What Decade Had the Top IHSA Head Coach's

Top 5 HC's of the decade?
Wow, great question. I think it's between the '80's and '90's.

1980's had guys like Leonard, Lenti, Korhonen, Darlington, Zinnani, Gillespie, and Senffner. Then in the 1990's you have that same list with the additions of Jeff Reents, Pat Ryan, and Dan Sharp.

I'll give the nod to the 1990's by a slim margin.

Ric Arend (Lena Winslow) 108-19, 4 1A titles.

I'll vote 90s too. LW's Rob Glielmi added to that list, state runner up and state championship in that decade

You are missing 3 of the most successful coaches of the 90's, they were all in the same conference also and played each other yearly which was interesting.

(1990s record only)

John Thorne WWS 110-16
4-Titles 2-Runner up

Larry McKeon NN 100-25
1-Title 1-Runner up

Joe Bunge NC 93-26
1-Title 1- Runner Up

Love Reents but he didnt even arrive until 1994 and finally got things going in 1996. Jim Unruh and Cully Welter brought home multiple titles in the 90s in the small class sector.

Sharp had much more success in the 2000-2010 decade. He did not get to JCA until 97

Montini's Andriano had a great run - 2004 to 2015. Over those 12 years Montini won 6 state championships and finished 2nd twice. Breakdown by class - 1 in 4A, 4 in 5A and 1 in 6A.

The 1970s was an era of very good coaching across the state.
Here are some who were among the best:
  • Jack Leese East Leyden
  • Pat Cronin St. Rita
  • Bill Graham Barrington
  • Tom Kavanagh St. Laurence
  • Bob Reade Geneseo
  • Gordie Gillespie Joliet Catholic
  • Bill Duchon, Glenbard West
  • Paul Adams, Deerfield
  • Murney Lazier, Evanston
  • Ben Murray, Rockford Boylan
We can all be grateful that several among them and a few others not listed there came together and convinced the IHSA to start a playoff system and name State Champions,
