SHG 49 Rochester 42 FINAL

All..... 100% is a funny thing. SHG hasn't been that since before the season regardless what you might have heard. A late injury in a game maybe or not. Having talked with Rocket fans Beatty the stud he is has taken dings for quite some time. Rolling that dice eventually has consequences at unexpected times. Ratsy
With the amount of hits he takes at his size it was unlikely he was 100% going into the game.

All.... Which happens when the coaching staff (said to be the best blah blah blah in Illinois ever) formulate their total team success on him. Ratsy

You do what you have to do to win.

Rochester is a traditional pass first offense. What I watched last night was an Rochester offense that didn’t have a true QB and thus Derrick Leonard created an offense that put his best athlete at QB and did tons of unique formations, shifts, motions, schemes to win the game.

Let’s not forget. SHG has far superior players than Rochester. It’s Rochester’s schemes that keep them in these games and sometimes win.

All..... The CS8 went to a closed conference in 2010. Cyclone fans dearly miss the good "ole days" scheduling two non cons a year back in the day. Week one against the Broncos home and away year after year was a great way to start out the season. Ratsy

Some serious battles back in the day. 2000s but also in the 1980s. There were non-cons we played where you knew there was going to be some serious hitting going on, SHG and Providence were at the top of the list.

Not discounting what he has done. He built and maintained an amazing program. Someone had asked about comparing it to a Chicago conference. It would be like putting Loyola in the a closed conference with the local public schools. They would roll everyone except Maine South and then be highly seeded in the playoffs so likely have 10+ wins a year.
Sorry they wouldn’t roll LWE. Bruce your reaching.

Good point on the passing attack. Hank was playing out of position to help the team and there was not a go to Receiver for the first time in my memory. The run first offense could continue next year, as Derek’s best returning Receiver Parker Gillespie could be moved to QB and Rochester returns three starting Offensive Lineman.

While SHG usually has more size and speed than Rochester, I would argue that isn’t always true. The 2017 and 2019 Rockets were at least as athletic if not more than the Cyclones.

That would really increase the “odds” of you making the postseason though, right? I mean, based on your posts on IHSS, you were extremely fortunate to even be playing in a semifinal. Got there “against all odds” I believe was the phrase you used. As if you were 5-4 and winning nail biters.

The teams seemed fairly evenly matched from a talent standpoint last night, IMO. Derek Leonard is a great coach. One of the best in the state, but let's not exaggerate things to elevate his status.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is how important extra points were in this game as Rochester failed three. The first was a kick that hit the inside of the goal post and bounced out(I think on a normal goal post it goes in). Then there was also a two point throw where it appeared the ball was caught, but no officials had a great angle position so it was called incomplete(I was behind the end zone near the sideline so I had a better angle).

If the Rockets convert one or two of the PATs they miss, they’d have been down 8 points on their final possession instead of 10. They kicked a field goal on that drive since they were down 10, but I think they have decent odds of getting a touchdown if that’s all they needed. All that said they still needed to figure out how to stop SHG after that.

I had absolutely no dog in the fight so don’t take this as bitter complaints from a Rockets fan, I just wanted to illustrate how close this game was. Hats off to both teams on a great game.

It was a reverse of the first game. In Week 3, SHG missed an extra point and a short field goal, while Rochester made all their extra points and one field goal.

Hank Beatty is all around one of the best HS Football players i've ever seen in Illinois. Ridiculously good slot receiver, shifty, quick in and out of breaks, catches everything, never gets caught in the open field, Then he transitions to QB because the team doesnt have one, and if you had never seen him play before, you'd think he's played QB all his life. Quick release, accurate, and lethal running the read option. Kid is a stud. Would have been interesting if he didnt commit so early what other schools would have pulled the trigger. But hopefully the UofI staff finds a way to get this kid on the field early, could see him excel at returning punts as a true freshman.

Lord knows the Illini could use him. They fair catch every punt and kickoff.
