STL Post Trimming HS Sport Staff

That's really sad to see, but kind of a sign of the times. Makes me appreciate this site to keep me informed on High School football in Illinois. Once again Tim, thanks for all you do promoting and helping the players

I wonder what this means for the football stat information that was accumulated on their website during the season. It was helpful for scouting as a fan upcoming playoff games against teams in the metro east. I know that MaxPreps is a source but not all teams download information for rosters or stats.

Paul Halfacre who covered Illinois High School sports also was cut loose. I think that leaves the P-D with just two -- really just one and a half -- full-timers covering sports on the Illinois side.

This is just the way things in the media are going. I still think the Pantagraph (Bloomington) and News-Gazette (Champaign) are the only two papers (that I am aware of) that still make an honest attempt at HS sports coverage. The News-Gazette has almost daily special writeups on athletes in the area, top games, rankings, etc. Their posting of pictures and the likes, favorite athletes, memories, etc., of the non-star athletes is great and I think more papers should do this. They really take the time to highlight the athletes. Hopefully, they will continue to do this. I have heard that Shaw Media also does a great job covering the northern part of the state. There are some papers that only publish a few days a week and you get Friday's basketball results on Monday and even Wednesday. For football, it's often Monday until any stories are published, and by then, most people have moved on from the game and no longer care about the story.

I get that times are changing but you have to adjust and adapt to the times. You can't just run scores, rankings, a special story every once in a while. You need to have multiple people out posting updates, videos, etc., on social media not waiting in the office for results. But the challenge is how do you raise enough revenue to pay these individuals? That is an answer I do not know.

But sites like Edgy are hugely beneficial for us football fans because we all know the REAL information is here and although the sports writers have done a great job, we all know the real experts reside within the real of the "Edgy Lost His Mind" message board.

I got an e-mail from the Chicago Tribune stating that a daily surcharge will be now applied to my existing subscription that will gradually chop off days from the ending date to make readers absorb their increased costs. What the hell is that?

Maybe some of these very successful high school sports writers can look to collaborate with you @EdgyTim and try to keep this thing rolling for the St. Louis Metro area. A lot of talent just needing a platform.

Just looked at the front page of the Post-Dispatch high school page on their web site to see if they had anything on Matt Martin's resignation at Edwardsville.
It did not.
I also counted the 13 stories which have been posted since the recent purge of sports writers, 10 of the 13 are on Missouri sports.
Is that what the future holds?

Lots a great prep guys out of work all over the state. All these stories, which were once a priority, will keep getting missed due to lack space in the paper, budget cuts to preps and people to cover the events. That of course includes football, but other sports as well.

You all are so lucky to have a forum like Edgy Tim to talk about high school football.

All.... And what used to be an ocean is now a lake. The Peoria Journal Star has for many years a sports forum one could comment on. Back in the day it was huge with posters talking about a myriad of sport related seasonal subjects year round. As with many sport forums participation is down. (other then Edgy's) But still a healthy amount of yackers. As of March 31 the newspaper is eliminating it.

Some of the locals especially the Bradley basketball following are trying to figure out a way to save and take it over. Ratsy
