Did something happen in Gurnee?

This was in the North Suburban Conference thread I missed it. I just thought there’d be more noise about this one.

🎢😪 take the heat. If there is such thing has a good loss ... I think this is. This will get them refocused going into playoffs. They had a tough 5 game stretch. On to the next opponent. The flag is still rolling 🎢🙏🏾💪🏾
I love your passion Micah. I’m honestly surprised by this score. I thought you guys were going to run the table in the regular season. I agree with you on the no good loss but sometimes teams need to realize they can’t just show up and win.

This is the craziness of football and why it’s a great sport. I had the great luxury of coaching Coach McNulty. I have the greatest amount of respect for he and his incredible program…. And I also have the same amount of respect for Coach Planz and Lake Zurich.

After seeing Lake Zurich lose to STN in week 2, there was no way was this was going to happen tonight.

This is the 1 time out of 10 that LZ could do this. Warren wins the other 9!

Nice work Coach Planz! Also, I would hate to be next on Coach McNultys schedule. Yikes! You couldn’t play for two better coaches!

you see…. This is exactly why the football isn’t round!

Respectfully I disagree that Warren wins 9 out of 10.

This isn’t the same Warren team we have seen the last few years. They don’t dominate the line of scrimmage. Their LBs aren’t dominant. Their offense is 1 dimensional. Warren is very good due to their DBs and overall speed, blitz packages and attacking D but they are giving up far more points than usual. They have given up as many points this year in 5 games as they did in their previous 2 seasons (17 games) combined.

They have more kids going both ways than in the past and that tires them out.

Warren is the best team in the NSC though LZ will be the conference champ. LZ would beat them multiple times out of 10. Warren didn’t dominate Stevenson the week before. If a couple things had gone differently they could have lost that one though they were certainly the better team.

Unless Warren can find a passing game to compliment Thompson, I don’t see them going very far in the playoffs. A well coached playoff team will score 20+ points against them.

This is not anything close to the teams they HS head in the past. Light years from the ‘19 and ‘18 teams. Even the Covid year team was better.

This still comes back to discipline. And the lack there of. Another player got ejected last night with two unsportsmanlike fouls.

How do these kids think this will play at the next level? Answer, it won’t.

It’s really disappointing because this is a good coaching staff and an extremely talented team.

I heard this quote from a college coach one time and it seems appropriate “if you have to keep telling people how good you are, You aren’t.”

Warren slept walked through the first half and LZ came out ready to play. Exploited the edges and the LBs, especially with Warren missing an important blitzer/edge rusher this game. Also the offense reverted back to previous years with a stubburn determination to pound the ball between the tackles at all cost even though every time warren tried to hit the edges it was successful. Warren looked more like themselves the 2nd half and had the ball down 3 with 4 mns left on the LZ 45 but kind of insanely chose to run up the gut 3 plays in a row against a full box, even after there was a 10-15 mn break after 1st down due to injury. They had 10 mns to come up with a strategy and chose to do the thing that hadnt worked all night long. As one that knows how hard in game playcalling is and thus usually doesnt fuss about it, I have to say that played a huge part in them losing. But losing can and should humble teams and the ones with grit learn from it and get better and I know that Warren could use some humbling and a reminder than winning often comes down to preparation and doing the little things and if they want to win state they have to get back to that. And hopefully the staff oushes themselves out of the conservative stranglehold that has frankly capped their potential for a few years now. Overall though LZ took it to them and definitely earned that W. They had guys hurt almost every other snap in the 2nd half and still gutted that one out

Hope you’re right that this provides a dose of humility. Problem is they won’t be challenged the next 4 weeks. We shall see

Id disagree because once Warren woke up they were clearly the better team, theyd just dug themselves into a big hole. LZ scored once on a drive longer than 40 yds so as bad as Warren played LZ wasnt marching up and down the field on them. And Warrens 1930’s playcalling, which they hadnt reverted to all year, did more to stop their offense than the LZ defense did. There were multiple drives where they just stubbornly pounded the ball inside against 9 man boxes all game as if the coaches were trying to prove a point or something. This was the least motivated, most poorly played and coached game Ive seen from Warren in years, and they still had a great chance to win late. Again props to LZ but theres little chance they beat a Warren team that was prepared and focused. And thats absolutely a part of football, but its still more about Warren playing far below their capabilities than LZ matching them. Idk if this was an A game from LZ but I do know it was at best a C- game from Warren. And it happens with overconfident teenagers during homecoming week I guess

I can say factually that after the Maine South game a number of their kids thought they wouldnt be challenged again until the playoffs. Humble pie is bitter but filling lol

I guess that is one way to look at it. On the flip side one could say LZ played a C+ game in the first half and took Warren’s will and then slept through the 2nd half to allow Warren to make it respectable. Despite sleeping in the 2nd half LZ still won.

The truth is that LZ won the game because they were the better team last night.

Warren ran the same offense the week before against Stevenson. The game was 14-10 at half and Warren didn’t attempt a pass in the 2nd half while moving the ball better. Maybe they tried to replicate that strategy last night and it didn’t work. Or maybe the coaches know that their WRs are also their DBs and don’t want to tire them out. Or maybe their coach doesn’t believe in their pass game.

LZ was down players last night due to injuries and still won the game. It’s a full game. Not a half.

I would bet the money line on Warren every week in conference but if they played everyone in the league 10 times, LZ, Stevenson and possibly Libertyville would win games.

They are the best team in the league but don’t confuse them with their teams from the last few years who wouldn’t lose a conference game if they played each team 100 times.

For all the guys they want to say Warren isn't that good or undisciplined, etc. I wish people stop comparing this Warren team to other teams. Each team is different with strength & weaknesses. Warren is still one of the top 8A schools in Illinois whether you like them are not. One loss in the middle of the season does not make the entire season. Great win for LZ. Time to move on. I still am I huge Warren fan because the program McNulty has built. It is not a private school where you can recruit. Your talent will vary from year to year. So the program style is what makes teams successful. Warren still has the best all around athletes in NSC. Mac sends his athletes to the next level and runs a solid program. So if you are not a Mac or Warren fan that is fine. Like I said some losses are good and I think this is one of them. On to the next opponent. Time to build momentum for the playoffs. 🎢💪🏾

Not sure you want to start that discussion.

I thought I saw LZ beat Warren?
They must of been 2.5 seconds slower last night.
Sorry Micah I couldn’t resist. I know Warren is going to be fine. The program has been solid the past few years, one loss isn’t the end of the world. They need to right the ship this Friday.

It is all good. Also I think the game was fairly refereed. To me these chats or post are just fun. My life is not defined by these boards. My days of playing & coaching are over. I support the kids and parents. I pray each kid leaves the game healthy and they enjoy the competition and thier teammates. 98% of the kids are done with football after HS. However, I hope the kids that want to play at the next level have that opportunity. I love the 2.5 sec reference.... those are the fun things about these post & boards. I personally know Edgy and support him because he wants the best for all of the kids. 🎢🙏🏾💪🏾

It’s all in good fun. Honestly last night sitting with Crossbones I did see a couple questionable calls against Bolingbrook. One was fairly blatant. Their was some holding by the LWE OL but those type of calls are always going to be questionable. I did see a blatant hold by a BB DB that wasn’t called. In the end the East game was called fairly even with both teams making way to many mistakes. Warren will be in the thick of things come playoff time I am sure!

Thats all very valid. The big different is the front 7 talent isnt quite what it was. Ill admit Im a little saltier about it today lol.

Just as a follow up to the recruiting comment. Does a school the size of Warren really need to recruit? They have a larger student body comparable to most small colleges. D3 for certain.

Warren does not need to recruit but the population in the surrounding areas ...Zion, North Chicago, waukegan, Grayslake, etc are very transient. Families are moving their kids into Warren Township for high school so their kids can play for Coach McNulty. He is a good role model for those kids and has built a nice program.

Side note: keep an eye out for an athlete named Aaron Stewart over the next few years. He is a top recruit in the nation as a Freshmen in wrestling and also plays football. I hope he sticks with wrestling his future is bright.

I don’t know anyone who would call Grayslake “transient”

Actually Micah jones said if there is such a thing as a good loss this was it, perhaps calling this a good loss.
The reality is warren’s final 4 games are against the four bottom feeders in their conference.
waukegan is 0-5. Zion-Benton is 0-5. Lake Forest is 0-3 when not playing Waukegan ot Zion-Benton. Mundelein is 1-2 when not playing Waukegan or Zion-Benton.
To borrow a portion of Micah’s lineage, sometimes teams need to realize that can’t just show up and win.
But in my opinion on the devils’ next four games, they can just show up and win. I expect them to head into the 8A playoffs at 8-1 but without having successfully dealt with a real challenge in more than a month. That’s obviously not warrens fault but a function of the schedule. But I would suggest that anyone familiar with the conference knew that Warrens last real challenge this season, as in a game it needed to do more than just show up to win, was against lake Zurich and the devils failed that test against a solid 7a program. I m no football expert but I suggest that Warren may win its next 4 games by the running clock but it will be difficult to tell if they are doing it at a level they will need to play at to be in the playoff field when it reaches the final 8 or even 16.

🎢 ... Warren showcased a balanced offense and dominant defense. Mcnulty got team refocused. Warren is not dead and do have discipline. So the folks that have issues with the tean and coaches it is unfortunate. I thought about this a little .... if everyone continues to compare this team to past warren teams ... it is a good thing because that means they have a strong program. Thier young D-Line is getting better with each game. The O-Line has had injuries but the depth is showing. High School foitball is about having athletes (warren has many), winning with injuries and playing with young players. Mcnulty has did a great of playing Sophomores & JV thus he always have some number of experienced players back every year. Next opponent. Hopefully they will start to be re-elevated on Edgy rankings. They went from 5-22 with a loss to LZ - very interesting. 🎢💯💪🏾

I thought rankings didn't matter?

They do not but we have them. Still trying to understand a 17 place drop for Warren. Hopefully they will get another look by the rankers. Anyway moving on to the next game. This is why I root for Warren ... just to give them a little voice on Edgy boards. Plus those who follow off season showcases/camps know the talent Warren has. Kids/teams do have bad weeks but that should not define a programs season. There are other teams out north beside LA. 🎢💯
