What schools would you put above them?

I’d have NND and Warren for sure above them, and may also put some or all of Homewood Flossmore, BB, Hinsdale C, and Nequa Valley who only lost a close game to ESTL. Maybe end of reg season and some of those teams lose, I consider Loyola at 2, just not now with all these 0 and 1 win teams putting impressive seasons together.

Has anyone every witnessed as dominating performance as South Elgin regardless of the conference they play in. They have scored 378 points and only given up 7 all year with 7 shutouts. Beat a 4-1 Glenbard East team then a 5-1 Glenbard South team. Is it going to take a win over Bartlett who also plays in the same conference and lost to Glenbard East or a win in the playoffs to get some love.

So they’ve given up 7 points all year but have 7 shutouts in 7 games? That’s nuts.

From 1969-71 Pittsfield High School had 15 straight shutouts....so take that!

If they beat one of the team ranked top 10 they will get some love. Be patient. If SEHS is as good as your support is, it will show.

In 2015 Arcola had a similar run in Class 1A. They also played in a very weak conference and consequently neither the polls nor the computer rating systems gave them much chance to advance far in the playoffs. Arcola's closest regular season game was 42 points and and they won their nine regular season games by an average of 55.7 points. By comparison, South Elgin's closest game so far this year was a 28-point win over Glenbard East and they have won their seven games by an average of 53 points.

When the playoffs came Arcola won its first two games handily. However, they were tested mightily in the quarterfinals and barely survived with a one-point win. If I am remembering correctly they beat Gibson City 14-13. Once again in the semifinal game and the championship game the computers gave them little chance of winning, but they won both games comfortably and won the 2015 1A state championship.

The fact is when a team plays in a very weak conference, and in the case of South Elgin in a closed conference (meaning no non-conference games), there really isn't a good opportunity to evaluate just how good they are. Thankfully the playoffs exist and will shed some light on the matter. I provided the Arcola example above to demonstrate that historically speaking it is possible for a team with South Elgin's background to have success in the playoffs. Hopefully they will get a reasonable bracket assignment (e.g. not have to play Loyola in the second round) and will have a chance to prove just how good they are. This type of situation is one of the many things that make high school football interesting and exciting.

Vernon Hills with DaVaris Daniels and Evan Spencer in 2010 had a pretty great run.

Is this years sterling team better than last years team? Saw them play last year and they were very good as well. Wonder how they compare

That’s tough to answer, they’re different this year but getting similar results. Much better line play, maybe a little less athleticism on the outside/skill. I’m a homer but will readily say not number 2 in the state good. They belong somewhere in the top 10 though.

The conference switch makes it harder to gauge as well. Much more competition overall than the NIB12 west was, I think that shows on the defensive side. The 49-0 wins over an Ottawa type team have been replaced with 53-26 wins over Moline. There’s a few explosive kids we’ve played against that have been able to break some long td’s but not many teams have been able to sustain drives and punch one in at the end. At the same time, the top end teams we got in the crossovers with the East like sycamore/kaneland/etc is not there.

At this point, finish the season strong and healthy then see how the draw shakes out.

IIRC, they got beat by Phillips last year, and now probably have to go through ESTL? Tough.

Quarters in ‘16 were beat by Sycamore
Semis ‘17 beat by Phillips
Semis ‘18 beat by Montini

Hadn’t ever been to the semis before so a nice run the last few years.

Edgy or anyone,

Can you explain how SF is 4A? I know we didn't make the playoffs in 15, 16, or 17. We did make it last year and lost in round 2 to Boylan. I am pretty sure our enrollment is above 750. How did we make 4A? Can someone please explain?[/QUOTE]

I use the IHSA preseason guidelines for polling purposes...and I only changed Phillips when it was announced that they elected to move up to 7A....otherwise I've used this same enrollments which list St Francis as 4A...it's also pinned to the top of this message board

St Francis is not multiplied due to lack of playoff wins. Enrollment per IHSA is 739, which puts them at the high end of 4A.

this is spot on. the only thing i'll add is that sterling's qb this year (cooper willman) is a bigger difference maker this season than he was last season when he split time at qb and played db full time.

This has been covered already. Most folks want to see a couple playoff wins to buy in on how good they really might be. That said, congrats on the great year so far.

I don't think WA's performance in the SW Prairie is helping their cause either.

1 since 2014 when we made the semis. So we don't make it in 15, 16, 17 and win 1 in 19. This means we are not in 5A?

Correct. If a school fails to win 3 playoff games in previous 2 seasons, they are not subject to the multiplier.

Sterling is banged up right now, they are down to 140 pound sophomore running back, he had 5 touchdowns last night, the lines are playing well and the QB is elusive and playing better than last year but they will need to get healthy to go as far as the last two years.
