It's deep into the off season, so I hope Edgy will allow this. I have to throw out a congrats to the JCA basketball team. Beat Phillips last night 63-61 to advance to the sectional championship for only the 3rd time in the last 35 years. On a personal note, it has been extra special watching my fifth and final kid at JCA play with this team.

March Madness in Illinois High School Basketball is criminally underrated. I was at BR/SR last night. What a scene. What a game. And there were a few other games that were incredible last night and Tuesday with great atmospheres.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being excited about your area schools that are still alive in the IHSA playdowns.
The five teams listed from area code 618 are a combined 17-0 so far in the boys hoops tourney.
As for the rest of the story ... those five teams that are a combined 17-0 so far in the postseason, happen to be 13-0 against other teams from the same 618 area code. And of the four wins against area codes 217 teams, Jacksonville finished 9-25, Seymour finished 18-16, and Taylorville finished 4-28. Only Quincy (26-5) is non-618 team of quality that has shown up so far to face these five 618 teams during the IHSA's March Madness.
Because hoops is bracketed 100 percent regionally rather than football, which either has the entire state as a region or half the state as a region, it's not unusual to play many playoff games against teams from the same area code. I suspect some fan of teams in the 847 area code can make a similar claim to the one above. The point of this is that many participants on this forum have expressed dissatisfaction with 10-team, closed conferences in football, suggesting that teams can be over-rated or under-rated because they never can play an opponent from another area in the postseason. In boys hoops, In the IHSA playdowns, you run into a situation in which (and I am just picking a team here) let's say Libertyville from Lake County has no chance of squaring off against O'Fallon from near St. Louis until/unless both teams advance to the Final Four at the U. of I. This March Madnesss, Libertyville (847 area code) is 3-0 against teams from the 847 area code and will play 847 Prospect on Friday, and if it wins that game,Libertyville will play either 847 New Trier or 847 Glenbrook North in the Round of 8.

HC Sectional Championship between HC and DGN sold out this morning in 3 minutes.
I thought it sold out last night. At least that is what my son told me. Should be a great game and atmosphere. Teams split their previous two meetings. HC was the last team to beat DGN and the Red Devils havent lost a game since last year.

All..... Defending 3A champion SHG (30-3) has a big one Friday against Decatur MacArthur. (28-4) The Cyclones have beaten the Generals twice this season in CS8 play. But the sectional final is at MacArthur. SHG is a three point favorite which means it is anyone's game.

Three starters for the Cycs played on the 4A championship football team and a fourth is their sixth guy off the bench. Ratsy

#24 (MM) was a beast.

Good JC team that winter - I believe Carmel Catholic got them at home (Mundelein) in a ridiculously low scoring game with a last-second winner (29-28 or something similar final score).

Since we are talking hoops, it should be mentioned that the morons at the IHSA canceled the 3 point contest because they couldn’t handle the logistics with four classes down there. I could get a team of monkeys together and put this on. The IHSA is a joke. All they do is dictate to schools what they want done. Then come up with rule proposals that no one asks for. Then “run” playoffs by having free labor at schools host and collect money for them, all with the goal of having “statewide representation” instead of having the best teams play each other at the end. Any proposals by schools to leave the IHSA, let me know, I will help carry the flag.

618 schools in the Sweet 16
CLASS 1A Gibault Catholic (28-7)
CLASS 2A Breese Central (29-4)
CLASS 3A East St. Louis (23-5) Triad (28-6)
CLASS 4A O'Fallon (25-7)

A Tuesday night in the SW conference is dangerous!
We need Breese Central to make it to the State Tourney. They have a kid named Dickshot and I want the announcers to say his name over and over!

Breese must be the real deal - two losses on back to back nights in December. First game against Briarchrest Christian in Tennessee at 9:00 AM and then the next night against Mascoutah on the road.

They handled Troy Triad by 8 on the road. Triad does not have any great wins and lost handily to Collinsville, which swept ESL this year. The other ESL losses were to big-time teams, including O'Fallon twice, Father Tolton, Vashon and Staley - some of the top MO teams.

O'Fallon has losses to East and West, Edwardsville and Collinsville. In December, they lost to MacArthur and Lincoln.

They released tickets on Wednesday night for families and students - those sold out immediately. Then they released 700 for general admission - those were gone in 3 minutes. The gym holds 4200.

HC has won 23 straight games, with the last loss on December 17th. The 1st DGN game is the only conference loss for the Red Devils this year.

Two team with 3 loses each - tonight will be another great atmosphere.

Troy has not played Collinsville. The only difference in their common opponents is Centralia, Troy couldn’t close out that fourth quarter and East Side did. East Side has ended Troy’s last two postseasons and those games weren’t particularly close.

Breese would be my pick of the 618 teams, certainly the most battle tested when you look at the bracket they’ve already gone through. Also the highest rated 618 team in their respective AP poll.

O’Fallon has their work cut out for them with Moline. Moline has a lot more star power in their lineup.

Pulling for the Byron girls tonight. The daughter of a good friend and old college roommate starts for them.

All.... Last night SHG 75 MacArthur 62 and ESL 53 Troy 38. These two will play in the super sectional Monday at the BOS Center in Springfield.

The Cyclones and the Flyers were scheduled earlier in the season for a non con game but ESL found a different opponent and the game didn't happen. Should be a fun one with a ton of speed running the floor on both sides. Ratsy

A rematch of last year’s super sectional that was close throughout before SHG pulled away a bit in the 4th Quarter and won by 10. There is also still the possibility of SHG and Metamora meeting again at state, though it looks like it would be in the semi’s this year.

All.... Yes indeed. It sounds like the Flyer faithful are looking forward to this game. (.55 of the video) :) Ratsy

Went to Perspectives/DePaul Prep game. Prosepectives started to take control in the second half. Led by 10 points with 2 minutes. Could not close it out. Called a time out they did not have with a tie score and 15 seconds left. DePaul hit the technical free throws and scored on ensuing possession and won the game by 4. Very tough way to lose for Perspectives. Game seemed to be in hand.

All..... Flyers superior height advantage getting them a bucket full of offensive rebounds was huge keeping them in the game. And it sure didn't hurt Rucker getting that hurried shot late to extend the game. Ratsy

Interesting take. The game was never in danger of being out of reach for either team. Playing extremely hard kept both teams in the game. Great competitive game.

DGN was very impressive in dismantling Kenwood. Jumped out to a 20 point lead early and were never threatened. Ended up winning by 20. Can't imagine many saw that coming.

I think the largest lead for either team was 8 for SHG
