ICE State Final (AKA 2A Wilmo vs Nashville)

I think almost everyone was wrong about this one, the defenses are who ruled the day. Wilmington only gave up 7 obviously and Nashville only allowed one sizeable drive for points. And it was a far closer game than many predicted. Congrats to both teams for being there

Congrats to Wilmington, well earned, their defense was the difference in the game, keeping Nashville from getting any tempo by not being able to run the ball. If you had said Wilmington would score 24 I would have liked Nashville's chances but they totally shut down Nashville. Well earned title!

How's that humble pie taste, asking for a friend?!

Can you please share the top secret formula that was going to shut the cats down? Not being a dick.....legitimately asking?
And I will admit......Much closer than I thought. Great game played by both teams. Wish they could have qualified in 3A just to see.........Talked to a few of the '14 cats last week and they were already talking about the 2-3A difference......

Nashville used to run the Double Wing, I think you already knew that. They ran it very well in the early 2000's, making state in 2004 losing in the semi finals. The QB that year was the Southern Illinois player of the year and now defensive coordinator of Nashville. I thought if anyone could teach a team in a week how to stop it better than most, it was him. I think it helped ,but obviously not enough.

Maybe now is not the time, but I think we touched on this earlier. Could Wilmo compete with the 3A teams? Absolutely. Would they steamroll to the title game like they did in 2A? Highly doubtful. Reed-Custer was same level as 3A champ Byron, but as tough as Nashville played, R-C was the best team Wilmo faced this year.

Nashville did a good job with it, but these kids have been on a roll since the Reed-Custer game. Nashville O let them down early and once Wilmington got settled in, it was a team grind out. Reents I think is underrated as a defensive coach. He’s generally pretty aggressive but he made some adjustments for #4.

When I say Reents underrated, I mean that he is the head coach, but also the defensive coordinator. Maybe underrated isn’t the right term

Not sure why it was a secret lol

Talking to Wilmo fans last night they feel that they will be better the next two years... really???
Maybe not better for certain, but they return a lot of key kids and they have some really good sophomores that will be moving up. Many of them got a bunch of playoff experience with a couple of the lopsided games Wilmo had.

They did a good job of stopping the big run but other than a play here or there Wilmington pretty much had they way in the run game. Wilmo tried a few counters and even a pass but Nashville was all over it but they could not stop the toss dive play.

Nashville's best offensive plays, other than the missed coverage, was pass interference for underthrown balls. It looked like the Wildcats we're a step ahead on defense the whole game.

The officiating was a bit questionable. The pass to the sideline was a very close call, the kid may have caught it but it was super close. A few questionable holding calls and a few false starts where I didn't see any movement as well. The worst no call was on the taunting penalty where the Nashville was right in the face of Wilmos QB and the ref was looking right at it.

But when all is said and done this game proved that if you cannot run the ball you have little to no chance to win.
