Whips/Dean/Loner where are write ups on Rice/MC/Rita scrimmages?

I’m sure like the other team scrimmages, this night has become more vanilla over the last few years. Starters only play 2-3 series while running very basic plays and then it’s mostly the 2nd and 3rd teamers battling for the remainder of the scrimmage.

So based on what I saw in a 60-minute period last night and some feedback over last couple weeks…

QB - looks like both SRs are going to play. I think both can be “QB1” but do wish there was a clear-cut choice. I suppose it will depend on strength of opposing defenses.

RB - the Navy commit (5’11 200+) is solid and will get the bulk of carries with some change of pace guys as depth.

WR - a little on the smaller side (none over 6 ft) but top 3 have legit speed.

OL/TE - comprised of 8-9 seniors with good size. The LT (6’7 290) can move too and they expect a big season out of the returning RT. The OL should be the most improved group from last year. This unit might determine which QB plays more…

DL - replacing older Pierce is not possible from a size/ability standpoint but I like the makeup of this group. Will have to scrap against some bigger OLs though. The soph DT (6’3 250) looks the part as a D1 prospect - in the interior rotation for now with two SRs.

LB - younger Pierce (6’1 215) will be all over the place and the other 3 are solid seniors. Dependable group.

DB - very athletic group with a couple of juniors that have next-level potential. This unit was exposed last yr vs MC and LA. If they can hold own in ‘23, front 7 should be able to be a little more aggressive.

K - liked what I saw last night during FG time. Believe he’s getting some college interest.

Most important thing is I didn’t see any “glaring” weaknesses but that obviously could change in 6-days vs an 8A juggernaut.

Weighing the brutal schedule, returning players, rising juniors that impressed on soph level last season and year-two under current head coach, it wouldn’t surprise me if this team finished 4-5 or 7-2.

Let’s get at least 5…

I think Stec the Junior will be one of the starting DEs and Stack a Junior will man FS position

I didn't see MC's Brown and White but was told it was kept very vanilla. 1st unit out for 1 drive, scored, and then called it a night. Rest was backups. That's been the the M.O. of these recently. More of just a family night now. Was told the Freshman scrimmage was more entertaining then the Varsity.

If Rita's O-line can be anywhere near last year's version, it's going to be a very good year. Obvious? Yes.

Point I am making is to back up chaka's skilled position talent claim and the defense should be similar to year's past.

Having typed all that, please don't lose to Carl. Lol.

With Todd Kuska retiring this season, this fall has a different feel to it. Marty Hopkins was a product of the program. I look at it not so much what gets changed but more of what gets added. I’m thinking St. Rita will be playing a little more up tempo.

A very interesting hire is the new QB coach. If there is an increase in the effectiveness of the passing game DJ Stewart should have a tremendous year. If teams can’t load up the box, DJ will be very tough to take down on first contact.

Over the last two decades St. Rita has had a very a good kicking game. Coach Hopkins spent better than five seasons at Iowa as a coach. Some of that time was spent with special teams, and some as a d-line coach. I look for St. Rita to work hard at winning the field position battle every game and to get more out of the return teams.

This year's sophomore and junior’s classes are very talented and will push the seniors. Last year the varsity only lost to the #1 & 2 teams in the state.

Come playoff time, they should be a tough draw the first few rounds.
