Hazing at Wheaton College

Sad story. I know they are coached to be better men.

Indeed. This will likely have further legs given the name recognition of the one player.

There are several types of hazing that goes on. I played college football and as a freshman was hazed. My head was shaven and we had to sing in front of the team.

If what has been published is 100% factual, then I believe the line was crossed.

I would encourage each person here to hold off on passing judgement until the whole story comes out.

Remember, the writers of the news paper publish articles to sell papers and do not always put all the truth in their articles.

I believe there is a lot more to come from this.

I agree 100%. I'll also be praying for Coach Swider. I've known him for over 20 years and he is a great coach, father and husband.

I guess I never will understand the point of hazing. How does shaving a guys head and making him stand in front of the team make your team better at football? Better at blocking or tackling? Better at throwing or receiving or kicking the ball?

Don't tell me it's for team unity because that's a load of crap. Plenty of teams have had great success and haven't had to resort to mind numbing tactics that are just rediculous.

If I was chancellor at Wheaton College I couldn't expel these pieces of garbage fast enough.

I'm curious, did Coach Swider have full and complete knowledge** of this incident before or after these five stepped onto the field this year?

** I understand the public does not have full and complete knowledge.

Spielman left a scholarship at Toledo, went to Wheaton because of his faith. Yikes...

The statement from the university mentions the football staff was involved in the internal investigation, so yes.

I grew up in Wheaton and currently live here and I've never been a fan of the college or the people at the college for to many reasons to list but if I'm being honest there is zero chance I'm throwing those kids off the team. This is the first time ever they have a legitimate chance to win a national title and without the Spielman and Kreger kid they have no chance. If I'm them I bunker down let the bad PR blow over and go try to win it all, if they do that no one will even remember this.

College sports are scummy at all levels and it even filters down to D3, its just a matter of how far at you willing to go to win.

yeah, they ain't playing. being arrested and charged with felonies pretty much precludes that happening. Doesn't matter D1 or D3. The larger issue the college will have now is how big of check they end up writing

So you're saying you'd play these kids, even with felony charges against them? Because making a run at a national title is more important?

Pretty much college sports is a cess pool if you want to win you gotta jump in.

"Fake" News? Yeah.

You're right, it's called indictments.

Be a real journalist and represent his entire statement. Clearly, he delineates a bald head from what is accused at Wheaton.

Fake news accusation when you can't understand what this man was implying? You're part of the problem.

What? I used it as an example but you fail to answer the question... how does this make you better at football by doing stupid crap like this? Whether it's assaulting someone or making someone shave their head.

How does your football team get better by making someone or forcing someone to make an ass out of themselves?

Try answering the question.

There is difference between playfulness among rough men and assault as described. If dude was told, "all O-linemen have Mohawks," he'd have shaved his head himself.

If they said, "all O-linemen have to shove a hairbrush up their butts," he'd have NOT done it willingly. Very much the same as saying we will dislocate your shoulders --- it's assault he's not commit to.

That's the difference.

And which one of those make a football team better? How does that kind of stuff make a football team better?

It's going to be lost on you - but little things like that, you accept and smile about.

I never had my head shaved - But I carried equipment and got beers for seniors after the game.

Clearly it's lost somewhere because I still haven't heard seen or read anywhere where it makes someone better at football.

Bonding, shared sacrifice, every branch military does it so I'm sure there has been some thought put into it shaving your head.

My freshman year of college first day of practice every freshman had to get up at lunch and sing a song in front of the team. You would get up introduce yourself and where you from and sing a song, afterward I can't tell you how many guys came up to me and talked to me since they knew a little bit about me. It was embarrassing but made so I met a ton of guys the first day.

LakeCtyNewt,

Shaving your head does not make you a better tackler or blocker. Singing in front of the team does not make you a better pass catcher or thrower of the football. You are very correct when you say that these things do not make one a "better" football player.

As someone that has played this game, and the game has given me more than I will ever be able to give it, these are forms of team bonding and camaraderie. I do not condone what happened at LZ or WC as these were taken WAY to far. But, I will say that having to sing a song and shave my head made me feel like I was accepted from the upper classmen and part of the team.

You seem very angry by the idea of these evens. What is your background on the football field?

Haven’t played - have coached for 11 years and covered the game in one way shape in form for 22 years. Also have a son that has played for 9 years.

I guess since I haven’t played that makes me somewhat less qualified but I don’t see where making people do inane or stupid things improves football performance. Bottom line is it doesn’t.

Between the LZ saga, the Hamilton AZ situation and now Wheaton - it disgusts me to no end.

I love this game and I hate seeing selfish and mentally deranged people destroying it.

I never said you were not qualified to offer your opinion. I have been on this board since 2012 and always have valued your thoughts and insights on things you say. There are alot of bozos on this site that when I see their name, I don't even read what they say because it's a waste of my time. Your thoughts are well put together and thoughtful.

You are correct when you say that these types of acts do not improve athletic performance as I believe that no one is saying that they do. That was not the point in the original post that I put out.

Lastly, I do not think that the acts of few are as you say destroying this game. Our game has alot of other issues that may end up destroying it before the acts of the minority.

Unfortunately this isn't law and order so this case won't be solved by the next commercial break the next few months will be very interesting.

It appears the College did a very extensive investigation using an outside group and some of the findings they have contradict what has been stated in the media so that is why they were comfortable leaving the accused players on the team. The accused will get a day in court and it appears all are lawyered up and ready to fight the charges. Until then we won't know what is true and what is false.

It was announced on this mornings news that all 5 have been suspended from the team.

Thanks BCC. I agree it’s not destroying our game but it’s just a tarnish I wish wasn’t there. Appreciate your perspective
