About Greg Newsome: Newsome was an all conference, all area and also an EDGYTIM All State performer in 2016. Newsome, who also plays basketball at GBN will be a three year varsity starter for the Panthers in 2017. Newsome also plays for Boom Midwest 7on7 and is also a very solid student in the class room.
EDGY's Take: Greg Newsome has been a major play-maker and impact performer for the Panthers over the past few seasons. Newsome has a lot to offer from a defensive back standpoint. Newsome has terrific size and length for a defensive back along with the ability to play as either corner or safety. Newsome has terrific speed and quickness along with the all important "quick twitch". Newsome is just a very fluid runner, has exceptional ball skills and closes very well. Newsome's length and reach is again exceptional for a defensive back. Newsome's overall physical tools are at a very high level. Newsome also is strong in run support, has a great nose for the football and also closes well and is a sure tackler. Newsome also loves the game and is the type of kid who would play 8 quarters in a game if allowed. Newsome also has swagger, plays hard nosed and very physical and is also more than willing to take a risk now and again to make a big play.
Could improve upon: Newsome likes to press, take a gamble and really get into a receiver and is highly aggressive at times. Sometimes that is a good thing and can also be a bad thing. Newsome, like most defensive backs can work on tracking the football better along with continued work on secondary skills. Yet overall? Newsome is a highly advanced defender and easily one of if not the best defensive back in the Class of 2018.
EDGY's Early Evaluation: I'm not really surprised at Newsome's offer so far and I fully expect more Power 5 offers to come in. Newsome has a ton to offer here. His overall game. skill level, physical tools and sheer determination and work ethic and passion is exceptional. My early rank on Greg Newsome is a mid 4 star to start and I also see Newsome as a Top 10 Top ranked recruit in the Class of 2018. Newsome is a headliner in a stronger than usual defensive backs group in the 2018 class. His overall physical tools really have Power 5 schools excited and expect many more offers to come.
