week V

BR -35....Rice gets the needed win. Awfully good team to be sitting at 1-3.
MC -43....and so ends Benet's run.
Viator +29....Iggy gets the win, but too many points.
LA -14....a credit to DePaul that the spread is this low.
ND +42....ND's defense will allow the cover. Rita has emerged as a legit threat in 7A.
Marist -19....I'm calling this one the Irony Bowl. Marist had one "down" year last year. However, I'll never understand how a perennial 8A power is in the Orange, while a school in the 300's is in the Green.
JCA +9...the Hilltopper defense has played well other than the 1st quarter against Oswego. They will get their biggest test against the Roadrunners. This is an old school JCA offense with two power RB's. and a big Oline that seems to have found its stride. QB Simulick had his best game last week. He will need to play well to keep JCA in this one. Naz wins. Just too many weapons.
Provi +21....Provi's defense will keep it closer than 21. This will be the first of three straight road losses for the Celtics. They have Marist and LA on the road the next two weeks. Good luck.
Montini -24....the Broncos have two quality losses on the road. If they can find a way to get into the playoffs, they may knock off Byron in 3A this year.
Leo +47.....too many points.
Carmel +25....the Corsairs have yet to find their offensive stride. This may be the week.

Glenbard West question

They are one of them. It’s gotten really bad in Pop Warner, AYF and UYF. The Elmhurst Bears 13u team is mostly kids from proviso. I don’t know if they even have a kid from Elmhurst
To add a some thought to the declining numbers, do you think part of it is the coaching that is encountered both on the teams they play for and the opponents they are playing? There are some towns that I will simply refuse to work for, because their entire organization is poorly run.

if the issue is not enough youth football players total, then what is being described as youth teams with players from communities that feed into 3 or 4 different high schools is obviously what is going to have to happen. Program A program B and program C can’t get enough local players to be able to field teams in many of the age groups. So either kids play for other programs or they don’t play at all. If you agree that youth fb numbers are down in many communities then either programs accept kids from other towns or the programs with too few kids fold and kids have play Madden 2024. What do you do with kids who sign up for their high school youth program and are told there are not enough signups to field a team? Tell them to find a bigger program or quit the sport?
