Highland grad Sam Laporta, starting tight end for TEU named week 1 captain for the Hawkeyes. He also represented the team at the BigTen media day earlier this summer.

Definitely a miss for Lovie and crew but in his defense most of the offers LaPorta seemed to have at the time were mid majors. The whole Big Ten missed on him.

I'm very interested to see how Mark Gronowski and the Jackrabbit O does against that nasty Iowa D. Quite a few NV kids will be there to support him in his return. Here's hoping for an injury-free and exciting game.

True that he had no other B1G offers.

But - He didn’t attend camps at other Big Ten schools like he did at Illinois or come from another Big Ten state like he does from Highland only being two hours from Champaign.

The Illini did have Barker and Dorsey on the roster or in the recruiting class along with Ford transferring in. It was not one of their needs and they ended up with a small class that year.
Anyway it has worked out for LaPorta. The Illini could have lined up Kittle and Kelce the last couple of years and the OC wouldn’t scheme to get them the ball and/or the qb couldn’t make a throw
