Yeah, I agree, but that doesn't mean the two year average enrollment rule isn't bad. There are public schools in the far SW, NW and west burbs that are now 8A and were 4A/5A a decade ago.
The whole two year average thing is just weird and arbitrary.
Burlington Central seems to be on that trajectory as well
St. Ignatius was 5A I think when started, then they were 6A when they made the semis in 2022, then they went to 8A last season. I don't know if they petitioned down and it was only for a certain time. They're enrollment never significantly changes since they are very selective and turn many away.
Actually, DCP's sophmore class will fill about half of the varsity roster next season, as juniors. That class is projected to carry more talent than former soph classes to the varsity team. The freshmen crop this season carried about 60 athletes and proved ahead in development. This playoff team already rostered 6 freshmen who have seen varsity playoff action.
I’ve heard kids from my former grade school are considering DePaul now (far NW side). More kids going there over ND and pats from what I’ve heard. Loyola still owns most of them, but DePaul definitely making some progress!
Yes. they beat Reavis 6-0 and that was the very first Class 6A Champuonship. Mt Carmel won the 5A title which was their first of many to come
I have to think Pats takes the grunt of this recent rise by DePaul. But 2X Basketball State Champs and early favorite for a 3rd and not Football success with a good shot at a 4A ring will bring in student athletes
I stand corrected on the specific numbers.
Point is that, while I agree it is abnormal, some schools experience some fairly dramatic enrollment swings. See Minooka, Plainfield and Oswego in the past 20 or so years. I’m sure there have also been a good amount of private schools that are no longer operating that experienced significant enrollment decline before they ceased operations.
I never liked the 2 year enrollment cycle. Somebody should explain the benefits of it to me.
My point is DePaul and STL are extreme examples of short-term enrollment boost, the two year cycle really comes into play. The others you mention are happening over 10-20 years. So, yes they have jumped a few classes but it's over a much longer period of time. The 2-year enrollment cycle wouldn't really make a huge different when the growth is over a decade or two.
Why not adjust every year? Does the ISBE only request enrollment numbers every two years?
