Chad Hetlet put on a clinic at LT this week in every phase of the game. His defense held a top tier QB in check by allowing 107 yards between the 20's but nothing in the Red Zone. LT's one scoring drive for a FG started at GW's 30 after the opening KO was returned 60 yards.
GW held the LT rushing game under 30 yards and Hetlet dialed up a series of delayed blitzes that rattled Bryant all night while picking up three sacks.
On offense Hetlet and Sig quickly realized LT was focused on stopping Pierce (kid again proved that he is a special talent) and the GW passing game, so GW unleashed a running game that put up 467 yards against a very large, physical LT d line.
My favorite part of the game was when GW, after a 7 minute drive to go up 14-3 with 1:30 left in the half, stopped LT with a three and out. LT had thrown two incomplete passes and a draw on third down to run the clock. While every coach on the sidelines, and many of us in the stands hollered for a timeout to get one more drive, Hetlet emphatically shut everyone down.
Hetlet knew better than all of us that this was not going to be some crazy, do whatever it takes to win a football game moment. Nope, he knew that he had a plan and that plan was methodical and brutal. He knew GW was getting the 2nd half KO and that GW was running downhill. He knew a 21-3 lead after that first 2nd half drive would cause LT to get nervous and he knew he could dial up the right blitz to force a three and out on LT's first chance to respond. He knew OC Sig could dial up a back breaking drive to make it 28-3 with GW scoring 21 points and chewing about 20 minutes of clock against LT's three plays in that span.
Hetlet knew all of that with 1:10 left in the first half and he knew he had a plan in place that just needed time to play out. Not sure how all that played out or was discussed on TV, but the feeling in the stands was incredibly calming to everyone when they recognized in that one moment that Hetlet was in total control of that game.
Hands down
