SFHS 35 Rochelle 16 FINAL

Cannot get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before halftime on the 3 yard line…should be 20-8 or 18-8 going into half.

Good news is that SF gets the ball coming out of the second half. Need to punch it in to get some breathing room.

the unsportsmanlike penalty was because the player on SF said "F**k yeah" while high fiving his teammate... That officiating crew was atrocious. should have been 20-8 going into half... another long TD called back right out of halftime due to phantom holding on a WR 20 yards from the play... Score of this game is very deceiving... Besides the 1st drive of the game, Rochelle really didn't do much of anything... It was essentially a 3 qtr. game for Francis because that first drive took nearly 11 mins off the clock... and Rochelle's last TD came with 4 mins left in the game with all SF's backups in the game.. But a W is a W... Need to play almost perfect against a very good Provi team who is rollin right now.

Providence is gonna need to play a clean game to beat a really good SF team.

Wow that is bad by the ref...was just watching on NFHS so couldn't tell what sparked it.

Side note: It looks like Willis dressed and was out there a bit for the first time since he got injured against BMac? Having him back close to full-go next week would really help SF's cause....always good to have an All-conference WR available. Not alot of activity it looked like from him today, but really just getting out there and running clean routes is all you can hope for in the first game back after 6 weeks off.

Correct, he is back and ready to roll. seems like he was being eased back into it after having surgery and not taking any hits for 6 weeks. But Just having him on the field impacted the game and how the defense lined up. He is a top 3, arguably top Soph WR in the state But he is cleared and ready to roll. Which is a huge part of that offense that has been missing for the past 6 weeks.. Excited to see him back in full action this upcoming week. He is fun to watch.

Isn’t that kind of celebrarion, by definition, unsportsmanlike? I mean, sure you can ask the ref to pretend he didn’t hear it, but it applies the rule quite literally.

and it sounds like penalties and discipline have been a recurring issue for this team so I imagine the coaches have been harping on keep your mouth shut, don’t talk back to the other team, your celebration should be quick and quiet, no shoving matches after the whistle, etc. assuming that the coaches are doing their part trying to get the kids in line, then the only person to be upset with here is a high schooler with poor choice in language and not the official. If your story is true, then in film session I am confident the SFHS will hold the kid accountable and not be mad at the official. If they excuse the kid and blame the official, then that would explain much of the discipline issue this team has reportedly experienced.

I agree should've probably not said anything, but its playoff football and the kid made a huge play and was excited and talking to his teammate. He handed the ball to the ref and literally just high fived his teammate and said what he aid. It was not taunting. If saying " lets fckn go" is taunting then hell, there'd be thousands of flags thrown every week... But he was held accountable and ended up making some huge plays down the stretch. During the playoffs the flag issue has been much better.

"... ended up making some huge plays down the stretch." That is the best way to make amends to your coaches and teammates for a mistake.

I hope they have cleaned it up. I know you’re supposed to root for the team that ousts you, but Hilltoppers generally root against the Celtics. So it sounds like the Spartans may match up with PC but will need to be clean and essentially penalty free to let the best team win it on the field.

my only concern if they have cleaned it up would be that it’s probably easier to look disciplined and avoid costly mistakes when the game hasn’t been much in doubt and the competition not really up to par the last three weeks. I would imagine that if those demons are still there, close games against providence and then SHG/Rochester would bring them back out in full force.

hoping for SF to play a penalty free game. Looking forward to watching the 4A final four.

Letter of the law vs. spirit of the law.

The intention of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties is to prevent taunting of the opponent, and therefore keep tempers cool.

Proclaiming excitement at a big play with your own teammates (even if using an expletive), should never be flagged. There wasn’t a Rochelle player near them. A referee should be intelligent enough to be able to exercise an ounce of discretion, and not just “hear bad word - throw flag”.

Also to your comment about accountability: You can tell the player “hey you screwed up need to be smarter there…wind sprints on Monday” - holding them accountable. While also saying “the ref shouldn’t have thrown the flag, players should be allowed to celebrate with their own teammates and proclaim excitement in a way that isn’t taunting their opponents.” Those two concepts can coexist simultaneously.

In IC vs. SF, the IC defensive end got a big sack, got up and yelled out “let’s f****** go” with his teammates…and no one on SF called for a flag, because they shouldn’t have. That talk happens every single game on both sides.
