Edwardsville Coach Steps Down

Coach Martin leaves the Tigers with an elite winning percentage and Edwardsville has no easy task in replacing him. Seems like a lot of big names have stepped down this offseason.
This is still a premier job in my opinion...tremendous school district with unreal facilities and community support....

Absolutely. The Tigers have everything under the sun and undoubtedly have the athletes. Seems like they are elite at every sport there is, football is probably a weak spot compared to most other sports there. And that’s no knock on what they’ve achieved as of late.

It will be interesting to see how the Edwardsville position plays out. For a long time, Edwardsville was the gold standard for coaching on the Illinois side of the river in all sports. But ever since Ed Hightower left, as coaches like Lori Blade (basketball/softball) and Mike Waldo (basketball) have departed, they've mostly been replaced by in-house hires. Before, it seems like they went out and had their pick of some of the top coaches in the region.

All.... Postseason 4A domination and the traditional "power" teams involved (other than of course 21 and 22) is a bit different then swimming into the deep end of the pool. Still it would be fun to watch and follow..... Ratsy

Id disagree with Waldo being any sort of gold standard in bball in the metro east. Its Bennie Lewis, and its not even close.

Let me clarify. I meant if you could take a school's head coaches in all sports as a group, you would probably take Edwardsville's. Also Bennie Lewis retired after the 2000 season. Waldo was probably the region's best coach from that point on.

Super late reply to this thread, but I haven't logged on since last season. Sorry.

Coach Waldo was at Edwardsville forever, but Coach Blade, Coach Martin (as an assistant) and many others were actually recruited by Coach Daugherty when he was the athletic director. Daugherty did an excellent job of building up Edwardsville's athletic programs. Interestingly enough, it was Hightower that decided not to rehire Coach Daugherty when he tried to return to Edwardsville and instead hired one of Daugherty's former assistants, Coach Martin.

I think Edwardsville does a bit more in house hiring these days because the programs have had a chance to grow and legacies have been established paving the way for alumni and assistant coaches from successful eras to get new positions. For a long while, Edwardsville was mostly just a baseball town and when Coach Pile retired after establishing a successful legacy, one of his former players was able to take over. Now that Edwardsville has gotten better at several other sports and established solid programs, it's been easier to hire within, although I do still believe that they could benefit from filling some positions with coaches from outside of the region.
