CS8 Predictions-Week 9

Six Friday night contests to end the regular season. Weather should not be an issue this week. High Friday in the mid to high 60's and no rain forecast.

Eisenhower (1-7) at Southeast (1-7)
Both teams have their sole wins against Lanphier. Eisenhower won 46-24 in Week 4, while Southeast's margin was 48-8 last week. The Spartans appear to have found a pretty good Junior QB late in the season. He gives them some hope for next year. The Generals are playing many underclassmen and hope they stay in the program and keep developing. Southeast 35 Eisenhower 16

Lanphier (0-8) at Springfield (2-6)
Not really a road game for the Lions, since both teams have Memorial Stadium as their home field. Lanphier has struggled all season, especially defensively, and dressed fewer than 30 against Rochester in Week 6. The Senators will have QB Brody Scheffler for two more years. Springfield 51 Lanphier 8

Lincoln (5-3) at Chatham (5-3)
Lincoln led 14-0 on the road last week against U High but faltered and lost 41-28. Chatham beat U High 35-0 in Week 7. Both teams would like a 6th win to avoid playing a 9-0 or possibly an 8-1 team in the 1st round of the playoffs. Titan Sophomore QB Colton Knoedler has improved from the beginning of the season and was very sharp for a half last week against Rochester. Chatham should win comfortably. Chatham 45 Lincoln 14

Jacksonville (4-4) at U High (6-2)
Jacksonville needs to win to make the playoffs. They would likely be in 5A. U High would love to get a 7th win, which should get them a 4A home playoff game. Both teams own wins over Decatur MacArthur. U High beat Lincoln, while Jacksonville lost to the Railers. If the Crimsons win, it will likely be due to the running of Cam Ron Mitchell and Mani Moore. The Crimsons clinched their playoff berth in 2021 in Week 9 but that was a home game against Mac. U High is the slight favorite playing at home. U High 34 Jacksonville 28

MacArthur (5-3) at Bloomington (5-3)
The final CS8 vs Big 12 contest. The Big 12 leads 6-4 so far. MacArthur is the CS8 team I've missed the most on this season, being only 4-4. I picked them to beat Jacksonville and U High and had them losing to Chatham and SHG. I've always thought that Mac is a much stronger team when they play at home. Their wins this year against Chatham and SHG were both home games. Bloomington looks to be in 6A in the playoffs, while Mac will be 5A. Bloomington has lost to 5A Peoria, 7A Normal, and 6A Normal West. None of their losses were particularly close. They have beaten playoff qualifiers Peoria Notre Dame (4A) and Champaign Centennial (6A). Can Mac win for the fifth straight week after their big victory over SHG? I'm taking the Purple Raiders, barely. Bloomington 31 MacArthur 30

Rochester (8-0) at SHG (6-2)
The Rockets have never won at Ken Leonard Stadium, going 0 and 7 dating back to 2012. Last year, Rochester led 28-0 in the 2nd Quarter of the 4A semi-finals before being outscored 56-14 the remainder of the game by the Cyclones. There is a role reversal of the two teams from last season. SHG returned only 3 starters from their championship team and have had to deal with injuries to multiple key players. Rochester has the more experienced team and got WR-QB Parker Gillespie back last week after missing the first seven weeks with an injury. The Rockets led Chatham only 21-14 late in the 2nd Quarter last week before erupting to score the next 42 points. The defense, which had not been particularly impressive, came to life in the second half and forced three quick turnovers. This led to several short field TD's for the offense. Rochester would love to have a fast start and then be able to turn up the defensive pressure. Expect SHG to have reviewed Chatham's success in moving the ball in the 1st half last week. The Rockets should get their initial win at KL Stadium, but I'm expecting this to be hard fought. Rochester 41 SHG 23

North Suburban Conference Playoff Preview

Warren (8A)
I see the Blue Devils beating Oswego and either Lane/South Elgin advancing the the Quarterfinals before losing to Lincoln-way East.

Stevenson (8A)
The Patriots have a tough first round draw but it looks like the young Patriots have been improving every week. I see them beating Lyons and losing to York.

Lake Zurich (6A)
The Bears are not flashy but they get by with a solid defense and a controlled ground and pound offense. I see the Bears in Normal losing to East St Louis in the Finals. However, I could also see them losing in Round 2 to Kaneland.

Lake Forest (6A)
The Scouts have a nice draw in round 1 v Lake View which I see them winning. However I see them losing in round 2 v Geneva.

Libertyville (6A)
In one of the major upsets in the 1st round I see the Wildcats defeating Cary-Grove. I have head C-G is down and I am a big fan of Libertyville QB and their sophomore WR LaVista. I then see Libertyville defeating the HP/Mather winner before losing to Geneva in the Quarterfinals.

Roxanne-A Putting on the Red Light

If the red light means scoring, which they have been doing in bunches. The program was nurtured by Charlie Raich and I remember the Althoff v Roxana 4A playoff games in the 1980s. Tough blue-collar kids and as Coach Schott would comment, "They are pissed off all of the time because their town smells so badly."

The program is surging again - 4-and was ranked 10 in 3A last week before whipping Columbia 37-0 on Friday. they return 12 starters from last year's playoff team that made it to round two.

They are scoring in bunches and have given up 13 points on the year. Should be a tough out in 3A.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

All.... May the tricks be few for the teams this weekend. Skelly my 12 ft skeleton awaits the kids tomorrow evening . (took me three years to get it) What is that in his left hand a 16oz beer can. Oh my. Ratsy

The World Famous CCL-ESCC Predictions 2023 Week 10

Playoff time! Normally I'd say it's time to end our internecine blood feuds and direct our aggression to the outside world, but the Mustangs had to play nice and get the Crusaders get into the playoffs.
At time of posting, the Prep Bowl playoff games aren't known. Fret not, they will be added when scheduled.
Best of luck to all teams.

what's the quickest score you've ever seen in a game?

Sterling scored a safety 6 seconds into their game vs Payton yesterday. The Payton return man bobbled the kickoff near the goal line, recovered and retreated into the end zone where he was tackled. Anyone ever see something like that before?

(and there was/is some debate on whether it should have been a touchback, but the officials called it a safety)

LA 23 MC 21 FINAL

Great game to watch. I apologize to my neighbors if they heard me yelling because the announcers are incompetent and don't know how to count thinking LA had to run another play and then thinking they were going to get a penalty for the team coming on the field with time still left on the clock even though no one could stop the clock and LA wasn't going to run another play.

WB6 playoff week 1 round up and week 2 look a head

WB6 playoff week 1 wrap up:

Quincy 44 – West Chicago 14: Pretty awesome season for West Chicago to make the playoffs, but Quincy was head, shoulders, and torso above them. Quincy’s offense continues to roll.

Sterling 50 – Chicago Payton 0: Sterling was off and running from the opening kick off til halftime, building a 43-0 halftime lead. A lot of young kids got about a half of football for Sterling.

IC Catholic 35 – Geneseo 12: Geneseo played hard, but IC Catholic is a buzz saw. The Leafs need to figure out a few more ways to move the ball on offense going forward.

WB6 playoff week 2 look ahead:

Quincy over Wheaton North: Quincy gets the long bus ride and a much sterner test this week against a very solid Wheaton North team. Quincy does not normally face a team that can sling it like they can so not only should this game be interesting…it could be a track meet. I think Quincy’s RB Jeraius Rice is the kicker here for the Blue Devils. He has a 100+ yard game a few scores, Quincy takes it. He gets bottled up though? Things get dicey.

St. Francis over Sterling: These two played week 2 in the tune of a 42-28 St. Francis victory. Both teams have improved since then, but SF’s QB Alessio Milivojevic is the real deal and he has weapons around him. Sterling has to find a way to get pressure on him, or he will pick them apart. If Sterling can find a way to move the ball and chew some clock, they can give themselves a chance in this one. St. Francis’ defense has been prone to giving up yards and points, but the Spartans have enough firepower to advance to the quarters.

I'll post the TRAC one later on.

WSC Wk 1 Playoff Pick'em

The West Suburban conference has 7 teams playing a 10th game this weekend, 4 in the 8A playoffs, and 3 in the 7A playoffs. The WSS representatives in 8A got a tough draw, as LT, York and GBW are all in the same sub-bracket. It guarentees we will not see two semi-finalists again.

I'd love to give a full breakdown of each game, but I honestly don't know enough about all the opponents to them justice. Here is the insight I can give -

1. Addison Trail - I know I tracked their run to 6 wins all season, but I always knew who they were. They qualify for the playoffs with 6 wins, and the lowest number of playoff points of any playoff qualifier in the state. Their 3 losses were to the only team s on their schedule with winning records.

2. Downers Grove South - All their losses are to playoff teams - Wheaton North, DGN, and York - and none of those games were particularly close. Their sole win over another playoff team was against Willowbrook in week 4, winning by 7.

3. Willowbrook - The only playoff teams Willowbrook faced this season were AT and DGS. They clocked AT 42-0 and lost to DGS by 7. They narrowly beat Hinsdale South by 3 in week 5. They also narrowly lost to Niles Notre Dame (2-7) by 3 in week 1.

4. Downers Grove North - DGS went 3-2 against playoff teams in the regular season. We can all admit, even with some teams in down years, the Silver side of the West Suburban Conference is not a cake walk.

5. York - Two of the 4-5 teams to make the playoffs (Glenbrook South and Nazareth) lost to York in weeks 1 and 2. That gives York a 5-1 record against playoff teams in the regular season. The one loss to Glenbard West snapped a streak of WSC wins dating back to the 2021 season.

6. Glenbard West - 2-2 against playoff teams, but one of those losses was to De Smet Jesuit out of Missouri, who finished the season 7-1. The other loss to DGN seemed to be a turning point in their season, as the Hilltoppers are on a 6 game winning streak heading into the playoffs. Included in that streak is the win over York in week 7.

7. Lyons Township - LT faced 5 playoff teams this season, going 2-3 against them. The 2 wins were against Wheaton Warrenville South in week 2, and DGN in week 7. Their losses to Glenbard West by 3 points, and to York by 10 (watching the game, it was closer than the score) indicate LT may not be an easy out.

Here are the games to pick. Good Luck!
Playoff Round 1
7A - Addison Trail (6-3) @ Lincoln Park (8-1) @ Lane Stadium
8A - Downers Grove South (6-3) @ Naperville Central (7-2)
7A - Willowbrook (7-2) vs. Yorkville (6-3)
7A - Downers Grove North (7-2) vs. Kenwood (6-3)
8A - York (8-1) vs. Homewood-Flossmoor (5-4)
8A - Glenbard West (7-2) vs. (Naperville North) (6-3)
8A - Lyons Township (6-3) @ Stevenson (7-2)
