Here are my preseason thoughts on the North Suburban Conference.
1. This is Warren's conference, regardless of what McNulty has to say.
2. There does not seem to be a lot of Senior talent in this conference.
3. With the lack of Senior talent in this conference I feel the conference is set up for a let down.
4. Is there a conference in the state that gets less respect? A semifinalist and quarterfinalist a year ago and rarely do people talk about it.
5. Zion and Waukegan should both look to join the NLCC. The football scores (and results in other sports) get ugly.

Predictions for 2024:
1. Warren: 8-1 (Lose to Maine South)....name to watch Sophomore Aaron Stewart
2. Libertyville: 8-1 (Lose to Warren).....name to watch Sophomore Blaise LaVista
3. Lake Zurich: 7-2 (Lose to Warren and Libertyville)....name to watch Junior Jackson Piggott
4. Stevenson 6-3 (Lose to LZ, Warren and Libertyville)....name to watch Sophomore Aidan Crawley
5. Lake Forest 4-5 (Lose to Carmel, Libertyville, Stevenson, Warren and LZ)
6. Mundelein 4-5 (Lose to Stevenson, Warren, Libertyville, LZ and Lake Forest)....name to watch Senior Brandon Hansen
7. Zion: 1-8
8. Waukegan: 1-8

You seem to be high on LHS. While consistently a quality program, they have not gone far lately. I hope you're right about them, and will probably ride my bike over to Butler and watch them Friday night. And you're right, it has to be discouraging for Waukegan and Zion to play in that conference.

I released my Conference Look video on the North Sub today and the overriding theme for me is who are the big time, star power players? I'll wait for your answer.

Your 5th point, regarding Waukegan and Zion-Benton leaving the North Suburban Conference for the Northern Lake County Conference is a valid point ... for the Bulldogs and Zee-Bees.
Waukegan hasn't won a conference game in varsity football since September of 2011 which is all you need to know about the program.
That said, letting bottom feeders Waukegan and Z-B go to another conference would seem to have a serious negative effect on two of the remaining six teams in the North Suburban Conference.Specifically, Mundelein and Lake Forest.
Lake Forest has made the playoffs 14 times in last 16 years (no playoffs in 2020), But, in 11 of those 14 years, the Scouts lost 3 or 4 times in the regular season. Which begs the question, in a six-team league with five conference games, and 4 of them against Libertyville, Lake Zurich, Stevenson and Warren, can the Scouts give up what are pretty much two guaranteed win games vs. Waukegan and Z-B and still be a viable playoff contender every year.
A six-team league plays five league games and four non-league games. Will Lake Forest be able to find two softies (in college, they are called directional schools) in order to enhance their playoff chances?
Remember, adding Waukegan and Z-B to the Northern Lake County Conference turns that into a 10-team league (all conference games)? I mean the 8 current teams in the NLCC also want to make the playoffs and they are all want to get winnable games vs. the two newcomers.
As for Mundelein, the situation is even worse. The Mustangs haven't made the playoffs in 17 years. Their path to 5-4 is always win two non-league games to start the year, beat Waukegan and Zion-Benton, and then hope to steal a fifth win vs. Libertyville, Stevenson, Warren, Lake Zurich or Lake Forest.
In a six-team North Suburban, it's like that. non-league games will be weeks 1-4. In weeks 3-4, where will Mundelein and Lake Forest find pretty much win games to replace Waukegan and Zion-Benton?
In the Lake Forest case, the Scouts play "up" in terms of enrollment all conference season, which makes them a dangerous floater come November.
So whlle Waukegan and Z-B makes total football sense to join the Northern Lake County Conference, it's definitelly going to hurt two of the remaining teams in the league. And, heck, there are years when LIbertyville and even Stevenson scuffle a bit and they can use the two sure wins.

I would say ask the players on Waukegan and Zion what they think. Maybe they look for small victories, like scoring a TD vs. Warren or things of that nature. I don't know, but I give them credit for putting a team out there. Funny but years ago (60's) Waukegan kicked our ass a couple times when I played.

Want an idea....Zion and Waukegan go to the NLCC and the remaining NSC schools join the MSL.

LF, and I'm thinking probably Libertyville too, would go to the CSL before the MSL. But I don't see the NSC breaking up. Most every conference, unfortunately, has schools kinda stuck at the bottom. For whatever reason, Vernon Hills didn't want to join, so the NSC had to grab Waukegan to stay even.

I don't blame you because you wouldn't know this. But there are no small victories for Waukegan vs. Warren. The teams have been in the same league for seven seasons and the scores in order starting with 2016 are 42-7, 34-0, 49-0, 56-0, 55-0, 75-0 and 47-0.
To be fair, Warren is an elite-level 8A program so the scores make some sense in that regard. But last year, Zion-Benton went 1-8 ... the "1" was a 56-0 win over Waukegan.
In the big picture, all Waukegan varsity team sports have losing conference records in the seven years that they've played in the North Suburban Conference. So, it's not just football. Girls basketball. Boys basketball. Softball. Baseball. Boys volleyball. Girls volleyball. In the team sports, the Bulldogs are overmatched, which is why some in the community would like the school to have a better chance at some success by playing less highly regarded schools. The flip side of that is those who say that to be the best, you have to challenge the best, and that makes sense too.
In any case, nothing's going to change because one person who is getting older by the minute wants it to change.
As for the NSC, look for Warren to go 7-0, but not be playing the final two Saturdays in November. Arguably one of the great defensive programs in the state ever year has yet to develop an air-raid type offense with a QB who can light up the board with a free-wheeling passing attack.

Air raid offense is not very effective in snow and cold weather. You win with a balanced offense & strong defense. More efficient passing ganr would help Warren.
If it was easy all 8A programs would have championship. Atleast Warren has an identity that does not change - dominant defense. . Finding the right balance of skilled players QB, RB, WR and string O-Line is very difficult. Stay tuned. Being super competitive every year HS football is very difficult and that is what Warren does. 🎢

Air Raid offense is. not very effective in snow and. cold weather.
See the University of Wisconsin ... home of gigantic O-lineman opening holes for running backs that are good enough to play on Sunday.
The Badgers' new offensive coordinator is air-raid specialist Matt Luke. He's a desciple of air-raid legend, the late Mike Leach.
I am using the following paragraph from a story about Luke joining the Badgers that was written by The Athletic.
"Longo is set to bring his dynamic and exciting offensive attack to Wisconsin after being hired by new Badgers coach Luke Fickell (the program has yet to officially announce the move). Longo, a disciple of the up-tempo Air Raid system, figures to help dramatically shift Wisconsin’s approach, which has been predicated on a pro-style offense for decades."
And it's not Wisconsin. Purdue has new offensive coordinator in Graham Harrell. And this is what was written about him on the Boiler Upload website. Turns out Harrell was a QB in college.
"In the fall of 2004, Graham Harrell stepped onto the campus at Texas Tech after being recruited by none other than Mike Leach. The late Leach, who just passed away at the age of 61, was a pioneer in the college football world as the most notable air raid offense adopter.
Under Leach's tutelage, Harrell had one of the greatest careers as a quarterback in college football history. Harrell broke all kinds of records in Lubbock through the air raid attack, most notably setting the NCAA record in career passing touchdowns. He was also the first player to record two 5,000 passing yard seasons in NCAA history.
Obviously, college teams can recruit whereas Warren takes what it gets. "
My point is, cold weather or not, these Big Ten teams are going to the air in an attempt to catch up with the league's true superpowers.
And I happen to think that for Warren to catch up with the 8A powerhouses (Loyola, L-W East, for example), that the passing game needs to be much more of a threat than it has been. I mean, even in the years when your son was a four-star major college recruit as a wideout at Warren, he maybe wasn't utilized nearly in the way he probably could have been utilized to produce more Blue Devil offense.

2. Warren
3. Lake Zurich
4. Stevenson

Pretty impressive win by LHS. I watched most of the 1st half and thought Lemont was the better team. LHS must have scored late in 2nd qtr? Anyway, let's keep it up. Maybe conference race will be more interesting than first thought, but it is only one week.

I think this is Libertyvilles year. Their feeder program has been really good the last 3-4 years. If they don’t do it this year I’m not sure when they will.

Look at Mundelein's schedule, they could very well start 4-0 and finish 4-5.

Week 2 Predictions

Warren over Maine South (Is QB1 back for MS?)
Carmel over Lake Forest (Carmel has two Division 1 QBs on their roster)
Lake Zurich over Glenbrook South (Can GBS stop LZ workhorse Pirrone 29 carries for 160+ yards in week 1)
Libertyville over Richards (LaVista will show another opponent why he is named Blaise)
Stevenson over Taft (The Patriots with not the strongest non-con schedule this year)
Mundelein over Grayslake North (Mundelein will start the season 4-0)
Maine West over Waukegan
Antioch over Zion (Heard this week ZB will not a have JV team this season)

Here are my preseason thoughts on the North Suburban Conference.

2. There does not seem to be a lot of Senior talent in this conference.
3. With the lack of Senior talent in this conference I feel the conference is set up for a let down.

3. Lake Zurich: 7-2 (Lose to Warren and Libertyville)....name to watch Junior Jackson Piggott
4. Stevenson 6-3 (Lose to LZ, Warren and Libertyville)....name to watch Sophomore Aidan Crawley
5. Lake Forest 4-5 (Lose to Carmel, Libertyville, Stevenson, Warren and LZ)
6. Mundelein 4-5 (Lose to Stevenson, Warren, Libertyville, LZ and Lake Forest)....name to watch Senior Brandon Hansen
7. Zion: 1-8
8. Waukegan: 1-8
I do think LF finds a way to make it back to the playoffs this season. Very few Seniors last year, the underclassmen took their lumps and should be better off for it.

Are they good enough to beat Carmel? I have no idea but they should at least learn a lot about themselves this week. Last week, up 37-0 at the half, I doubt they grew much from that... although it probably felt nice after last year.

I'm sure Warren will shake off their 0-2 start.

The conference went 4-4 over the weekend. Conference schedule starts this week with some big early season games!

Current Conference Rankings
1. Libertyville
2. Lake Zurich
3. Warren
4. Stevenson
5. Lake Forest
6. Mundelein
7. Zion
8. Waukegan

Thanks for the NSC thread! Great insights, content. Am eager for this week. LZ/Stevie, Warren/Libertyville, Mundelein tracking to be 3-0 (likely 4-0)...
Am a Stevie guy, so super curious how this team really is? They're making some great moves w/ rebuilding the football culture from the youth level on up. The program lost its' way for a minute.

Week 3 Predictions....
Libertyville over Warren....I feel Wildcats have a little more experience heading into this game. It could be for the Conference Championship. This game could end up being a shoot out.

Lake Zurich over Stevenson.... The Bears have more experience as the Patriots have 8-10 sophomores playing up on Varsity including their QB. I see this being a low scoring game.

Lake Forest over Waukegan

Mundelein over Zion

Warren over Libertyville. I am surprised by the score of the game. Warren's opening two weeks prepared them for NSC play.

LZ over Stevenson. The Bears slept through the first half but came out of hibernation to take it to the young Patriots.

Lake Forest over Waukegan
Mundelein over Zion

Week 4 Rankings
1. Warren
2. Libertyville
3. Lake Zurich
4. Stevenson
5. Lake Forest
6. Mundelein
7. Zion
8. Waukegan

Interesting night in the North Suburbs....

Mundelein 37 - Waukegan 16 (The 4-0 Mustangs need to find a win in the last 5)

Warren 41 - Stevenson 16 (The young Blue Devils are starting to click for the conference Championship game next week).

Lake Forest 31 - Libertyville 28 2OT (The Wildcats have not lived up to who I thought they were, the Scouts are a team to watch!)

Lake Zurich 34 - Zion 7 (The Bears seem to be relying on the run game. Will they be able to run the ball against a physical Warren defense next week?)

Week 5 Rankings
1. Warren
2. Lake Zurich
3. Lake Forest
4. Libertyville
5. Stevenson
6. Mundelein
7. Zion
8. Waukegan

What a game between longtime rivals Lake Forest and Libertyville. LF really screwed up not winning in regulation and Libertyville really screwed up not winning in the second overtime. But both teams played really hard and both should be in the playoffs...if LF can get Nate Williams back they should be able to make a good run this year.

Reeeaallly wanna see Mundelein get win #5 and get in the playoffs. They've been getting closer and closer for years.

And agree, thought Libertyville would be much better than they've shown - it's still early though - could be one of those 5-4/6-3 teams that gets in and then makes a run to at least the quarterfinals.

I think we are seeing the effects of teams that played against tough non con foes Vs those that didn’t.

I agree would like to see Mundelein make it. Tough stretch coming up with Stevenson, Warren LZ Lib and LF to close the year

I am not sure about Mundelein.
First of all, they are not getting closer and closer to the playoffs each year.
Last year they won 3. Year before they won 4 but the fourth was week 9 over hapless Zion Benton so they had no chance at playoffs either year.
Before the Covid season, the program was pretty much a dumpster fire so when they take the field Friday night it will be the first time since 2015 that they were playing a game for win number 5. And in 2015, they had three bites at the 5-win apple, but drew three of the league's top teams and lost them all by a total of 90-plus points.
Now the 2023 problem: they have no shot vs. Warren and Lake Zurich.
That leaves Libertyville, Stevenson and Lake Forest.
Stevenson and Libertyville are 2-2 and have not yet played Zion-Benton Waukegan or Mundelein and might need all three wins to get to 5-4.
Lake Forest is 3-1 but only has Zion and Mundelein still to play. So they might need to beat Mundelein Week 9 for them to get to five wins.
I don’t see a fifth win on Mundelein's schedule although they have five chances which is five more than their norm.
Such a roll of the dice that is a scheduling quirk.
Just ask fans of Warren who were 0-2 and now are looking at 7-2.

Regardless, I'm gonna pull for them anyway. I'm a Maine East grad, so I'm a fan of the underdogs :)

Well the Mustangs did manage to beat Libertyville 2 years ago as 28 point underdogs (Massey) so anything can happen. let's hope for the best!

If you're pulling for Mundelein, their best chance might actually be this week because Stevenson seems pretty young this year.

But four of the last five on the road... not going to be easy for them.

Week 5 Predictions....

Lake Forest over Zion
Libertyville over Waukegan

Stevenson over Mundelein ... this is essentially a playoff game for each team. I feel the coaching and young dynamic players from Stevenson are too much for the Mustangs.

Warren over Lake Zurich....Lake Zurich has been doing it with a strong defense and little no offense. Warren has a two headed monster in the backfield and maybe the states best all around athlete in Aaron Stewart. This could be the Conference Championship.

Asking for your view.
If not this week, then when/if/never for 4-0 Mundelein? Or do you see it as I do, and the order in which the games were scheduled makes the Mustangs a 4-0 team in similar fashion to how the schedule "helped" Nazareth Academy to being 0-4?

Mundelein's schedule has them 4-0 their opponents are 4-12 to this point. I understand why they schedule not as tough non-conference games, as the conference slate is a struggle for them.

Could they win this week? They could....I am personally not a believer till they knock off 1 or 2 of the better programs in the NSC.

Week 5 Review....

Stevenson 10 - Mundelein 3 ... The Patriots should qualify for the playoffs...uphill battle the rest of the way for the Mustangs

Libertyville 40 - Waukegan 22 .... Thats a lot of points for the Cats to give up v Waukegan.

Lake Forest 35 - Zion 26 .... The score of this game was much closer than I thought it should be.

Warren 21 - Lake Zurich 17 ... Warren played their ball control style and the Bears played good defense for the majority of the game. Warren should be NSC Champions.

Week 6 Rankings.
1. Warren
2. Lake Zurich
3. Libertyville
4. Lake Forest
5. Stevenson
6. Mundelein
7. Zion
8. Waukegan

You summed it up well. I thought maybe the Mustangs would surprise Stevenson, it appears it was close anyway. Best chance for them is Libertyville or LF, as you said both gave up too many points this week. Maybe it was late points vs. 2nd and 3rd string?
