Just offering up a fun anecdote regarding "Carmel" of Mundelein and "Mt. Carmel' of Chicago.
Back in the late 1990s/early 2000s, the East Suburban Catholic Conference and the Chicago Catholic League for some reason morphed into the Catholic Metro Conference with color divisions of Red, White & Blue.
The "two" Carmel schools were in the same division, and the Mundelein-based school won the regular-season matchup and the division championship, while the Chicago-based school won the rematch in the playoffs en route to winning the 2002 state championship.
Because Mundelein's Carmel was part of the Catholic Metro Conference, it was allowed at that time to participate in the Prep Bowl playoffs after it lost to Chicago's Mt. Carmel in the playoffs.
And as things turned out, Mundelein's Carmel won the Prep Bowl.
Now, for the anecdote.
Early in the week of the Prep Bowl, there was like a dinner/banquet held for the competing teams, which were Mundelein's Carmel and I believe it was Chicago Dunbar.
The year before this — 2001 — Mt. Carmel of Chicago won the Prep Bowl game, but obviously couldn't defend its title in 2002 because it was playing in the IHSA tournament.
Anyway, at the banquet, one of the Prep Bowl officials spoke and did not realize that the team representing the Catholic Metro Conference was NOT Mt. Carmel from Chicago. My memory has faded on this over the past 17 years, but I think he made a reference when speaking at the banquet to Mt. Carmel returning to the Prep Bowl to defend its championship from 2001 ... not realizing that the Carmel team in the hall was from Mundelein rather than Chicago.
Oops.
