The Trib did a piece on EJ Liddell and how he compares to all-time metro STL players, particularly Darius Miles, drafted third out of high school and LaPhonso Ellis, who played at ND then the NBA for 11 years.
For an expert on Ellis, Liddell handed the phone to his father. Eric Liddell went up against Ellis in grade school, junior high and high school at East St. Louis Assumption, which, like Lincoln, is now closed.
So is EJ Liddell in LaPhonso Ellis’ league?
“That’s a tough one,” said Eric Liddell, who was a standout offensive lineman at Illinois State. “LaPhonso was unstoppable; EJ’s on the borderline. By the time EJ gets done next year he might get up to that level, but it’s going to be tough.”
Just another example of an ESL guy not giving love to a Belleville boy.

In an overtime loss to St. Louis Chaminade on Jan. 21, Liddell scored 25 points (with 10 blocks) to N.C. State signee Jericole Hellems’ 19. On Feb. 3, Liddell outdueled Courtney Ramey 33-24 in a win over St. Louis Webster Groves.
