Tresman

Re: Trestman

While it is no surprise, part of me ( a small part) was because of the time left on the contracts of both Trestman and Emery. The Bears usually wait till there is no more than one year left on a contract to fire a head coach.

Anyway, with Harbaugh off to Michigan, the question is, what happens next? That may take a while to figure out. The name Rex Ryan is being kicked around in the Media for San Francisco or Chicago. Can you just imagine that guy coming here? I don't think there is a chance in hell he comes here and I don't like him. But it would be the most interesting thing since Ditka left.

Re: Trestman

The bigger question is, if Cutler stays, what kind of coach would WANT to come to the Bears knowing that Cutler is a coach killer? In many respects, you've got to wonder about a coach who is desperate enough to want to come to coach the Bears.

Good point Ramblin but I can give you the answer in one word...money.

You know as well as I do head coaches make far more money than assistants do. And if the Bears bring in a guy with HC experience they know he will command money.

The Bears will be loathe to pay a premium for an experienced HC to come in and turn things around. They already have to pay Trestman for the two years left on his contract. They already have an overpaid QB who is a coach killer.

I'm sure there are coaches who, for the money, would come to the Bears. I guess what I am saying is that you have to wonder about a coach who wants anywhere near the train wreck that is the Bears.

Will the Bears be willing to compensate Mike Shanahan or Rex Ryan or Mike Smith with the kind of combat pay that they would command/demand to take a job with the Bears? Or, will they go cheap (as they usually do with coaches) and look to hire a rising star? I bet the latter. I wish the former.

Ramblin:

You are right on with your assessment and probably right about who the Bears pick next. If ever there was a time for a coach with experience it is now. If they bring in another rookie head coach it says once and for all that saving money trumps winning.

I did a little research. We know the Bears have been an up and down and inconsistent organization ever since Ditka left. But they have only been able to string together three consecutive seasons of winning percentages of .500 or over with one coach since Ditka's departure. Those happened to be Lovie Smith's last three years.

Ditka was the last George Halas head coach signing. I remember the time he left, all of the Halas coaches and players were for the most part gone. For me, that was the takeover point for the McCaskeys and it hasn't been pretty. You look back into the recent past and look at these guys they signed after Ditka. You know it's bad when you say Lovie was the best. Smith did have a winning record. But it has become a bad organization.

Make no mistake about it. No one can give credit to the organization that fired Trestman and Emery. That was a no brainer. But, they didn't do it because they want the fans to think they are really trying to win. They did it because if they didn't, Lake Forest would have turned into Ferguson, Missouri and Halas Hall would have been a building being looted and burned.

You can bet they are pissed because this is going to cost them more money.

Re: Trestman

Rex Ryan? That would be so Bears-like to bring in a guy that couldn't make the playoffs for his four years in NY and managed to have a worse record this past year in a watered-down NFL than Trestman. The fact that his name is being bantered about is evidence of how shallow the coaching pool is in the NFL.

Re: Trestman

Ryan is a viable candidate for a number of reasons. For one, his defenses are consistently top ten units - ha also has proven he can lead a team deep into the playoffs. Wouldn't be my first choice but as a local guy it wouldn't surprise me.

Re: Trestman

I'm no Rex Ryan fan, and I very much would prefer that he not be the next HC of the Bears. HOWEVER, I think the Bears could do a lot worse. If they hired Ryan, they would also have to hire an experienced OC guru.

Another good point Ramblin and the Bears certainly have done worse. They just fired the guy.

While I kind of like the entertainment value of Ryan, he is also the kind of guy you can grow to hate quickly because of his big mouth...much like Ozzie Guillen.

But, it's all about winning and I will take any coach who can come here and win.
