How about ESL v. LA? All breaks No gas all the way to Wilmette. Speed vs. D. I do not think that ESL makes more stops than LA in this match up and LA's O (exception 2018) can put up points. Your thoughts?

I've challenged that before - seems there are multiple outlets that crown their own.

This is what USA Today has for 1989:
1989
1. Cleveland St. Ignatius (13-0)
2. Odessa, Texas Permian (16-0)
3. Fontana, Calif. (14-0)
4. Pittsburgh Upper St. Clair (15-0)
5. Rockingham, N.C. Richmond Co. (15-0)
6. East St. Louis, Ill. (14-0)
7. Hazelwood, Mo. East (14-0)

Althoff, ESL and Hazelwood all won titles that year. Our only loss was to Hazelwood in the opener - future San Diego Charger, Terrell Fletcher, got us with a fourth-quarter pick-six to give his team the nine-point win.

We did not lose again until after I graduated.

Thanks.

It's great he is big supporter of his team, and they were a very very good team. I just can't find anywhere that they were rated number one. I'd do the same post if anyone claimed to rated #1 in the country and could not document it.

Why is it important? It's an opinion poll as NONE of the teams play each other. USA Today is just one poll

1985 was great team. But we are talking about 1989. A very good team just not rated #1 in the nation that year by anyone that the rest of us can find.

LWE vs JCA
I don’t believe they have player each other and being local it would draw a big crowd.

If you can read it says he won 2 national titles.

Unfortunately everything from 1989 is not on the internet. Apparently someone thought they were national champs somewhere. It's no different then USA today compared to Max Preps and Rivals. Prep Nation also had a poll at one time as well. In 2016 ESL was 17 USA Today expert ranking, 15 USA today computer ranking and 70 Max Preps ranking.

Point is the fact that you only have USA today ranking and trying to make it law simply because other ranking from 1989 aren't on the internet says you have a hidden agenda. Not sure what it is and really don't care. The fact that it is mentioned in article says that someone other than Flyer fans recognize the national championship as well. Good luck with your quest to prove something from 1989!

Still trying to find it. It's a quest like climbing Everest.

If you google the right phrase, it leads back to a thread here in which I first questioned the claim.

That was my junior year - our front door was six miles from theirs.

I’m sure somewhere someone (insignificant) named them a national champ - but I did not hear about it. I do believe Stl Post D ranked Hazelwood 1, ESL 2 and Althoff 3. Three state titles.

The size HE had - bigger than us and we were bigger than ESL - set them apart. That was the only 300 pounder I ever had to block (only punt team - I was second string then.) T Fletcher as good or better than Chris Moore. And Homer Bush as a receiver, for that matter.

No matter. If your in the top 25 your good. 2005 LWE finished #9.
It’s hard to say who is #1 because they don’t play each other. Enjoy having a good year and be happy.
