8 Man Football Video streams....

Just one so far that I'm aware of Saturday at 3PM Decatur Lutheran host St. Thomas More freebie go check it out

I watched the 54 to 40 Decatur Lutheran victory over Milford. There was blocking and tackling, and the Decatur Lutheran players were excited at the end by their victory. So there was that; but not much else. Going in I had adjusted my expectations to the fact this was high school football, and small-school high school football at that. Even so, to be honest I was very disappointed.

The plays struck me as very unimaginative. Ninety percent of Decatur Lutheran's plays were either the quarterback ran to the left, or the quarterback ran to the right. Ninety percent of Milford's plays were a handoff to the running back. There may have been more because I did visit the kitchen quite a few times, but I only remember seeing two completed passes. The Milford quarterback couldn't even successfully throw a pass away toward the end of the game as he couldn't get it out of bounds. He had the opportunity and tried to get it out of bounds, but the pass was intercepted.

There were no extra points. Every attempt by both teams after a touchdown was a two-point conversion attempt. There were no punts. Fourth down and twenty yards to go from your own 35-yard-line, apparently the correct strategy is to go for it. If you are Decatur Lutheran, the correct strategy is to drop back as if you might pass, but then, of course, have your quarterback run the ball just like almost every other play. Essentially there were no kickoffs. Protecting a 14-point lead with two minutes left in the game?, the correct strategy apparently is to try an onside kick. In fact an onside kick is always the appropriate strategy. I recall seeing only one kickoff by either team that went more than twenty yards downfield. And yet, the onside kicks were successful about half the time. And yet again, even with that high success rate the receiving team never thought it appropriate to bring up a fifth player to within ten yards of the point of kick off.

We played more imaginative football as fifth-grade friends in the local park down the street. This was my first time watching eight-man footbal and I'm sorry to be so critical, but based on this one game I found it to be a poor substitute for eleven-man football.
