Probably because I am watching too much college/pro FB lately, these high-stakes situations are seemingly very frequent. It appears that most offenses really need a close, off-season examination of their particular options. Even some analytics could be useful concerning success rates for variables like: QB under C or not, number of backs in the box including their horizontal/vertical alignments, personnel groupings, amount of defenders between the OTs and the like. Well-practiced "wildcat" concepts could be expanded, especially for underwhelming QB runners (see Iowa bowl game), although that could eliminate some quick-to-LOS surprise elements. Maybe the game is ready for the "next shiny object" for these situations, beyond ND's slick gambit vs GA we saw.

I do think that the advantage of being generally successful in these situations must certainly be a consideration for everyone. Often when an attempt is successful the momentum swing is considerable.

Seems as though some coaches do better with this than others. Either because the good coach understands the situation and his personnel better, or luck.
