A group of us clustered with bourbons and cigars around a warming pit on the back deck of Demo's last night. There were four of six from the starting linebacking corps for my junior and senior years represented. Bankers, lawyers, people involved in the professional athletic world, fathers of D1 and Olympic caliber athletes and a security guy ....

One guy says, "How much effing money did Dierre earn today?"

Wanting to appear smart, I said nothing but then nodded as it hit me, there are no signed contracts yet. Nothing says young Mr. Hill has to sign early in December with Oregon. He can wait until All-American teams are named and the Gatorade award is announced. Build on his already impressive pedigree.

"You know his phone is ringing off the hook already. Some Texas billionaire from A&M or UT will make a play. Maybe Portnoy wants to keep him out of the Big 10 if not at Michigan."

The kid already has LIFE-SETTING offers in hand. He can parley yesterday's performance into generational money. (He has smart advisors, I know that for a fact. And the BS about getting hurt, the kid is playing hoops too - but he skipped yesterday's game in Lincoln!)

And he has choices to make again.

As the title indicates, Phil Knight's money is huge, but you need oil to make and ship athletic shoes.

That is the reality of sport today.

Or a subpar defense playing against a stud

He hardly got touched and the team that he was playing against didn’t seem to inspired

If only there was a communication medium that could alert them of happenings in a multi-billion dollar industry so that they can go back and take a look once they are aware of it ... maybe if that was someone's job, that might happen.

I’d pump the brakes on this a bit. You have to be trolling now right? I think Hill is awesome and spent all day yesterday wishing he would somehow magically change his mind and go play for my Illini.

BUT… that was a game against Lena man. A 2,000 person farm town in middle of nowhere northern Illinois that doesnt have a kid that will play serious ball beyond high school.

No P4 coaching staff is over indexing on this game. He’s made his market coming out the prep level by now. He’ll have a chance to take it to another level by competing at the college level and producing there. A runningback coming out of HS that hasn’t played a down of college ball will not get Underwood money.

I have considered the same, but I have also watched the Rivals rankings fluctuate. Today, Dierre is #10 for RBs. Let's see how long that stays - my guess is he moves up the ladder.

Oregon’s other RB commit in this class is Jordon Davison of Mater Dei California. Similar ranking to Hill depending on the service. Mater Dei arguably top HS program in the country. This weekend he ran for 200 yards and 3 TDs in Cali playoffs against St John Basco. Basco has more than 20 players with D1 offers that Davison would be competing against.

Which performance is more impressive? I have no clue - not going back to watch Mater Dei game. But I can tell you that Cali playoff game probably looked a heck of a lot closer to a college football level of competition. College staffs are comparing kids coming from such extremely different backgrounds so no way they can suddenly toss Hill generational money based upon 1 game vs Lena

You are talking about what's reasonable. These boosters and deep pocket collectives don't always operate like that. Just look what Ellison and Portnoy just did.

Schools aren't the only one doing the evaluation to hand out the money now.
