HOT CPL Thursday Action Week 2

Week 2 and we have a whole slate of 4 o'clock Thursday kickoffs! Nothing says football like knocking off work a bit early and hitting up a CPL stadium for the first action of the week. On to the picks!

Back of the Yards vs. Noble Golder
Full disclosure, I love typing BOTY. Makes me feel like I'm really getting away with something. If BOTY was playing Noble Johnson, I'm not sure I would be able to type up my pick without giggling like a 7 year old schoolgirl. Unfortunately, the Noble Johnson is not in action until nighttime, and we get Golder traveling to see BOTY at 4 in the sunshine. Nothing likes sun more than BOTY!
Forget the tan lines....BOTY!

Von Steuben vs. Mather
This one seems like it should be an old school CPL Big Shoulders Conference game. I don't have the records in front of me, so I'm pretty sure that Von started football after the Big Shoulders was dissolved in conference reorganization. Either way, I'm going to pretend it is 2012 and this game is at Hansen stadium. One or both teams need to take the CTA to the game, with at least two starters on a bus that is way behind schedule. Referees are late, and both coaches agree that when the referees get to the game, there should be a running clock since they need to hit the barstool for the Thursday night NCAA football games. Ahhh.hhhhh....sweet memories.
IT DOESN'T MATHER THAT VON GETS TO TAKE AN ACTUAL BUS!!!

North Lawndale vs. Rauner
There was a time in the not too distant past where North Lawndale was a contender for the CPL championship. That is a long time ago...
Rauner!

Chicago Academy vs. Collins
A few years ago during the spring Covid season, Chicago Academy was a pretty big deal in their conference dominating everyone. Then they ran up against Taft's JV who was playing a varsity schedule in that conference. That was a great day for the thousands of players that never really were quite good enough to make the varsity lineup in a meaningful way. A real win for the kids that need football more than football needs them.
COLLINS!

ICE week 2

WILMINGTON is on a whole other level this year. Hopefully, CC, Peotone and maybe Manteno can give them a game when it's time? Doubtful.
I would agree. I believe Manteno is the best one that can. Their passing game might give them a puncher's chance. I think Wilmo is poised for 14-0 if they go 2A. Too many good classes stacked on each other and they play a variety of school sizes which tests them.

ICE week 2

Wilmo wins a game that's nowhere near as close as it seems because of both teams running game and wilmo runs the clock down. I would love to see them to just once go no huddle on a team.

CC rebounds like last year when they ripped off a few straight after a morris loss.
Manteno keeps the points up and wins.
Peotone grounds out a close one over Marengo.
I'll take Streator in a close one. I have no clue on either team.

Unfortunately RC, Lisle, and Herscher are probably in for a thumping.

CS8 Predictions-Week 2

Not bad for my first week prognosticating 9-2, almost hit Quincy/QND on the head, missing it by a total of 2 points.

Richmond-Burton @ QND

R-B opens up with the same two teams from last year looking to duplicate their 2-0 start. You can look at the cup has half full or half empty for QND depending on which half of the game you want to focus on. R-B won by 19 last year. I say they get by with a one possession win this year.

R-B - 28 QND - 21

Mascoutah @ SHG

Last year broke a 4 season streak of playoff qualifying for Mascoutah and I think they’ll have a hill to climb again as I don’t see them getting out of Springfield with a win. SHG will be looking to make a statement. They are young and I don’t know if you can expect them to go from “0 to 60” but the offense will find some rhythm and the game should seem (and be) a lot slower this week.

Mascoutah – 21 SHG – 38

East Peoria @ Lanphier

I’d take Southeast over Lanphier – and East Peoria just got a 2 point win over the Spartans…so Give me East Peoria by a good number.

EP – 34 Lanphier – 14

Chatham @ North County

The only thing I know about North County is what Rocket said in his post. I’m betting in the blind on this one, other than I know Knoedler looked good last week when he threw it and I have to imagine the Titans open up the offense a bit more moving forward.

Chatham – 42 North County – 7

Normal U High @ Bloomington

My CS8 homerism wants me to ride with Normal, and I mean they are coming off putting up 64 and 2 of the TDs they allowed were in the 4th quarter where I imagine backups were in. Admittedly though, in the back of my head is the 44 point shutout that Coal City put on them in the playoffs. Their combined score last year against the three upper half of the CS8 teams they played was 98 points allowed, 31 points scored. However…as Rocket pointed out, Bloomington fared even worse 2 of those teams.

Normal – 38 Bloomington – 31

Cardinal Ritter @ Rochester

Not the first time the Rockets have been told they are facing a team vastly superior in talent, it just usually happens in November. I think the Rocket offense can produce as Coach Leonard has had a lot of time to prep here. In the end I’m not sure the Rocket defense can come up with enough stops.

Ritter – 42 Rochester – 28

Eisenhower @ Jacksonville

Believe Ike had their best shot at a win for a while last week. Jacksonville needs to find more offense and this will be a good week for it.

Eisenhower – 6 Jacksonville – 35

Springfield @ MacArthur

I’m not surprised Mac won, but was surprised by their margin of victory. Same could be said for Springfield. Both of these teams won against 2-7 opponents from a year ago so this week will be a lot more telling for the strength of the programs for this season.

SHS 24 Mac 35

Lincoln @ Southeast

Lincoln once again needs to stack wins early to give themselves a shot at 5 wins for the playoffs. They need to win against Southeast who put up a good showing in a loss to East Peoria because after this the road gets tougher with matchups against Rochester, Normal, MacArthur, and Glenwood with Eisenhower sandwiched in the middle. That’s 3-4 going into the final two weeks of the season needing wins against QND and Jacksonville. Lincoln leans on the running game to salt away a 2 score victory.

Lincoln – 28 Southeast – 14
The way Pittsfield played Jax tough leaves me wondering about their "toughness." Ike is still building but I see a very tough game for Jax this week. If they lose this game the playoffs are out of reach with SHG, SHS, Mac, and Lincoln still on the schedule. If I know Mark like I do this week is the super bowl of weeks in practice!

MMXXIV Edition - CCL-ESCC Predictions Week II

Find myself a week in the hole after neglecting to get my picks in last week. Comeback starts now.

Brother Rice +5 vs Marist. BR demolished a usually solid CPS squad. Marist had a closer game vs another usually solid CPS squad. And it is at BR. Crusaders win this one by a FG.

MC -21 vs Rita. Caravan at 0-1 means a pissed off Caravan team. Think they win this one by 4+ TDs at home.

Fenwick +22 vs Iggy. Ignatius has a very narrow window to make the playoffs. Life in the Blue. This is a must-win for them and they will get the job done, but it will be close.

GW +27 vs Loyola. Ramblers win by 2-3 TDs. Can't see them covering such a big spread on a Saturday afternoon in Glen Ellyn.

IC -62 vs Bronzeville. Why?

Kenwood +39 vs Naz. The Broncos put up a nice fight vs WSF last week. Can't see the Roadrunners covering such a big spread.

"Lift for Life" +39 vs WSF. I imagine this opponent will be one of the strongest schools you can face. They quite literally life weights to survive, per their name.

Oswego +17 vs JCA. Oswego looked good last week vs Nequa. Think they keep this one close at home!

Providence -3 vs LWC. Love the Celtics challenging themselves in non-conf. Tough loss vs Wheaton North last week. They need this one though. I think they get it done by a TD.

ND -1 vs Sterling. Wonder how this match was made. Really disappointed I am unable to make it out to legendary Sterling High School for a Friday night game. I think the score prediction is pretty close to spot-on here. Low-scoring, hard-hitting.

Viator -45 vs Hyde Park. Viator schedules non-con like their namesake in Wizard of Oz.

MCC +8 vs DePaul. Long trip on a Friday night for the Rams. And weird things happen out in the Sticks.

Pats -28 vs Larkin. Shamrocks are much improved from last year. And they have a fantastic kicker. Tough road to 5 wins for them, but they'll get #1 this weekend. Any Shamrock fans know why they are opening with four road games?

Moline +18 vs Benet. Spread too big.

Marmion -43 vs Noble. Yawn.

Foreman +62 vs DLS. Yawwwwwwn.

Leo +14 vs Amundsen. A CCL team being a 14 point dog vs a mediocre CPS squad. Interesting...

HF -18 vs Marian. I like the Spartans this year. I don't like the Spartans this week.

Evanston +17 vs Larry. Another interesting matchup. Think it's a 1-2 TD win for Larry on the road.

Montini -33 vs Hillcrest. No other thoughts.

CoM -34 vs Lake Forest. Corsairs are a state title contender this year. They get it done in their home opener.

Massey Ranking Accuracy- Week 1

That is a lot of data entry or was this an upload of a batch?
Steve Soucie was kind enough to provide me access to his spreadsheet where he tracks schedules and scores. The Massey Ratings I brought into a spreadsheet in bulk, although its formatting doesn't come over great, so some work (formulas) to clean that up. Biggest headache is probably matching up how the schools' names are presented in different places, e.g. is it Mt. Carmel or Mount Carmel, or Chicago (Mt. Carmel), etc.

All that is leading to the dashboard I've published (view on large screen in full screen mode).

Miles McVay Keeps Working

The Big Man from East Side is a Redshirt Freshman, slotted at LT behind another from his class who was the top ranked lineman. Also, another RS/Frosh tackle is getting PT before him. He was next up, but an injury this weekend proved otherwise when the 2nd RT (RS Soph) moved to LT when Proctor got hurt.

In this day and age of the portal, I am guilty of thinking about his next home, but he still has plenty of time to earn his Sunday stripes. In fact, the young man is a cheerleader for the team's recruiting of other linemen.

Not only that, he is getting himself a good education, earning Honor Roll status. I sure hope he stays all five years and gets a grad degree before getting Day 1 drafted. He is a student athlete I can really root for!

Paris Patterson transferred from Arkansas to SMU - he too has not taken a snap this year.

Crazy how I thought both could get into the rotation right away. They are playing with the Bog Boys now!

MMXXIV Edition - CCL-ESCC Predictions Week II

At first, I thought it must've been something in one of the IPAs I was served last week.. But I woke up Sunday only to hear our two nationally-ranked members are winless, only one of our three Irish teams managed a win and our city guys got whooped by pumpkin farmers and a futbol school. Is it too late to get Bogan or Mather on the schedule? All hope is with the Corsairs now.

LWC vs Provi

I believe this is the 1st time these New Lenox schools are playing each other. Don’t know too much about either but curious what people thought of the matchup.
Lincoln Way played Providence Catholic in some games many years ago. 1980 Lincoln Way 38 Providence Catholic 0. The Knights missed the playoffs at 6-3 & the Celtics finished 4-5. 1981 Lincoln Way won 25-0. The Knights missed the playoffs at 8-1 & Providence Catholic got in 3A playoffs losing round 1 to Bishop Mac 38-20 & finished 6-4

ICE week 2

Reed-Custer @ Harvard
Hornets already throttled Lisle. I’ll take them but R-C keeps it a little closer.

Coalers @ Canton
Hopefully the CC QB is healthy. I’ll take the Coalers either way.

Herscher @ BMac
Big rivals here. I like Mac in a one score game.

Lisle @ Seneca
Irish aren’t as good as last year, but good enough to get the W here.

Manteno @ Plano
Nice win for the Panthers week 1, but Plano is a tougher opponent and @ their place. I’ll take the Reapers.

‘Tone @ Marengo
Seems like a toss up. Coin flip says Marengo, unfortunately.

Streator v Ottawa
The only conference team with a home game this week. I’ll take Ottawa in this long time rivalry (over 100 years) game.

Wilmo @ Sandwich
Sandwich O looked good last week, but they gave up a bunch to Manteno so I’d expect the Cats to move the ball and do their thing.

Looks like overall the league has some tough matchups and mostly on the road.

Massey Ranking Accuracy- Week 1

With that 75%, I assume the "spread" isn't taken into account. I wonder within that 75% how close Massey was with the spreads. Good stuff!
It's just straight up W/L & whether the favorite won or not. Not aware of an easy way to grab the projected point difference in bulk, but I'm crazy enough to try to figure it out 😂

Brother Rice v Marist on Marquee

Massey Ranking Accuracy- Week 1

Accidentally posted this 1st on paid board, apologies for duplicate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I only learned of the Massey ratings from this board & then added them to the dashboard I created with team schedules & stats from 2023. Know we need to take those rankings (in particular pre-season & early season) with grain of salt. Nevertheless, thought I would see how they held up. So, I took Massey pre-season rankings and compared to week 1 results. I assumed the higher ranked team would be favored, so ignoring home field etc. Here goes:

Overall: Out of the 228 in state games that I could match a pre-season ranking for both teams, Massey would predict 172/228 correctly- 75%

Top 10 upsets by ranking difference:

#104 Chicago (De La Salle) 0 <> #291 Summit (Argo) 45
#316 Chester 35 <> #167 DuQuoin (H.S.) 27
#362 Erie [E.-Prophetstown Coop] 13 <> #234 Kewanee (H.S.) 6
#191 Plainfield (South) 3 <> #75 Yorkville (H.S.) 0
#358 Elmwood [E.-Brimfield Coop] 41 <> #250 Knoxville 28
#374 North Chicago 32 <> #274 Wheeling 0
#186 Plainfield (Central) 14 <> #284 Waukegan (H.S.) 16
#277 Franklin Park-Northlake (Leyden) 30 <> #188 Highland Park 27
#285 Dakota 0 <> #373 Dwight [Dwight/Gardner-So. Wilmington Coop] 49
#302 Manteno 54 <> #218 Sandwich 32
