If the PLAYOFFS started today.... (Week 8)

Every Monday(-ish), I bracket the 256 playoff teams using the IHSA Playoff Outlook. This is NOT a prediction. These are NOT my opinions. It is simply the most logical way the playoffs would be bracketed, using the IHSA's specific system, if today's standings were the final standings.

Each week I usually have to add/subtract teams to get a true 256. The Outlook doesn't adjust for a conference champion falling below the cutoff. I take care of that before proceeding.

My adjustments.....

The CPS Illini-Second City Conference did not have a representative in the playoff field. I inserted their conference leader, Chicago Military Academy/Bronzeville (4-2/18), into 4A. This gave us 257 teams.

I need to eliminate 1 team. 3 teams were tied at 4-3/25 at the bottom of the playoff field. They are Back of the Yards (5A), Sullivan (4A), and Red Bud (2A). One has to go!

The first two tie-breakers, of course, are wins and playoff points.

The THIRD tie-breaker is total wins by defeated opponents. Sullivan has 7. Back of the Yards and Red Bud have 5. Sullivan is safe, and slots in as team 255.

The FOURTH tie-breaker is head-to-head. This doesn't apply to these two teams.

The FIFTH tie-breaker is number of playoff teams faced. Back of the Yards and Red Bud have both played 2 teams in this playoff field.

The SIXTH tie-breaker is number of wins by teams played that qualified for the playoffs. Back of the Yards playoff foes have combined for 10 wins... Red Bud's only have 9. Buh-bye, Red Bud!
Back of the Yards, the most Chicago-sounding school ever, is team 256.

By the way, the SEVENTH tie-breaker is points allowed in games against teams that qualified for the playoffs. I probably would've skipped that step and moved on to the EIGHTH tie-breaker... COIN FLIP!

Now I just need to adjust the classes to balance them at 32 teams each. We put Bronzeville into 4A, Kewanee slides down to 3A, Alton Marquette slides down to 2A, and Red Bud is removed from 2A and the entire playoff field.

THAT'S IT!

Random Thoughts:

-Some big teams obviously lost in week 7 and fell out of the 256, and several teams scooted up to a bigger class... notably Benet and East St. Louis.

-Bones... Raider Nation swaps out Taft for Maine South. As a guy who grew up halfway between those two schools, I feel obligated to let you know that Maine South would be a smidge tougher to beat. Sorry pal.

-Loyola @ Glenbard East, yikes. Reminds me of JCA @ EP 2012. I should have a little award or nickname for the most interesting fake matchup like these each week. How about "The Powerhouse @ Paper Tiger Fake Game of Week If The Playoffs Started Today". Short and sweet, Either way, Oswego can pack their bags for Wilmette the first weekend of November.

-Curie @ LWE. For the CPS teams that aren't exceptional like Phillips, maybe there should be a "lack of success" factor. Multiply by .65. Would it really matter if Taft and Curie were in 6A instead of 8A? My 2004 idea that factored roster size and/or program size into your classification was roundly mocked. I think Driscoll had 250 students in school with a varsity roster of 70, and Morton had 7500 students in school with a varsity roster of 22. Which school should be playing Winnebago in the post-season?

-5A and 6A have enough Chicagoland in the lower bracket, that an upset or two could wipe out anything south of the ICE conference by the semi's.

-I'm skipping the biggest/smallest schools in each class for now because wifey just got home with groceries (read, cookies and candy). Maybe I'll edit them in later.

Wow....interesting!

I did something similar tonight for 8A. I encourage you to look at each teams remaining schedule. A couple of thoughts on 8A, that affect 7A, in order of likelyhood:

  • Elgin/East Aurora winner should make it as a 5-4 Team (wow...I just wrote that)
  • Plainfield East should make it as a 5-4 team (remaining teams have 1 win, combined)
  • York should make it as a 5-4 Team (should beat OPRF this weekend)
  • All have higher playoff points than DGS as an fyi.
What this means is the following teams get sent down to 7A in order of who goes 1st:
  • Benet (7-2/6-3)
  • Downers North (6-3/5-4)
  • Glenbard North (6-3/5-4)
How fragile the playoff bracketing is! That really starts thing rolling down hill.

Losses to Rita and then facing Naz with an unbeaten season on the line? Rwings limp into playoffs?
I wouldn’t say limp, it might help them. They definitely did have the easier part of their season earlier in the season. LA, SR, Naz to close out the season is a gauntlet but might prepare them for playoff football if they enter it healthy.

East St. Louis is quite the wildcard. They will be a heavy favorite in whichever class they play, but the impact on the other teams is considerable. If they play in 5A, I will go out on a limb and say Prairie Ridge is the favorite in 6A. However, if East St. Louis plays in 6A, I can see any one of six teams [Joliet Catholic, Montini, Hillcrest, Sterling, St. Rita or Kankakee] winning the 5A championship.

With many key regular season games still pending, here are my picks for the other championships.

8A Glenbard West
7A Nazareth
4A Rochester
3A Byron
2A Gibson City
1A Lena-Winslow

Only Lena-Winslow is number one in any of the various A.P. polls.

It seems like they are going to put East Side in 6A. That's what they have them listed as on IHSA website. Eventhough they've been ranked #1 in 5A all season. I guess they won't know officially until next Saturday on pairings night. It will be interesting to see what happens.

No one gets put anywhere except for petitioning schools. ESL will either be the smallest in 6A or the largest in 5A depending on qualifiers above them in enrollment.

If ESL moves up to 6A I’d predict Rita to win 5A....still can’t picture Rita in 5A though.....

it will change after Friday, but I would hate to see a second round game between PR and CG. At least get them thru to the quarters.

I like your GBW pick. That is one of the teams I wouldn't want to play in first round

Except they’ve been beaten....Naz lost week one
...to a team fielding an ineligible player I'm hearing. By the time the dust settles on the investigation, it's most likely Ritter forfeits all their wins in which he played when he wasn't supposed to. The whole administration there should lose their jobs.

Such is the reward for being bad.
I've chewed this bone previously. It is wantonly ridiculous to waive the X1.65 no matter how bad you become. It's no longer a multiplier then, it's a success factor... not to be confused with the... success factor.

I’d rather be the team on a hot streak going in. See: Washington Nationals

I know you said this is not a prediction but the logical way it will break down. Everything I have seen has the 9-0 (if there is one) from the SW prairie being the 1 and the 8-1 team somewhere in the 8-9 range.

Oh Wow, Didn’t know, saw there was an undefeated Naz thread yesterday but I thought it was a smack talk thread so I skipped it.
