Always good to be back at Leonard Stadium.
Was pretty impressed with the turnout for this Monday early afternoon camp. SIU had around 100 kids or so and the talent level was pretty solid which also included a decent amount of OOS kids as well.
Here are some names who stood out (again no rosters available)
RB Jace Franklin Williamsville- very well put together kid has bette than I expected size (5-foot-9, 180 ish pounds) and Franklin also has some high level RB traits and tools. Franklin runs hard, maintains good lean and pad level and has very good feet. Franklin also is a downhill type of runner who gets up to speed quickly. Franklin also showed good hands and overall was solid. The kid carries himself very well on and off the field and I can see him at the FCS level next fall.
RB Justin Daubaris Danville- 2017 kid I didn't know about until this camp. Physically very comparable to Franklin except Justin might have an inch plus on Franklin. I was impressed with Daubaris overall athletic skills. He runs with very good speed, looked great in positional drills and showed good hands, ball skills and just made plays in one on ones.
WR/DB D'ante Cox Rochester and WR/DB Avanti Cox Rochester- been aware of these two for awhile now. Seemed to both struggle early on in testing phase and drills but lit up once one and ones started. D'anti is a big taller and longer than Avanti yet both are speed guys with terrific athletic abilities and also both have great ball skills. I can see both kids getting more looks this late summer and early fall. Both can also play DB and D'anti seemed to be more comfortable at times on the defensive end.
QB Tyler Ward Plano- Seen Tyler multiple times now. Throws it as well as anyone here and is always in the Top 2-3 QB's...only difference is Tyler unfortunately is 2-3 inches under the other two kids at QB and well you know the rest. Kid will no question get money to play football at the next level.
OG Jacob Roth Auburn- small school kid with some real upside. Was my OL MVP from a pretty strong group overall. Roth has good size (6-foot-4/270 pounds) and will add more size and strength at the college level. Moves very well is fluid and no question will draw more looks. I see Roth as a MVC FCS level kid.
WR/DB Gavin Webb Springfield SE- speedy as heck. Runs hard has moves and wiggle and just goes out and competes hard. Is a bit undersized for say the BCS level yet I feel Webb would be a great cover corner type in the FCS. Webb could also be a potential kick returner type and is a kid who just wants it bad. Love that.
WR Israel Adeoti Planno- has very good speed and hands but just is a bit thin and undersized for say the FCS level. Again another Plano kid who goes hard and makes plays and competes. Like Plano QB Ward this kid will also find a home next fall and get $$$ to play.
The SHG Offensive Line- Ok that's sorta vague but in all seriousness one D2 coach said "I'd take the whole line with me if I could." The SHG offensive line for 2016 will be big...really big. My guess is the starting SHG OL will average 260-270 pounds per man and these kids aren't a stubby 260-270 per man either. I liked all five on some level to be honest but for me I liked what I saw from John Burgett (6-foot-4, 300 pounds) in particular here.
QB Tim Brenneisen SHG- has good height (6-foot-2 ish) and throws a good ball. Is mechanically sound and also seems more and more comfortable when I see him. Is still a bit thin with a narrow frame but no question is primed for a big 2016 senior season. I fully expect a 2,000-2,500 yards season from Benneisen this fall.
OL Jamal Charles Jacksonville- 2018 kid with good strength and quickness. Did well ion one on ones and I would actually like to see him more as a DT. Charles is more on an interior OL or DT type and is a name to watch this fall.
WR James White Jacksonville- also needed a bit of a warmup to get going but once the one on one portion started White showed his worth. White has good speed and also was able to outfight some defenders for the football in traffic. Is a bit thin bit has the frame and length to add more weight and bulk at the college level.
