MC 35 Hilltoppers 21 FINAL nm

The Refs took over the 2nd half. NICE,
C'mon. MC had way more flags thrown on them. I believe it was 3rd and 30 after back to back MC penalties when Elliott threw that TD. Was it not a penalty when that player body slammed Elliott for the personal foul well after the whistle. Elliott had a TD taken away for going over the line on a TD throw.....it really went both ways.

Clearly, the better team won.
Elliot is the real deal and has a solid supporting cast.
It would have taken a near error free game to beat the Caravan.
With a few exceptions, winning the time of possession battle seemed to work well.
IMO, the game turned on the first possession of the 2nd Half:
  • A kickoff return to near the 40-yardline was wiped out (maybe aided by) a holding penalty that had them start their drive at about the 10-yardline
  • Going 3-and-Out
  • In that sequence, they looked lethargic & flat, rather than a fired up team coming out of the break
Down 28-14 with plenty of time left, the boys marched down the field and seemed to gain some rhythm, only to stall inside the 5-yardline.
The inability to defend the long ball still seems to be an issue.
On the 2nd nail in the coffin TD, the Hilltoppers attempted to cover the 3 MC receivers on the left side with 2 defenders and no Safety on top, which resulted in a Elliott throw to the 1-yardline where no defender was within 20 yards of the Receiver, who then literally just tiptoed into the End Zone after catching the ball.
Too fatigued to be thinking clearly, I guess.
The boys had their chances, twice inside the 5-yardline and getting 0 points with some interesting, head scratching play choices on the 4th Downs.
With two weeks until their next game, the Hilltoppers and the coaching staff have a lot to ponder and determine how they want to finish the year.
I wish them well and hope the boys and the staff get it together and can stay crisp for 48 minutes.

I would really incorporate the pass in a bit more. I know it's not JCA's M.O. but they have some real nice WR's (#3 in particular) and they were open, the QB just missed the throw. They have some great RB's as always, hard hitting! But the passing game can be there too if needed.

Agreed, It's all in the playbook, as 2017 revealed. It would probably surprise you how far it has come this year. The game strategy was to control the clock and limit the chances for quick strike Mount Carmel offense. It seemed to be working. Up 14-7 at Half and having moved the ball well on the ground, I have no doubt that was what was to continue in the 2nd Half (aiming for a 6 minute scoring drive and a 21-7 lead), but that disastrous start and shift in the momentum happened. And then BOOM! The Hilltoppers would not have won a shoot out with your boys. I get why Jaws took the approach that he did as given the match ups, it gave him the best chance of winning. A shoot out would have been much more lopsided.
With Elliott healing more, I see Mount Carmel as a clear post season favorite.
Good luck to your boys and hopes that they avoid injuries the rest of the way.

You guys will get W #5 next week and be playoff eligible and I would put you as the favorites over PC for a solid 6-3 season and I think you will make a lot of noise in 5A again. I was impressed with #99 on defense.

JC brought the normal LT over to play RG all game. That’s a BIG right side. Was that only for this game due to MC’s size or will it be like this for the remainder? What happened to the old center - did he get injured?

Good game by both squads. #5 on MC has some wheels and #80 as a FR has a bright future.

Their starting center did get injured in the ND game.

It's always a thrill to play JCA, who made me so nervous at the half that I had to pour another beer.
