Harry Caray Calls Cubs World Series Win

Harry Caray was a mean, miserable drunk who made fun of Cub fans for decades.

During the late 60s, my Air Force buddies listened to him on the Cardinals network He loved to badmouth the Cubs organization and its fans. In late '69, he was ion heaven as the Cubs blew the pennant to the Mets.

When he worked for the White Sox, he made lots of nasty cracks about the northsiders, as well. He didn't find them fascinating until the Cubs hired him.

So bitter. So very sad.

Yes it is sad Newt. But it won't change.

Personally, I liked Harry Caray. I had a chance to meet him a couple of times and a nicer more gracious person would be hard to find. I liked his broadcasts as well. I never heard him bad mouthing Cub fans or any fans for that matter. Not saying it never happened, but I never heard it.

I do think he was at his worst when he was teamed up with Jimmy Piersall. Those two were absolutely brutal and I was glad when they dissolved that relationship. I don't know if Harry Caray said anything worse than Piersall did when he called the White Sox' wives a "bunch of horny broads." Can you imagine an announcer saying that now?

While I think Piersall was terrible he was entertaining because you just never knew what he was going to say. He was far too critical. His criticism of players, etc. made Joe Morgan look like a choir boy.

It should be pointed out that Harry Caray left the White Sox because of Reinsdorf. Caray always said he didn't like Reinsdorf and he didn't trust him. That says it all.

When Harry announced for the Sox, Sox fans loved the guy. When he went to the Cubs, many of the same fans hated him. Yeah, he drank and drank and drank. But it never hindered his performance and he didn't miss games or show up late because of it. The only knock I have on him is that he hung on too long and his descriptions of the game suffered. But I liked the guy. How could you not?

Sure as God made green apples...

The miserable few who continually try and bring down the positive energy are only making themselves look like the miserable old bitches they are. MC63 doesn't have a horse in the race so his energy is being spent trying to bad mouth and bring down everyone else.

I would swear it's IG88.... that's the last time I recall anyone being as much of a Jag..
Oh wait, privateparts qualifies as well.

Privateparts...that's a good one. Which grammar school are you currently attending?

It seems that anyone who disagrees with you is a jag. You can't take a joke.

Cubs fans need to realize that not everyone loves the Cubs. Just because I live in this city doesn't mean that I have to. There were actually articles on how the Cubs WS win was going to "bring the city back" and turn things around economically. What a crock. Now, go to your Yoga class and try to recapture some of your "positive energy".

I nor anyone else could give a rip if you like the Cubs... obviously you or your buddies were not missed at any of the celebrations.

Not liking them is one thing.... going out of your way to mouth off is another. Hence, you're a "JAG"

Jokes about special needs... JAG

Can you link to these articles? I'd be interested to see the reasoning in them.

I don't have any buddies. My wife wont let me.

I made a joke, Francis. Lighten up.

I did not make a joke about Special Needs. I have a special needs stepson. I made a joke about Cubs fans, and it was A JOKE. I'm sorry you couldn't decipher the meaning.

Not true. In fact the Caray/Piersall tamdem was the best set of announcers in the history of Chicago sports television.

That isn't a fact it's your opinion. The best tandem of announcers in Chicago history, in MY opinion, exists right now with Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk doing the Hawks games. As far as Chicago baseball goes, I think the best were Don Drysdale and Hawk Harrelson. That was when Hawk wasn't full of himself and I really liked Drysdale. In thinking about it further I'd put Harry Caray and Steve Stone equal to Drysdale and Hawk. Caray and Stone were outstanding.

Len and JD are pretty darn good on TV, especially Len.
IMO, they have that unique ability to talk about subjects other than the game at hand without totally diverting from the game. In 162 game season you have to do that from time to time. Len also does a very good job at using advanced statistics without over doing it.

Len Kasper is the featured speaker at the JCA Alumni Banquet on Thursday. Looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

In the early 1970's (White Sox era), Harry did commercials for "Chicken Unlimited". They used to supply him with fried chicken in the booth and he would eat it on the air (smacking his lips as he talked). It sounded so irresistibly good that I wanted to run out to buy a box of chicken. He constantly plugged Chicken Unlimited on the air. Years later, Budweiser was getting killed in Chicago beer sales until they hired him as a pitch man. The man was a natural marketeer.

No not everyone is a Cubs fan but there were 5 million fans at the celebration parade. The 7th largest gathering in the world & the largest ever in the USA. I am sure Cubs fans everywhere don't care that your not one of them.

Yes sir NNFAN. I used to laugh when he would do an on camera commercial during the game for Chicken Unlimited and take a bite out of a piece, then start talking again and spit bits of the chicken out. Hilarious. Chicken Unlimited and Falstaff. Good times.

Pat Hughes puts me to sleep, sad that a true Chicago soutsider like Coomer is stuck with him. Kasper with Brenly was the best.

I remember when he was doing a Sox game and a foul ball almost hit his wife. He says "wow, she almost got creamed".

All the Cub television announcers since Caray left put me to sleep.

In fact one inning of baseball puts me to sleep now.

They need to speed up that game (pitch clock, no stepping out of batters box, no play reviews, etc) It's like watching paint dry.

Wassup, you have it all wrong. None of these things will do a thing to make games any faster on a measurable basis. Guys have always stepped out of the box in-between pitches. Reviews do add some time, so I agree there. Pitch clock doesn't matter, almost all pitchers stay within a reasonable time between pitches. No battery takes longer to pitch to guys than Britt Burns and Carlton Fisk did.

The number one thing slowing games down is all the mound visits and pitching changes. You see an average of six pitchers, maybe more in every single game. Look at all the box scores next season and you will see that fact. Why can't everyone see the obvious answer here?

Whatever it takes because I have not been interested in baseball for years.

I do agree with that. I really have a problem with games going in excess of three and a half hours. But I still watch the game. Watching the Red Sox play the Yankees is murder and those games go 4 hours sometimes.

Corey you will have to back off the 5,000,000 number. Reports are coming out that say it was nowhere near 5 million. Not even 2 million.

I was skeptical about 5,000,000 because I don't think folks realize how many people that is in one place.

But, either way, that's whole bunch of people.

How could I forget the Falstaff! We are old!
I sure as hell don't feel old and that is a key. But, I'd rather be old and have had the chance to live in those times than to be young now.

People now can't even imagine a play-by-play guy drinking a cold beer during the broadcast... and saying so! Imagine the outcry. You would hear things like "what about the children?"

Well, we adjusted just fine to it all and we were kids when Harry was doing his crazy stuff. He really mellowed with the Cubs.

People are far too uptight now and simply don't know how to have a good time.
