Interesting Read....

Many small schools are starting to adopt this approach towards sports. Lifting should be based on the "athletic program" not just one sport at a time.

All coaches must buy in and not discourage players from being involved in other sports or activities.

I've heard of coaches telling kids not to play basketball because they "need to get bigger" or don't play baseball because the kid *needs to work on speed." At small schools, this approach doesn't work. Schools who are lacking numbers and aren't successful, I bet this is part of the problem.

Competition and practice in any sport is just as beneficial as out of season lifting and workouts.

When it comes to summer camps, communicate and don't schedule things as the same time. If a conflicts arise, let the kid pick and don't get upset about. One camp day in June/July won't make or break your season in any sport. But sadly there are a lot of selfish coaches out there.

While I agree with most of your post, this stood out to me. You need competition but also need to be in the weight room.

I recently met with Coach Lynch at Mt Carmel. He said the #1 reason Mt Carmel has the success they do is the offseason "Caravan Tough" workout program. 3x a week at 6am, From Jan-May, every player works out together and then does speed training together. Doesn't matter if you're in a different sport. If you're in basketball season and have a game that night, you still lift. Have a baseball game at night, still lift. No excuses. He said these are HS kids and their bodies can take it. All the athletic coaches have bought into it as well. Never has any issues with other coaches.

Lynch mentioned Alek Thomas being a HS All-American baseball player and he never missed one Caravan Tough session.

Too often the weight room gets neglected because an athlete is in season with another sport. You need to do both.

Let’s be real, it’s because they recruit the best athletes. It’s 2024, everybody lifts 3 times a week. Let’s not act like they found some secret sauce nobody has thought of before.

This is absolutely not the #1 reason they've had success. Especially when the previous two head coaches also won state championships there.

Promoting FB player participation in other sports can be contingent upon the other program(s) sharing the same values of training, supervision, sportsmanship, safety, etc. On universal lifting, some schools try to use PE class electives as in/out of-season weight-training platforms. But unless you can pair up some before school time with a 1st hour section, it would be tough to squeeze in all of strength, speed and agility covered in a 6am start schedule.

He wasn't saying he developed it and is taking credit for it. He said the "caravan tough" lifting program started way before him.

He was saying that Mt. Carmel has developed a culture that everyone comes to 6am lifting in the offseason

Everyone lifts but not all lifting is the same.
You can get talented freshman to come to your school but that doesn't mean they will be developed.
Mt Carmel does an outstanding job developing their players.

Wait, so a kid can have a late night away basketball game on say Tuesday and be back at school at 6am for strength and speed training, do a full day of classes, and then basketball practice? They can do it but that's a lot even for a teenager.

That’s disingenuous at best. At worst you are just a single cell organism pecking away here. Mt. Carmel does not have access to some secret lifting program nobody else does. To say otherwise just showcases your ignorance. Once again check the date. Information is free flowing and anyone can access an elite lifting program. Jimmy’s and Joe’s matter at this level.

I believe the biggest difference is some schools like MC, LWE, LA, MS, Warren, among others build culture starting with the youth leagues. If you build the culture get parents involved and buy in from the kids the weight lifting programs take it all to a next level. I guarantee you LWE has a weight lifting program comparable to MC or any of the other top programs. These schools play football at a different level for a reason. Great coaching, great culture, great off season lifting. It’s no accident the hand full of schools are playing at state almost every year.
