A thread to talk about some of the bigger 618 teams(Southern Illinois).

Mascoutah and Mt. Vernon stage major comebacks
Mascoutah hosted Centralia for a battle of the undefeateds and the Orphans came to play. Quarterback Carson Green and back Amir Johnson would tally four first half touchdowns as their team took a 28-7 lead into halftime. Mascoutah’s Allen Middelton scored his team’s lone points off a kickoff.
This surprising lead by the Orphans held until late in the third quarter when quarterback Zane Timon would breathe new life into his squad. In the final 15:50 of the game, he scored three touchdowns on the ground and connected with Middelton for another. The senior would also score on three rushing two point conversions.
This 30 point unanswered explosion gave the Indians a 37-28 victory and a 3-0 record.
Big takeaways?
-Centralia may have been overlooked. Obviously a tough loss for the Orphans, but to have a 21 point lead over Mascoutah still says a lot.
-Mascoutah has a quarterback who can change the game at any time. Not many players can take over a game like that.

Mt.Vernon paid a visit to Triad last Friday as both teams eyed a key second win of the year.
Early on, it looked like the Knights would be the squad improving to 2-1. At the start of the fourth quarter, Triad possessed a 15-0 advantage. But momentum began to change as the Rams charged downfield for their first touchdown with 8 minutes to play.
Triad’s next three possessions would end: with a fumble in the Mt. Vernon red zone, a fumble in their own red zone and being stripped on a kickoff for a touchdown. Mt. Vernon scored a touchdown on all of these drives and quickly found themselves with a 27-15 lead.
In another crazy twist, Triad would score on the ensuing kickoff and would get a quick stop for a potential game winning score. This came too little too late however and the Rams left town with a 27-22 win.
Big takeaways?
-Mt. Vernon continues to prove themselves. A lot of the late game turnovers looked more like takeaways from their defense.
-Triad is going to need a way to stop turning the ball over, having fumbled 7 times in their last two games.

Highland continues resume building
The Bulldogs blasted the Marion Wildcats in 55-14 fashion on Friday. Obviously a lot worked for Highland as Brent Wuebbels passed for over 300 yards, Cade Altadonna received over 100 yards and Travis Porter picked over 100 yards on the ground. Going to be tough for any defense to stop this Bulldog offense.

Other S7/MVC scores: Althoff(2-1) 13-7 over Mater Dei(1-2), Peoria(3-0) 62-16 over Cahokia(1-2), Waterloo(2-1) 35-13 over Carbondale(1-2), Roxana(2-1) 42-0 over Civic Memorial(1-2), and Jerseyville(2-1) 26-14 over Lincoln(2-1)

Southwestern Big 3 take road trips

East Side fell 10-8 in Georgia and the defense continues to look like the strength of this squad. I didn’t watch this game, but the stat book says a lot. No offensive touchdowns for the Flyers(when did that last happen?), but Christopher Bennett JR kept his team in this one with a 70 yard punt return. I won’t pretend to understand a football team down in Georgia, so make of this one what you will.

Edwardsville smoked St. Louis based Soldan 56-0 and O’Fallon cooks Waubonsie Valley 40-0. Impressive days for both squads as they head into a huge game against each other next week.

Other Southwestern scores: Collinsville(2-1) 47-0 Alton(0-3), Belleville East(2-1) 52-19 Metea Valley, Dekalb 49-0 Belleville West(0-3),

20 year old head coach wins
One of the coolest stories I’ve seen this year is Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton’s 20 year old head coach taking the helm. Grant Gordon, who was the school’s starting quarterback in 2020, picked up his first win of the season last week by a score of 54-34 over Goreville.

Week 4 Games to Watch

Mascoutah(3-0) @ Waterloo(2-1) 7:00
Cahokia(1-2) @ Marion(2-1) 7:00
O’Fallon(3-0) @ Edwardsville(3-0) 7:00

Question of the week: As they all enter conference play, who wins the Southwestern, South Seven and Mississippi Valley?
