#6 Downs (Tri-Valley) (8-2) at #3 Wilmington (9-1) - Rematch of last years Semifinals matchup. I don't think that the level of competition stacks up and this shouldn't be the end of the Wildcats season. Wilmington continues to grind out another win. 35-7

3A

#7 Pecatonica [Du-Pec Coop] (8-2) at #2 Braidwood (Reed-Custer) (10-0) - Du-Pec is outmatched here. They haven't really beat anyone that great and they lost to a few good teams. I don't think RC skates the way they did last week, but I still think they end up with a clock. Vomits 56-10

4A

#8 Coal City (7-3) at #1 Carterville (10-0) - They are the 1 for a reason and undefeated. It is always hard to judge some of those teams. They beat some bad teams and some decent ones. Going on the road is the deciding factor here. Coal city plays tough and hangs for a bit but Carterville is too much in the end. The Lions win by 2 scores. 42-28

Round 1 went how we all pretty much thought it would go. Round 2 does get a bit more interesting

2A

#6 Downs (Tri-Valley) (8-2) at #3 Wilmington (9-1) - Rematch from last post season. Wilmo has been on a roll since their loss to Braidwood. Downs has played and beaten numerous teams who are still prepping for a round 2 game. Being that the Cats are playing at home I will give them the win but I think this is a very close game. Cats 27 Vikings 21

3A

#7 Pecatonica [Du-Pec Coop] (8-2) at #2 Braidwood (Reed-Custer) (10-0) -Nobody has given the Comets a four quarter game and I don't see this being it either. Du Pec plays in a really good confference but it is a 1A/2A conference. Comets are too good and too fast for Du Pec. Comets 53 Riverman 13

4A

#8 Coal City (7-3) at #1 Carterville (10-0) - Coalers grinded out an ugly win Saturday over Wood River, Carterville gave Geneseo a pretty good beating. I thought that would be a closer game. Caterville is the real deal. They don't play real physical but they are quick and athletic. Personnel and scheme wise they remind me a lot of Braidwood. Thing is their defense bends but doesn't break. They do give up yards. Coalers have made improvements with their passing game this season and they will need a good mix of passing and pounding the rock. Coalers make the long trip down and come up with the upset win. Coalers 31 Lions 28

I'm planning on checking out the Reed-Custer game. First trip to R-C, anything I should know about parking/seating/the stadium/etc.?

Should be plenty of parking. Bleacher seating is pretty typical 3A school size.
Babes in Coal City or Nellys/Rt. 66 in Wilmo are good spots to grab a pregame bite. There’s a BBQ place in Braidwood on Reed Rd. but I haven’t been there in a while.. not since they changed ownership.

Tri-Valley (8-2) at Wilmington (9-1) - New season, new teams, but same result. The good folks of Downs are beginning to hate this drive. Wilmington 38 TV 13

Pecatonica (8-2) at RC (10-0) - Sorry Pec, but you are the next bug on the Comets windshield. Thanks for playing though! RC 58 Pec 7

Coal City (7-3) at Carterville (10-0) - The Coalers have steadily improved all season, but it all ends here. Long bus ride home, but CC has a season to be proud of. Carterville 41 CC 14

Coal City grinds out a win. ICE has 3 teams in quarter finals!

Really......Nellys over Hayden's? Surprising pick there

Nelly’s/Rt.66 for craft beers. Hayden’s food is superior but if you just want a burger Nelly’s should do the trick. Love the onion rings/strings at Nelly’s

Might be some bad weather on Saturday...

#6 Downs (Tri-Valley) (8-2) at #3 Wilmington (9-1)
I just don't think Tri-Valley will be able to slow down the Wilmo ground and pound enough to get a win. I do think they could hit the Cats for a couple big plays, but Wilmo has been playing very solid football since the debacle in Braidwood. 34-14 Cats.

#7 Pecatonica [Du-Pec Coop] (8-2) at #2 Braidwood (Reed-Custer) (10-0)
Not much else to say. NUIC comes calling, but it's not Lena-Winslow and the Comet clock streak continues. 54-13 Comets.

#8 Coal City (7-3) at #1 Carterville (10-0)
Read some reports that Carterville operates a similar offense as Reed-Custer, and has some talented athletes and good size on the lines. They dispatched Geneseo rather easily - more easily than I expected. Coal City got off to a slow start against Wood River, but eventually got a lead to protect and salted it away. I just don't think the Coalers have enough to pull out a win here. Carterville 35-20.

Try-Valley at Wilmington- The Cats seem to be playing normal Wildcat playoff football at the right time. Don’t see Wilmington having any problems here. Most 2A teams are ready for the physical game of the Cats. 28-7 Cats

DuPec at RC- Comets keep rolling in the first round with a joke of a matchup. DuPec is a team that made a nice run last season to the quarters. This could be the first real test for the Comets. Especially with some wind/rain in the forecast. Interested in seeing the score for this one. RC 35 DuPec 12

Coal City at Carterville- The Coalers seem to have found a passing game late in the season. Just don’t think they have the athletes to compete with Carterville. Good season but I think this is where it ends. Carterville 34 Coalers 14

Reed-Custer vs. Du Pec - I think this matchup would have been better last season but DuPec graduated a lot of key cogs from last years team. RC is still rolling but last week was more of a walkthrough than an actual game, by far their easiest opponent this season. Both teams run a similar style of offense but the Comets run game is better than their pass game and the win will make it a challenge to throw the ball. Reed-Custer 50 Du Pec 21

Coal City at Carterville - a long road trip for an early 1pm game, I hope the Coalers are going down the night before. I know nothing Carterville and the Coalers have improved as the season progressed but just looking at scores and competition, I have to go with Carterville in a close one. Carterville 32 Coal City 24

Wilmington vs. Tri Valley - finally a team that I am familiar playing a team that has been a thorn in the side of the Heart of Illini Conference the past few years. Coach Roop runs a solid program at TV and he gets the most out of each player on the team and even in down years, they always seem to find a way to get wins. This team is not at the level of last years team but they do have the ability to keep this game closer than most think. An average line is blocking for a big RB, who reminds me a lot of Wilmington’s big RB from last season, and a QB who has shown the ability to make plays running the ball (QB Run is a Roop staple). The Vikings pass game is not great but they have shown this season they can extend drives by converting 3rd and Longs. Combine that with a 3 yr starter at LB who is one of the, if not, the best LB in the HOI and a DE who made some plays in this game last season. TV has to put together long scoring drives and not turn the ball over if they want to stay in this game. Wilmington has played a tougher schedule, beat better opponents, and play faster and more physical than any team in the HOI. This one will be much closer than people think, TV has to play perfect to win. Wilmington 36 Tri Valley 24.
