Carmel Corsairs 12 @ Fenwick Friars 36 FINAL

Hosty looked really good out there taking the deep shots to Smith and Marshall. Obviously you’d like to have the starting guy out there but Hosty looks up to the task.
Quite a courageous effort by Hosty tonight.

His father, Ed (Fenwick ‘92), passed away from cancer this morning.

This game plan for JCA is…… what?
JC showed some offensive diversity today and looked ok doing it. Lot of shotgun and quick passes to the flats, even on first down and likely running downs. But in this particular matchup, I think that was a net negative. While they executed the passing game fairly decent at times, the big interception and a few poorly timed incompletions were the only thing to stop the JC offense.

Against a slightly overmatched opponent like PC, they could have thrown zero times today and run it 60 plus times and they likely put up substantially more yards and points than they did.

I hate to say go back to the stone age and just pound it exclusively, but against some teams, that is how you match up best. That said, I get that heading into the playoffs they probably want to keep working on their passing sets, especially after a week off.

While running the ball 60 times today may have been the best way to get a win today, that may not have been the best way to prep for when they will inevitably need to air it out a bit more in the future.

Can someone tell why PC waited until only 45 seconds left in the game to call its first time out? JCA had already run off 3 minutes of clock. And driven about 40 yards. Odd.
My thought is that JC had the ball around midfield and first and 10 with about 3 minutes to go. I imagine PC was going to call timeout, but 2-3 times in a row they gave up 6-8 yard runs on first down. So it went 8 yard gain, 3-5 yard gain for a first down, 8 yard gain, 3-5 yard gain for a first down.

The clock stops temporarily on a first down. So you don't get your best bang for your buck taking a TO after a first down. It's best to take them before 2nd, 3rd, or 4th down because you save a few extra seconds. And PC's defense kept giving up 8 yard gains on first down and I assume the coaching staff was thinking "OK defense, get a stop here on 2nd down to earn us burning a timeout."
