Cyclones' toughest foe? It's SHG

Thirteen games into this season, Sacred Heart-Griffin has yet to find an opponent that has offered a challenge. The Cyclones get it over early, too. They have outscored opponents 283-28 in the first quarter and 542-62 in the first half. That's an average halftime score of 41.6-4.8.

The Cyclones had running clocks - a 40-point lead in the second half means the clock stops only for scores and timeouts in high school football - in each of their first 12 games, which of course can do no worse than tie a state record. Could it possibly happen again in Game 13?

Sure enough four plays later Anthony DiNello rumbled 3 yards for the touchdown, and Colin Boyd's conversion kick made it 49-7 and meant the second half would be played without stoppage.

"We're definitely conscious of it," Bowman said about the Cyclones' streak of running clocks. "We talk about it."

"We had shirts made this week for the playoff game (with) "Start the Clock" on the back. We always pride ourselves on scoring a lot of points and not letting a lot being scored on us. It's always exciting getting that and it makes the games go quicker."

"It's a great feeling. We want to be able to have another shot at Sacred Heart. That's been our goal the whole season," senior defensive end and captain Eric Kibbey said.

"We've been working up towards this game all season. It's going to be the toughest game we've played. We've got to leave it all on the field. We went into halftime winning (21-14 in 2013), but they had all of the momentum. We came out flat in the second half. It's just kind of left a bad taste in our mouths so I want a second chance for us to get redemption, go out with a win."

Broncos have to be 28 point dogs going into this one. Bad match ups in all phases of game.

Having covered Montini in the past and Coach A, I gotta believe this one will end up being close. SHG hasn't been in a close game since - well, ever. That has to account for something in a title game you would think.

As a bronco fan I am feeling better about this game than last year. Last year's undefeated status going into championship just concerned me. I think bronco actually does better as an underdog. Not sure they will win, I just feel better about potential outcome. Bronco defense is peaking at right time and for most part, everyone is healthy. Last year bronco number one tackler was hurt in semi final game and out for final. Coaches also know what they are up against to a better degree than last year and hopefully will make good adjustments.. I think Norgle plays better against this SHG team than last yrs bronco QB played.

jwar,

Can't wait -- I'll be rooting for all my favorite teams at state including Naz, Provi and the Bronco's. Not staying for the 8A game.

hmmm that sounds familiar just like 09 when jca was 30 point favorites. Nobody in Lombard cares. They will be focused and ready? can't wait

I hope the Bronco's are prepared for SHG. Their have been two teams for Montini they have struggled with, one was Driscoll and the other is SHG.

They both play similar styles of football. SHG's QB is likely the state's player of the year and can run and throw. I don't know how you can stop him. In fact, I believe you cannot stop him but need to contain him.

I think it was interesting watching SHG's interview after the state championship game last. year. SHG made an adjustment by telling his QB to keep an eye on Montini linebacker Nile Sykes. If Sykes dropped back in coverage, then SHG's QB was instructed to run with the ball. If Sykes, rushed the QB then he was instructed to throw the football.

Montini also had a tough time handling the SHG defensive line in the 2nd half. These two changes gave the game to SHG.

you cant really compare shg to driscoll. We struggled with Driscoll in the past because we weren't at the level we have been the past couple of years. Not really close. Not taking anything away from Driscoll

emillika, good to see we are in the same boat. MCHS +28. Not sure they can handle SHG. :)

What a game for Tyler Saturday. Serious skills there, he (and you) should be very proud!

Montini will need to keep it close. The Broncos have played tougher competition. The SHG starters haven't had to play a full 3 quarters, let alone 4. All that being said, I still think SHG rolls in this one. Montini's defense has played very well in the playoffs, but they haven't faced any opponent with anywhere near the weapons of the Cyclones. And I don't see this version of Montini being able to keep up in a shootout.

THIS team has out scored last years team in total PPG. 2013 was 33.4 and this year is 34.2. Last years defense was obviously better at allowing 12.4 PPG vs this years 16.1.

I would argue this team has as much ability to score as the last two years. Especially with the improvement in the overall running game. Also the run defense since about week 4 has been much improved.

Emillika....thanks for the stats. After last year, Montini will have additional motivation. In fact, the challenge for the Montini coaches may be to not allow the players to get too hyped for the game. And no program feels more at home in a state title game than the Broncos, since this will be their sixth in a row. I'm sure they won't be intimidated by SHG.

However, I just don't see Montini winning. Gabe Green is a three-year starter. He burned Montini's defense last year. He seems to have more weapons at his disposal this year, not to mention an additional year of experience. The Cyclones have not been slowed down, let alone stopped. It's a tall order for the Broncos. We shall see.

A 28 point underdog for a team that plays the schedule that Montini does with the coaching staff and the athletes they have. With 27 wins and 1 loss in playoff games in the last 5 years. The revenge factor on top of it all . This game will be decided by a touchdown!

Do you think SHG's QB Gabe Green is comparable to the LWE QB 2 years ago, Tom Fuessel? Both QB's can really run and both can throw.

The Bronco's played against Fuessel two years ago. The only defense that could stop him somewhat was Glenbard West.in the state championship game. Wherever Fuessel ran against GW he was surrounded by 3 GW defenders.

If I were Montini I would check out the LWE/Glenbard West state championship game from two years ago and watch how they defended Fuessel.

Montini could use this to defend against a similar QB in Gabe Green.

Or they could just watch the tape of last years 5A title game when Gabe Green ran by them

Wassup, I just finished my comparative analysis of both teams.

This takes into account the strength of schedule, scores vs. opponents based on their strength, returning impact players, D1 talent, coaching, past records and travel arraignments of the teams for a 10:00 am game.

Surprisingly, Montini is an eleven point favorite in this one.

Teetime,

If your giving me SHG and 11points please tell me where to place the wager, I'd like to pay off my house. While I think Montini will keep it close and maybe even win, I see no way to arrive at them being an 11 point favorite.

I think the best defensive weapon GW used against Tom Fuessel was the late hit. However, saying that, GW was superb as a defense that year as well.

I'm with WIU. Some seriously cheap play in that game, and I remember a pretty aggressive thread with a for/against kicking the kid who through the worst cheap shot out of the game. Loved that LWE team, gutsy, physical, solid.

After watching two years of SHG beating Montini in the state title game, I still am not sure what area's Montini needs to improve to get past the Cyclones??

I noticed SHG which is a great team lost both of their running backs in the game against Montini. I think Montini was the only physical team they had to play in all of their playoff games.

Question -

Do you think SHG would still get to the championship game if they had to go through the very physical 5A north bracket??

I know SHG can beat any very physical team for one game --- but can they do it for 2-3-4 games in a row. Let's just say could they get through JCA, Woodstock Marian and Geneseo three weeks in a row.

And even if they beat those 3 teams in a row, how many key injuries do they have playing all those very physical football teams. They lost 2 key players (both their running backs) just in the Montini game.

Does SHG lose 5-6 key players before the state title game if they are playing through the 5A north bracket (the black & blue bracket)??

If if's and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas.

If Peoria is in the Northern Bracket, would they have fared better in the Semi's with their size and speed against a team not as good as SHG? They were pretty dang physical.

If there wasn't a 20-30 mph wind that limited SHG's passing game to going one way, would they have put up 50 instead of 29?

One of SHG's runningbacks it appeared was hurt on a fluke play in the endzone when his foot caught when a Montini player for whatever reason thought it a good idea to try a cheap shot to strip the ball 5 yards into the endzone and twisted the SHG kid. That's not an injury caused by physical play, that's an injury caused by stupid play.

If...

If...

Or for that matter, a CCL or ESCC schedule? They were not challanged until the championship game.

I guess I am missing the point here.

Was Montini missing key players on Saturday because of their "Brutal" playoff path?

Didn't SHG still win the game minus the two running backs that were injured?

I know its fun to speculate, but SHG was better than Montini on Saturday. Offensively they were banged up, but they proved defensively they are more than capable of hanging.

True SHG was better than Montini this year but I do think there is a big discrepancy especially in class 5A between playing in the north and south brackets.

That's why I definitely would like to see a 1-32 seeding in each bracket taking the state's geography out of it.

I do think the 5A north has more very physical teams compared to the south. Regardless I think SHG was by far the best team in 5A. I would just like to see them tested a little more by playing tougher teams along the way.

This discussion exposes a widely held myth on this message board. Teams need to play a tough schedule in order to prepare them for an extended playoff run. It's bunk. I'll take an easier path...with the expectation of a healthier team....especially for the 5A and below levels. Did Lemont play a tough schedule? Did C-G? Did SHG? IMO, none of them did, and they were all prepared to play in the championship games.

I know some teams like to schedule tough teams early in the season just to expose their weaknesses and they then know what they have to work on.

Agreed. Naz played a good but not at schedule and seemed to do just fine in the playoffs as well.

I think if your team is talented enough and well-coached as all of the 16 teams downstate were it doesn't matter in the end.

I think this was the best group of title games we have had in a while. With one or two exceptions - excluding the dominations by Rochester, Naz and EPC - we really had great games this weekend.
