For several years prior to the CS8's expansion to ten teams, SHG had a home and home series with Montini that produced some great games and help both prepare for the playoffsAssuming SHG and Rochester will come north at some points to play Chicagoland schools. Love that
Was a great little rivalry to start the year. Two fantastic programs. Hoping for something similar in the near future! For several years prior to the CS8's expansion to ten teams, SHG had a home and home series with Montini that produced some great games and help both prepare for the playoffs
Indeed we do!QND has such a cool history
Great post, hope you become a regular contributor to our CS8 discussions.Indeed we do!
We're excited the conference let a second Catholic join the mix. We're nothing close to what SHG has in terms of football success, but we've built a brand over the years we're pretty proud of. Small Catholic HS, big family atmosphere and we travel well. It's been a long, difficult battle from our days in the River Trails and getting the boot from the local Hee-haw's in Forgotonia to joining the Mid-State 6 (and winning it a couple times) to finally taking a head-first leap into the crumbling West Central Conference to finally back to independence and the struggle of playing a 9 game schedule with about 30+ hrs of road trips some years.
Our HC is no slouch either... "Big Jack" Cornell is no stranger to big time football. QND alum, Illini alum and played in the NFL.
QND football isn't what it was circa early 2000s (Semi's '04) or even into the early 2010s (4 straight 4A quarterfinal appearances) but Coach Cornell has done a pretty darn good job with the depleted numbers/talent he's had since taking the job with 3 playoff appearances and a 2019 run to the 3A semi's. I don't think QND will be competing for the conference title too often given the divisional setup and SHG across the board. I'm willing to bet we surprise some folks though!
All that said, QND is simply glad to have found a football home. The IHSA has made it abundantly clear that they have no intentions of stepping in and solving the scheduling issue for independent schools who geographically get the shaft from conferences who choose to close up and hit the ignore button. I feel for our brothers down in Breese (Mater Dei), an many others, and I hope they soon find a home as well.
You can count on it.Great post, hope you become a regular contributor to our CS8 discussions.
You are referring to Garrett Goebel. He was also a 2-time heavyweight state champion in wrestling. He holds the State of Illinois record for most wins in a wrestling career. Went to Ohio State, where he started at nose guard. Captain of their 2012 undefeated team.All....I remember that entire series week one non con with the Broncos. Losing in 07 and 08 (SHG later on taking the 6A title) but the other six games played between the two the Cyclones came out with the W. A long and fun road trip to Lombard other then the toll booths on 355. (lol) A great way to open up the season. I was also fortunate enough with one of those away games to talk with Coach Andriano.
A question on the 2007 game for someone that would remember. It was away for SHG. I believe the weather a day or so before was so bad the Bronco field was unplayable. If I recall correctly the game was switched to Lisle on turf. Anyway Montini had this stud defensive player that created havoc for the Cyclones during the entire game. Can't remember his name. Anyone? Ratsy

All... Oh I remember him. Spectacular player. But the one (found the roster) I remember was LB/RB Dex Jones. Did quite a bit in that game. RatsyYou are referring to Garrett Goebel. QND will be a football only member of conference.Nice post, welcome aboard. We had some QND guys used to post to the old SHG board before it folded. Nice guys.
St. Theresa got the shaft from their conference this year and I still remember when elements of the old Capitol and original Big Twelve snuck around and screwed the Springfield schools with no warning. It pretty much permanently destroyed the Springfield HS and Lanphier programs and wreaked havoc at Griffin.
I agree QND will be competitive from the beginning, at least with the bulk of the conference and your other sports probably better for it.
