What are you expecting from SHG this year? I know they graduated a ton of talent.

All..... They return a gifted RB who didn't see a ton of playing time Ethan Hagele. Likely Levi Hanauer who has speed and a decent arm will be the starting qb but there is another.

The Cyclones do have some decent size for lineman. With a total of only three starters coming back it will come down to how quickly the players get seasoned. It means little but the sophomore team last year went 7-0 and trailed Rochester 6-0 at the half before the game was stopped due to weather. Many of those kids will be playing varsity which gives me hope they can acclimate to varsity football quickly. Opening up against 7A Normal Community is a tough way to start the season.

My mantra since the following day after the 2022 season ended has been LFF2023. Looking for five in 2023. That is the start in what will be a wait and see regular season with a new HC and an untested team. Ratsy

All.... A couple more from central and south. Troy (Triad) and Mt. Vernon. The Knights more often then not qualify for postseason play. The Rams after a 0 for season were 5-4 under Coach Mings. Actually the team went 7-2 last year but had to forfeit two games. If I recall correctly the admin didn't file transfer papers on one player. Their mistake. They self reported to the Ihsa and had to give up the Triad and Althoff games. Regardless going from 0-9 to 7-2 got my attention. The return of Coach Mings in his first year back was impressive after many lean seasons. Ratsy

What the heck Ratsy.....no nod for Morris?? LOL

All..... I would like nothing better in November to hang out across the street in that park three hours before game time with Morris and SHG fans as I did in 2012 and 2019.

With the schools slight drop in enrollment to 848.00 I have Morris being a major player in Class 4A. We will see! Ratsy

Ahhh.....didn't know enrollment went down again.

All..... Morris at 862.50 was the smallest team in postseason class 5A last year among the 32 qualifiers. Likely when the season starts listed in 5A. That back and forth bubble team bounce between classes as schools drop out of playoff contention could start in the latter third of the season. Enough to drive you nuts if it's your school. Ratsy

The list of possible 5A teams south of Springfield is fairly short: Marion, Triad, Highland, Mascoutah, Centralia, Carbondale and Mt. Vernon. Both Highland and Centralia can easily go 4A though.

Mt. Vernon is probably the most interesting team for the coming fall, for reasons @cornerrat pointed out. Coach Mings turning a bottom feeder into a contender instantly is impressive. I don’t have too much roster info on them, but I do know they lose their top back from last year in their ground and pound attack.

Marion and Triad have both been playoff stalwarts in recent memory, but will both turn to new head coaches. Should be interesting to see how their seasons turn out.

Overall, nobody stands out above the rest of the crowd in 5A’s 618 area at this point to me. I’d still expect 4-5 qualifiers though.

Mt.Vernon has a deep and talented senior class both sides of the ball.

All.... Sounds like they have reloaded. I looked at them a couple of months ago. Returning QB McMillen a good one who can also run. Some to replace. Davis and Rivera who was a beast.

What could of been last year for the Rams. Self reporting a player that cost a couple of wins through forfeit early in the season. A tough OT loss to Cahokia in week seven and MV finishes 5-4. Those two 1-0 losses really effected postseason seeding. Having to go on the road and play a very good Kankakee team. Ratsy
