It is rare when the best two boys prep baseball teams meet for the state championship. Often in baseball, the best teams are upset in the playoffs unlike in prep football and basketball.

I have followed both teams closely this year. I feel that they are the two most balanced teams in the state. Providence began the year ranked #1 and has played up to that ranking. They bring four Chicago Sun-Times "all-area" selections to the game. Lyons once again brings a conference championship team from the rugged WSC Silver.

Both teams have a balanced attack. Their starting line ups are loaded with both right and left handed batters. They can hit for average and power. All nine starters on both teams can hit. Both have pitching staffs that go four deep. Both teams make few errors. However, Providence defense appears to be flawless. The left side of their infield fields ground balls with perfection, never a bobble and their throws to first are on a rope.

Providence in a close one.
