8th Grade All Americans now a thing

Jaylon McKenzie, the Eighth-Grade All-American from Belleville, caught five passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns as he helped lead the East team to a 48-14 victory over the West at the NFL Hall of Fame All-Star Game. McKenzie, a 5-foot-7, 143-pound student at Central Jr. High, also was credited with two tackles as a cornerback. (Hickey and Adoree Jackson both went to Central too.)

“No, the college coaches haven’t talked to us,’’ Otis Gunner said with a smile. “We’re just concentrating on him being in the eighth grade and having fun being a kid.’’

But where will Jaylon go to high school?

“We haven’t decided yet,’’ Sukeena Gunner said. “We’ll sit down and talk about it. Academcs (sic) come first and Jaylon will go to the school we feel will be the best fit for him both academically and athletically."

(I HOPE THAT MEANS ALTHOFF!)

High School Football Royalty and some other schools

This weekend's games feature some of the historically best programs in the state. All 16 schools playing in Champaign have appeared in the state championship at least one previous time and the schools have combined to win a total of 66 state championships. 1A Camp Point is the only program without a championship on its resume. Mt Carmel has the most with 13, followed by Providence with 10 and East St Louis with 9. Pretty impressive group of schools. Please excuse any errors

Something stupid you’ve done this weekend (football)

Hopefully this is enough HS football related for Edgy to let it fly.

What is something funny, stupid (and football related) that you have done, so far, this championship weekend?

With everybody’s emotions running high this weekend, I just thought it would be good for us to laugh at ourselves.

I have at least 3 but I’ll just share my favorite one, for now.

1) I was at least 2-3 plays in to watching the 1A championship game before I realized that the QB’s last name was NOT “Le-Win”, Doh! Like it said on the back of his jersey.

East Side vs Prairie Ridge

All week long. It was East Side has no discipline. They can't stop the option. Well not only did they show discipline. They killed that option. It was personal for them. Especially after losing by one point in last year's title game. Someone said it was classless for them to keep scoring. The kicker/backup qb scored, and the linebacker scored on a long run. I think it was crazy for Prairie Ridge to keep Vasey in the game. It was obvious he had a concussion. But anywho. See y'all next year
