This is why the top 12 should play for the only State Championship, crown the top dog. Everything else should be class "x"A championship.
But is any school demanding that? If there were an open 12 team class that teams could opt into would more than 2 or 3 even do it? Most teams seem happy to compete in their assigned class and so I'd venture most don't wanna be teams 6-12 in a open class and have a likely early exit verse the chance of extending their season into late November in a diluted class system.
Unfortunately you are most likely right. It would be very telling wouldn't it for any program opting out.
But man, the opportunity to be the 6-12 "Cinderella" to be crowned Top in State, that's where legends are made. But I digress and this is the IHSA we are talking about.
I wonder if you couldn't do the reverse of what the Prep Bowl does... Receive an invite to this open class. If you're a quick exit you can get inserted into say the quarters or round 2 of the state tourney with a chance to play on in your season in a 6-8A consolidation bracket. It eases some of the "first mover" problem in convincing teams that even competing in a open class state title is the ultimate goal to strive for.
Anyways, an idea not even worth the keyboard its typed on. Doubt we'll ever see a major shakeup to introduce an open class.
Along with other underclassmen that seen considerable playing time, They will be a load next year
Yea they had a bunch of sophomores playing a lot of snaps in the playoffs and championship game.
