The play in question

I would have agreed with you If CMU/OK St hadn't happened. Unfortunately it did

I agree however I don't think everyone is informed about the OK state game as much as they should be. Especially considering a lot of those crews ref little league all day Saturday and Sunday

well hold on gooms. why do you say that?? did they have an around the usa refs meeting updating every ref??? this makes absolutely no sense.

Easy to say after the fact. The heat of the game is intense as I am sure you know form experience. I am willing to bet over 50% of the crews would have gotten this wrong.

After the CMU/OKST situation this enforcement was discussed at every association meeting. We should know it even without that situation occurring. I am willing to bet 14-15/16 crews this past weekend would have nailed this.

What he said and 85-90% of the other varsity crews would have gotten it right too.

No one knew the rule including the coaches. To make statement that every other official would have correctly made this call is a stretch

I know a lot of guys who couldn't care less about knowing college rules, bc they're not worried about ever needing to know.

Let's not assume everyone knows/cared to hear about that game in OSI

I keep harping on CMU/OK ST for a reason. All varsity officials belong to one or more associations WHERE THEY REVIEW PLAYS LIKE THIS. I went to 2 meetings the week after AND BOTH REVIEWED THE PLAY.

OK Forget that. This was a play talked about a ton. Someone didn't check this? REALLY? I mean, Lord Help me.

The coaches may know rules and what a foul is but Id say most are not in tune to enforcements. Especially on a special enforcement like this, they dont go to rules meetings/take rules tests/quiz each other. Id say 90% of the time we dont give a 1st down on a 15yd facemask or DPI I still get "That should be a first down".
Every official doesnt need to know it, but 1/5 certainly should, and once the objection is put out there for the correct enforcement, thats usually when the light bulb comes on for the other guys who dont have the right thought process at the time. The fact that didnt happen is extremely disappointing.

It's clearly a reasonable requirement to expect the officials to know the rules and proper enforcement.

They clearly didn't Fenwick lost because of it. It's a shame in every sense.

I agree with stripes here.
I am just saying. gooms, you as a ref did not mention anything about any meetings..
now, with that said you assume everyone knows. I truly doubt any of them knows.
because I am sure it was not discussed by isha refs association. or every crew would have rule book with them.(which you stated is not the case because it would make you look bad).
and yes at the very least one should be up in the damn booth of the home team. and each coaching staff should be prepared for anything/everything, this is like not carrying a block to kick field goal in your bag, or losing it and not running to the equipment room to grab one. careless but what can you do. both teams agreed to what was the call, continued to play the game. and it did not benefit the right team in the end. I am willing to bet, had fenwick won, noone would have even mentioned this as a rule. or looked into. but, the rule needs to changed for sure.
and I am sure all Illinois refs will know this rule or amended rule next year.

The rule will not be amended by NFHS because I bet this the only time this was adjuicated wrongly. The IHSA definitely won't touch it.

A very likely scenario is that they huddled, one guy quoted the correct administration of the rule only to have another say, "that's a college rule, not a federation rule."

Maybe two of them knew the right way, but talked themselves out of it.

sorry that was poorly worded on my part. I meant it doesnt take every official knowing the rule for it to be enforced properly, it just takes one of the 5 to catch it and correct it for the crew. You are absolutely correct, all 5 should know the rule and enforcement without a doubt.

I agree stripes, I find it hard to believe all 5 didnt know, but whomever spoke up wasnt sure enough to hold to it and sell the others.

No worries Chief. Regardless, I think the officials should have the ability to reach out to a head of officiating or something like that. With technology and the like I would rather wait a few minutes and get it right then end up in the situation we have here.

I work for a softball association as a director on the weekends.. we have 6-10 diamonds going at once, working with me is a UIC or umpire in charge... anything like this is ran through him for clarification..

And I think something like this would be a very good resource. I cant expect every official to know every nuance of every rule. Especially in the high pressure situation of a state playoff game. Going forward this isn't a bad idea.

Pay a guy $1000 a week to be at home on Thursday nights, Friday nights and all day Saturday... each team is allowed three requests for rules verification a season...

That is a terrible idea. The three request per season.

I don't know if I would limit it. I would allow one per game per team in the regular season. In the post season, you don't use as many officials so a monitor on site at each location would be a good idea.

Too much is at stake now not to change the process some. This isn't to say the officials aren't capable, but to have this fall back in case of emergency is nice.

During Little League Tournament Play (All Star team that end up in the LIttle League World Series) there is a system where a team can challenge the APPLICATION of a rule. Teams can call the head of the district, region or Williamsport to get clarification of a rule. On certain days there may be a couple thousand games going on.

Not that difficult to have the head rules people available for a consult on the application when you have no more 128 games going during the playoffs on the first weekend. The past 2 days. 16 games.

The fact that an official did not pull out a rulebook is appalling.

What does the Plainfield North coach say to his team today?

We don't belong in the title game but we'll give it our best?

Something just dawned on me. Officials are always watching other officials at this time of year. Was it possible an official was there and tried to get down to the field,...

its wide right, that is a pretty straight on shot

wow!!!! words escape me.... Plainfield North needs to do the right thing here, teach their kids a life lesson and refuse the bid in the Championship game

That is a bad video shot. Cant see the ball when it goes near the upright.

To me I think its good. The fenwick players were right there they would have celebrated if not.
