Welcome to the Playoffs! Congrats to @3OrangeWhips on his stunning, masterful performance this past season. Going 6 of 10 and 5 of 11 the final two weeks, yet still winning the regular season crown. I bet he drives on E until he gets to Indiana.
The reward for the Belleville East Lancers after a 71-0 beatdown of Granite City is a five-and-a-half hour trip to Wilmette on a Friday. Road gets a bit steeper.
Question for quidnuncs: Wasn't Harlem HS in Loves Park at one time? I recall "Loves Park Harlem" making a run in the baseball playoffs years ago.

Only 1 of these games really intrigues me, and that's Rice at Fenwick. I've watched both of these teams play this year and I must be missing something. How is this only a 1 score game? Am I missing something? I think BR dominates this one. Rice by 28.

Always love the week 1 playoff thread. So many CCL teams in the playoffs. It's a beautiful sight. Let's hope this thread stays with 3+ games right on through championship week!

BR -7 vs Fenwick. Tough week 1 draw for the Friars. There's quite a few 7A single-digit seeds they'd rather be playing. But that's life. BR has a squad that can make a run, but it won't be easy with teams like DGN and Batavia in their very near future. Crusaders 31-17.

Harlem +58 vs MC. Crazy spread for a playoff game. Caravan will score early and often but will take foot off the gas long before they are up 58. Caravan 49-7.

Belleville +39 vs LA. Loyola's defense looks primed to make a run at another state title. Steady improvement throughout the year--that's good coaching. Ramblers 35-7.

Guilford +52 vs Rita. Again, way too big of a spread for a playoff game. Like LA, Rita will ride their defense a long way. All the way to the semis vs MC! Mustangs 45-7.

Payton +62 vs Naz. These spreads.... Although more warranted here given Nazareth's ability to score at will and a CPS opponent. Naz the favorite to win 5A? Roadrunners 56-6.

Sterling +42 vs Francis. St. Francis has wins over two very legitimate title contenders (three, if you count DePaul). And a loss to a team that missed out on the state playoffs. However, I think it's safe to say that if Naz is the 5A favorite, WSF is #2. Tough matchup vs Prairie Ridge looms next week. WSF 49-14.

GBS +28 vs Marist. I think the Titans can keep this game competitive for a few quarters. Ultimately, Marist will wear them down, setting up a CCL showdown vs Loyola next week. Marist 35-14.

Jacksonville +45 vs JCA. Is it too much CCL bias to say that if Naz is the 5A favorite and WSF is #2, then JCA is #3? Because that's what I think... Hilltoppers 42-6.

DePaul -52 vs Dyett. I know I said 50+ is too much for a playoff game. But I can't see this one being remotely close, even with DePaul's 3rd and 4th stringers in there. Rams should cruise to quarterfinals with their easy quad. DePaul 56-0.

Benet -45 vs Perspectives. Didn't Anthony Davis go to Perspectives? Redwings 49-0.

Marmion +38 vs Rochelle. Cadets haven't really beaten anyone. Rochelle only beat Marian Catholic by 25 last week. That's what I am going off of here. Hubs 45-14.

R-B +8 vs StL. Vikings are the opposite of DePaul...a somewhat stacked quad. Facing a tough R-B team to set up a likely date with a very good Wheaton Academy team. This one depends on StL's health. Vikings 24-21.

North Lawndale +62 vs Montini. Can we fast forward to next week's Byron/Montini state championship? I think I'll head out to Lombard for it. Broncos rest starters after taking a 28-0 1q lead this week. Broncos 56-0.

Huge spreads this week.

DP @ Dyett
DP -52, DePaul has impressed me.

Payton @ Naz

Payton runs possibly the slowest offense I have ever seen. After each play, the QB jogs over to the sideline, conferences with the HC, and the returns to the huddle. They line up, and typically run some motion/shift/check at the LOS. I have been dumbfounded as to how they have not racked up delay of game penalties this season, but I don't think they had a single one at the Lane game (only one I saw live).

Their most lopsided game this year was a 27-0 loss to Kenwood. I think Naz will absolutely score at will on Payton and shut them out, but with the way they run their offense I think it will be hard for any team to hang 40+ on them.

Brother Rice 23 Fenwick 21 (+7): GOTW!!! A TERRIBLE matchup for 2 really good teams, but sometimes, breaks can be tough in life. I can see this game being won at the buzzer with a score. In the end, I just think BR's top tier depth just eeks them across the finish line.

Mount Carmel 56 Harlem 0 (+58): The Caravan will be getting their starters out ASAP. What a nice break for them to have this matchup

Loyola 49 (-42) Belleville East 0: The Ramblers seem to be finding a stride

Saint Rita 42 Guilford 0 (+52): Like the Caravan, the Ponies will pull their starters ASAP.

Nazareth 63 (-62) Payton 0: I can't believe I'm taking 62, but Payton probably does not have one player that would start for Naz and may not have very many that would be second stringers

Saint Francis 56 (-42) Sterling 10: Sterling gets a rematch against the Spartans who ended their hopes and dreams last year. Those same hopes and dreams will end the same way this year.

Marist (-28) 42 Glenbrook South 7: GBS played a strong schedule and hung in there closely with Maine South, but Marist is a different beast.

Joliet Catholic 42 Jacksonville 0 (+45): A random question: Has JCA played the most different opponents in the playoffs compared to everyone else? They seem to have covered this whole state ten times over

DePaul 55 (-52) Dyett 0: This may be the half time score

Benet 49 (-45) Perspectives/Leadership 0: Another game where this may be the half time score

Rochelle 41 Marmion 14 (+38): The one non conference loss for the conference takes place here. Marmion should just be happy to be able to print playoff hoodies and t shirts.

Saint Laurence 34 (-8) Richmond Burton 24: Larry's just waiting in the weeds. Something tells me that they will be around for a few weeks

Montini 56 North Lawndale Charter 0 (+62): Just get me to next week. We all know Byron is fuming that Montini has an easier matchup than they do

Some great Day 1 energy and action.

Pro poster tip: if someone retorts or you get under some skin with a comment, never respond with clarity or apologies. Let the original comment stand, let it fester like a brain worm or infestation, like an untreated open wound with flies around it. So much funner that way. The CCL/ESCC thread is the big leagues with big boy pants. Even the lovely women that post here have worn hand me down Sears toughskin jeans growing up and/or have been thrown out of corner taverns for throwing hands and still finish the night off with a steak burrito the size of their head.

BR @ F
I'm told that Crusader fans will be ushered into a separate gate and be required to sit in Triton's visitor stands. Friars.
MC @ Harlem
Huskies can beat the spread.
Belleville @ LA
Both teams lost to ESL, so it's basically even, Ramblers might get lucky and win. Lancers cover.
Guilford @ SR
Cheap Trick vs The Doors. I see the Vikings covering.
Payton @ Naz
Normally I'd say 62 is too much to cover, especially considering the running clock. Roadrunners.
Sterling @ SF
If Sterling was exhausted with Montini, they're not going to like SF any better. Golden Warriors.
GBS @ Marist
'Skins.
Jacksonville @ JC
Absolutely no read on this. Big grassy field next to a corn field. Should slow them down a bit, maybe windy. Crimsons.
DP @ Dyett
How are these two in the same class? Dyett has been closed, reopened as a green technology, closed, hunger strike, reopened as an arts academy ... good grief. Congrats to the coach that keeps it all together. Eagles.
Perspectives/Leadership [Coop] @ BA
I hope the kids enjoy their trip to DuPage. Redwings.
MA @ Rochelle
I think the Cadets can hang with them. Cadets.
SL @ Richmond Burton
The best thing about the playoffs is the travel - the kids get to see teams and locations they'd never otherwise visit. Vikes.
MCHS @ North Lawndale Charter
NLCP is a bball powerhouse. Unfortunately, they're going to get stomped, but I'm guessing they'll cover because 62 is really unsporting.

Looks like Dyett is the second-smallest team in the class (by 1) with 554. Depaul the third largest at 833

Sheesh. Obviously 833 is their football enrollment (trailing 2y average). They have really blown up.

Dyett down to 504 per latest CPS website figure.

This ^^ is exactly why I made the comment in a recent, separate thread that DePaul will enjoy 7A/8A soon, should they have playoff success in football.

You can’t be mid-1,300 total enrollment along with a potential multiplier and stay in 4A/5A. Sorry.

They will enjoy the ranks of 7A/8A I’m sure.
Actually, I have it in good authority that administration wants to cap enrollment at numbers that will keep DP football between 4A and 5A. It'll be all about campus expansion. It will take more funds and endowment to grow their infrastructure.... But what do I know? I'm just a parent!! 🤷‍♂️

My guess would be probably. There are only a handful of programs with enough playoff games go be in that conversation, so I am sure JC is in the top 3-5 of unique opponents played in the playoffs, if not number 1 overall.

Joliet Catholic actually traveled to Jacksonville for a semifinal game in 2004. It was a fun atmosphere and a competitive game most of the way until JC pulled away late.
