Reed-Custer 77, Carver 24 F

And they could have tacked on more
But why? Once you hit the 40 and clock them, there's no reason to keep piling on. If your Bs or Cs (or Ds) are in and you're still scoring, fine. I'm not saying take a knee every play, but there's still a thing about being classy. Running up the score doesn't prove what you think it does.

I was referring to the new 3A playoff record of 77 points and I wasn't trying to prove anything. Their starters were out by the middle of the third. I wasn't recommending running up the score.

It looked like RC wanted to get their starters reps at least into the 2nd Q. They scored on the first play of the 2nd to go up 48-8. I literally stepped away for a couple minutes to make a cup of coffee and RC had the ball again up 56-8 and their starters ran one more play and scored. 63-8 and the 2’s and 3’s were in after that which was like 2 minutes into the 2nd Q. I had been checking out some other games by that point.
63-8 was the halftime score.
I don’t feel like they ran it up. Carver couldn’t cover or tackle much of anything, but had a couple fast kids that broke loose for long scores when they had the ball. Once against the first team, twice against the backups.

It's funny, people who don't follow a program look at a team like RC and all the points they're scoring and just assume the HC is classless and burying people. This couldn't be further from the truth. Johnson has pulled his starters in every game and then the 2's and 3's go in and put on their own show. Most coaches would give an arm and a leg for a team this deep. What's he going to do, tell them not to score too much? They were in the weight room all year and at practice every day. They deserve to eat too.

TREND (COUNTING NON-GRAYED GAMES ONLY): NONE YET...need three games

They haven't even played 3 teams with positive strength of schedule ratings. That's what I'm looking at.

Just read story in paper.....RC was up 16-0 after just 49 seconds elapsed off the clock and they were up 40-8 at end of 1st qtr after running just 10 plays from scrimmage and 1st team offense was pulled after 7 scores on 14 plays. Not sure what people expect them to do.

I haven’t seen a single post about the head coach being classless

LOL on this board??? How about this from a previous post: " but there's still a thing about being classy. Running up the score doesn't prove what you think it does"

R-C SOS is definitely lacking and a contributing factor to them clocking everyone.
We will learn more about them the next week or two.
Not to mention, it's not their problem the conference is down this year and scheduling non-conf 2-3 years in advance is always a gamble. btw, who's to say Arcola or Elmwood Park didn't call RC about setting up a game?

I didn't say the coach was classless. Picking piecemeal quotes out without the surrounding context changes the meaning.

It is a tired trope to always blame blowout scores as being classless in the moment. Of course the second or third stringers should get to play. Of course they're going to play hard. Neither of those things are wrong. Instead, I'm pointing out that if you're going to be a high caliber team, play high caliber teams. Obviously conference games are conference games and short of jumping conferences, which introduces all sorts of other factors to consider, there's not much to be done about them.

The non-cons do offer a chance to play up though. Just because Arcola or EP came calling doesn't mean you have to accept.

If you a very powerful team and play a weak schedule you almost need to beat teams by 60 points if you want to win a state title. You can’t pull your starters in the 2nd quarter all year and expect to win games in quarterfinals and beyond when competition gets stiff.

To the defense of Reed-Custer’s AD, they have scheduled both those non conference teams for what appears to be at least a home and home 2 year series that started last year. I have no idea when that deal was struck, but before last year RC was, quite frankly, a bad program who had no business scheduling non conference heavyweights.
I don’t know first hand, but it seems that getting non conference games on fairly short notice isn’t easy. Wilmington and Lisle had to play each other twice this year because they each couldn’t find a week 2 opponent.
With RCs “soft” schedule, the team has absolutely done what a team of their caliber should do. Not a single game has been in doubt at halftime, usually the first quarter. The jury is still out on the conference, but Coal City and Wilmo have tough matchups going forward.
Will all this hurt RC? Idk maybe. I think they will probably roll Du-Pec and then the next game could be more interesting.

That's fair.
