Quarterfinals! With the exception of a couple of matchups, I never thought they'd look like this.

Loyola 41 Lincoln Way East 21: Loyola keeps chugging along without much of an issue here. Beast may be "down" right now and Loyola knows its a perfect moment to squash them.

Marist 34 Glenbrook South 10: It is great to see GBS, a program in the shadow of Loyola come out and have a great season, but the Loyola of the South Side will come up and breeze right through them.

Mount Carmel 29 Brother Rice 27: when the most famous Mount Carmel alum in God gets his hands involved in their win last week, you know something wonky is taking form.

Saint Rita 35 Hononegah 6: You'd think that Rita and Rice would have coordinated different starting times so they could have maximized on the profits as many fans would have gone to both games. Regardless, Hononegah's trip to 79th and Western won't be much fun.

Sycamore 20 Saint Patrick 19: Hats off to the Shamrocks on their achievement. I would have guessed that they made it this far at some point considering how many solid players and teams they have had throughout this century. And while my heart wants to pick the Shamrocks, I am taking Sycamore in this game. There is something to be said about programs who have a habit of being in the playoffs and playing deep in the playoffs. These kids understand the playoffs watching their brothers and friends go through it over the last decade.

Nazareth 24 Fenwick 23: I'm going to get frisky and take the upset here. Naz has been playing playoff games since week 4. This is not me indicting Fenwick by any means, this is just mid-November football and every now and then, things don't go to plan.

Joliet Catholic 35 Genoa Kingston 13: GK is a very good program, but they just aren't at the level of a lot of Catholic League programs. JC runs away with the W.

It's a beautiful thing seeing this many CCL/ESCC teams playing in the quarters. Let's go out and win four state titles.

LWE +28 vs Loyola - Loyola was extremely impressive last week. I really thought Naperville Central would keep it close. Four TDs against a program like LWE in the playoffs is just too much though. Beast keeps it to a 35-21 type game.

Marist -14 vs Glenbrook South - Impressive win for the Titans last week. Marist is a different animal and will continue to cruise. Marist wins 42-7.

BR +1 vs Mount Carmel - I am still pretty speechless about the ending of last week's MC/Batavia game. I think Brother Rice's offense will do enough to win this one. BR wins a shootout 49-45

St. Rita - 21 vs Hononegah - St. Rita's defense is one of the best in the state. They should be able to shut down Hononegah's offense. 35-7

St. Patrick -1 vs Sycamore - Another Shamrock opponent that I know next-to-nothing about. Going with the quality of schedule here as the Shamrocks continue on to the semis. 28-21.

Fenwick -8 vs Naz - Naz is playing their best football of the year. But Fenwick beat my Dons 42-7 and Naz barely escaped my Dons 24-21. Ipso facto, Friars win by two-ish TDs. 35-21.

Genoa-Kingston +30 vs JCA - The Hilltopper Invitational continues, but a proud G-K program covers the spread. 49-27

Fenwick probably wins but that was a very very different Naz team that played ND.

Always a good sign this deep into the playoffs and still a lot of football to lay a friendly wager on.

Loyola Academy -28. Ton of points but Loyola will backdoor cover this on a late pick 6.

Marist -14. Tough call. A lot of points on the road. i would tease this down to -7 if available at your local book.

Mount Carmel -1. Late MC money bets this down to a pick. Like i said last week. MC will dance on Rice 50 before the game. The refs will be humans. And all 200 MC fans will storm the field after because that's all the visitors sidelines holds. If your with the Caravan you are better off supporting the O'Briens and watching Brother Rice TV at Reilly's daughter.

St. Rita -21. Signs of preseason greatness.

Sycamore 1. The improbable Pats run is over.

Fenwick -8. Naz fans walk out chanting wait til next year...and they would be right.

Joliet Catholic Academy -31. Blowout.

God did not graduate from Mount Carmel, but His mother is very fond of us.
I'm just answering what he said in the post lol.

I talked to them both and the whole family is actually JCA fans being from so far south.

Frankfort +28: biggest spread in program history?

Glenview +14: how can I not take the points after their win over HC?

Chicago (Mount Carmel): teased line to MC -3 at +125. No way BR beats them 3 times in 7 months

Chicago (St. Rita) -21: like JCA, will not be tested in respective classes ;)

Sycamore +1: heart says Shamrock, soul says Spartan

La Grange Park (Naz) +8: if someone wants Friar -8, DM me

Joliet (Catholic Academy) -30: how many starters return in 2022? BR visits Memorial Stadium next season. Assuming it will be a slightly different game than 2021.

Bad news: St Pat's lost their uniforms.
Good news: Another school is loaning them theirs:

DHs1bP0VoAAUhIC

Rambler Big
Redskin Big
Caravan Big
Mustang Big
Shamrock Little
Friar Little
Hill Big
What, in your opinion, is the main difference between the Carmel Rice rematch? Is this simply BR animosity or game intelligence that you chose against BR versus Hillcrest this year and for them to possibly lose by double digits vs Marist? Now projecting a significant loss to a seemingly equal opponent. I'm always interested in learning more about games.

JC doesn’t bring a ton back on either side of the ball. I believe 4/5 of OL graduates. Leading receiver, QB, three top rushing running backs will all graduate. All three levels of defense lose the majority of their starters

all that said, there is still plenty of talent in the stable. Multiple 300 pounders who don’t start on the OL as underclassmen likely look to fill the voids. There are soph and junior WR/RB types who have played limited roles who would likely be key contributors on most any other team. defense is a little unknown but I think there is enough talent there to keep them competitive.

likely not enough to be anywhere near top 10 or 20 in the overall state rankings. Certainly not enough to entertain petitioning up to 8A, which is why those suggesting that they do so this year were so far off base. This was an exceptional senior class. Next year’s juniors and seniors should be good, but not good enough to hang with the best the state has to offer. If Rice is a legit 7A/8A contender next year, they should be favored by a fair margin over the inexperienced JC group. That said, if JC gels and peaks at the right time, they should be talented enough to give anyone headaches.

Is the CCL/ESCC slate the exact same next year for weeks 3-9 ,just flipping home/away?

Yes - same for weeks 3-9 with the home/away flip.

Actually most of their talented defensive line returns. The junior quarterback would start for most teams. Bonsu and VanTassel return to lead a solid receiving core. I would think they will be a playoff team but that depends on the schedule.

I do not have any hatred vs BR and I admit to being wrong on them this year. I know Hillcrest usually has alot of speed and it would be hard for any opponent to stop that much speed that early in the season after not seeing another team go 100% for so long. I was wrong. As for the Marist game, early on my double digit prediction did not look so stupid but then BR coaching staff made some adjustments and won by double digits themselves. A combination of Marist offense being pretty good all season, which they had a terribly down game vs BR and all the talk of BR having a tough season on D leading up to this game is what lead me in this direction. As for this weekends slugfest. Like said above it is difficult to beat an opponent twice in a year (3 times in 8 months) let a lone a rival and school that you clearly don't like very much. MC has a lot of momentum coming off there fun but controversial win over Batavia has had the tougher road. That helps in playoffs. Also high school kids do not take adversity well and BR really hasn't had to face much of that this year. If MC has a fourth quarter 7-10 point lead, I think the crusaders may be forced to do things they are not comfortable with which could give this game an ugly turn for them. NOTE: I believe I did pick Crusaders in early season meeting.

God the school from the SW quadrant of EP talks a lot of crap about St Rita

Oh, the sweet melodrama of quarterfinal’s week projected onto a gray November sky. That feeling you get on that 3rd and 3 for your team on the opponents forty yard line in the middle of the 4th quarter of a 14 all game is the last true human feeling left in our digital society.

I liken HS state playoffs to the Jason Isbell lyric in his song, speed trap town, “it’s a boy’s last dream and a man’s first loss”.

Now that I waxed poetic long enough, let’s get to this week’s picks.

LWE +28 Loyola pulls ahead in the second half to win decently in a better game that the score will indicate

GBS +14 Back door cover by the Titans. RedHawks may have figured some things out so may be able to pull away bigger and earlier than I am giving them credit for

BR +1 in a one score type of game, I’ll take Lausch 30-28. I also send out my appreciation to the BR faithful for their concern and interest for the path and games that their Catholic brother’s on 77th St. are competing in.

Hononegah +21. The Mustangs can stay under most fans’ radars for another week. From a St. Rita tweet that featured all 4 RBs, I assume all 4 are ready to go. Got out of the gate slow in Geneva, we’ll see how they come out this week. While they should win, you cannot let Quarterfinal teams hang around, then the winds change and then everyone stares at everyone else. Don’t let the Indians get them to that point.

Sycamore +1 Here is another toss up like the BR/MC clash. One score difference type of game. Just hard to win on the road in these toss ups. But Go Rocks

Naz +8 Like another poster said, it’s no indictment on Fenwick to take Nazareth and the points. BR/MC may have the most dramatic game this weekend but Naz/Fen will be the most exciting if that makes any sense.

GK +30. The games begin to get slightly tighter for the Hilltoppers starting this week

Good Luck and good health to all the teams competing this week. Great seasons for all boys, play your hearts out. And fans, especially adults, stay off the field. The sun rises on Sunday either way, deep breath.

Well, it's obvious that you're all anxiously awaiting my picks for the week.
LWE +28 - the flaw in Gambletron's algorithm has clearly been exposed.
M -14 - Lake Avenue is now postseason football boulevard.
BR +1 - Should be a sober affair.
Hononegah +21 - Princess Hononegah was 15 when she married Stephen Mack (31), nine children followed.
Pats -1 over Not Bishop Sycamore.
F -8 over the Ghost of JJ McCarthy.
JC -30 over GK.

Quarterfinals! With the exception of a couple of matchups, I never thought they'd look like this.

LWE @ LA
neutral field
[2021] Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL) 35, [2021] Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, IL) 7

M @ GBS
neutral field
[2021] Marist (Chicago, IL) 28, [2021] Glenbrook South (Glenview, IL) 14

MC @ BR
neutral field
[2021] Mount Carmel (Chicago, IL) 31, [2021] Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) 30

Hononegah @ SR
neutral field
[2021] St. Rita (Chicago, IL) 35, [2021] Hononegah (Rockton, IL) 14

SP @ Sycamore
neutral field
[2021] St. Patrick (Chicago, IL) 22, [2021] Sycamore (IL) 21

F @ Naz
neutral field
[2021] Fenwick (Oak Park, IL) 28, [2021] Nazareth Academy (LaGrange Park, IL) 20

Genoa Kingston @ JC
neutral field
[2021] Joliet Catholic Academy (Joliet, IL) 42, [2021] Genoa-Kingston (Genoa, IL) 12
LWE @ LA
LA wins but take the points.

M @ GBS
Marist wins but take the points

MC @ BR
BR is the favorite at home. But it’s really hard to beat a good team twice in the CCL.

Hononegah @ SR
SR should win but take the points. SR respects Hononegah’s 11 wins even if most posters don’t.

SP @ Sycamore
St. Pats wins in a close one. Strength of schedule puts Pat’s over the top in the 2nd half.

Fenwick @ Naz
Fenwick wins. Coin flip in this one. Fenwick wins if it’s not a shootout.

Genoa Kingston @ JC
JCA wins at home and covers the points.

Good luck to everyone again this week!

LA over LWE - LA in the express lanes on the Edens

Marist over GBS - should be workman like win

MC over BR in an upset. The higher the score the better the chance BR wins

SR over Hononegah - how many touches does Brown get

SP over Sycamore - Pat’s peaking at right time

Fenwick over Naz - Friars have to keep the scoring down.

JC over Genoa Kingston - JCA should have renewed the contract with SR. But they did get a quality win over BR.
